I use this trick all the time when performing the 1st mvt. of the Brandenburg. Even Herbert Von Karajan had no idea I was doing it. On a gig where I play lead I even use 12 different size ducks so I can scream any note in tune. It can be a handful. The trick is keeping all your ducks in a row.

+Steve Keville And do you know what that will do? it will ruin your muscles. If you are talking about using this for YEARS and YEARS to come, your muscles in your face (lips) will, well, you get the idea if you know what I mean. just like bench pressing. If you quit doing it, your muscles become flabby.

Hey Bruce great intiative concept.. Thanks for sharing. I found another concept which works on all three values with scales for increasing your range without trying.. The large tuning slide of the trumpet you can insert a smaller tube copper or brass from your local hardware store. You can put a protective layer of tape on the outer part of the tube, but not to much because it can be jammed in your trumpet. The air which enters the camber will go through the inner pipe and the tape will also prevent air going around the outer part of the pipe.. It basically makes your inner diameter dimension smaller and increase your ranger higher... Once again thanks for sharing your video with us.

I am what you would call a relatively inexperienced player who has been able to play high Fs on trombone since 9th grade (g for trumpets). I went from in 8th grade being able to play normal F above the staff to the octave above that in around 2 months with the easiest trick possible. You just gotta get reps. Preferably with good technique but just play your full range every day and try to expand it just a little, don’t stay in your comfort zone because then it will stay just your comfort zone. I have now monopolized the high brass, with the ability to go above high C on French horn on my first day, and now having high G on trumpet after a few months (turns out my mouthpiece had something majorly wrong with it that was setting me back so the day I got it changed I gained a fifth of range. Obviously I’m not experienced so take it with a grain of salt but this is kinda what the guy is talking about so I feel like I should at least say something to anyone who actually needs an answer.

People playing just high notes may do this but the ones playing songs in the upper register are actually able to do it. I trained for upper register by holding a sharpie in my lips to strengthen my embouchure and lots of crunches. Our high school band teacher also had us practice daily with a trumpet hanging off the ceiling and no hands. Just slurs. Senior year of school could just touch double E flat.

Sounding good! A bit disappointing for those of us trying to remind ourselves of the physical of the couple of brilliant videos on here with pointers to getting a high register going.

Oh my gosh Bruce, why didn't you figure this out and let us know sooner!!! Years and years of private lessons and decades of practice wasted!!! This is going to be great! Our two dogs always perform "Squeakectomies" on their toys almost immediately, so with one quick trip to PetSmart I'll be able to finally stop practicing! :-)

This was fun! I still have my trumpet from teen years. I took lessons, but was limited partly because after having meningitis, was very slow at sight reading. I still entertain myself at 80 years...not good enough to entertain others. God bless!! I have many personal videos on my channel... I hope you'll take a peek. Smile...
