What are double negatives in English? Are they considered correct grammar or incorrect? In this lesson, I will guide you through the ins and outs of double negatives, which is a common area of confusion for many English learners.
Double negatives occur when two negative words are used in the same sentence, often leading to a positive meaning. For example, "I don't need no help" should be "I don't need any help."

• Why double negatives can be confusing and how they can change the meaning of a sentence.
• The right way to convey a negative meaning without causing confusion.
• How to replace a negative with a positive replacement
• Stylistic usage of double negatives in music and literature
By understanding and avoiding the common errors related to double negatives, you can communicate more clearly and confidently in English. Stay tuned until the end for a quiz to test your understanding of today's lesson!

Gotta admit I'm fond of certain double negative colloquialisms I learned in the South: "It don't make me no never mind."

This lesson helped me greatly. I've often struggled identifying double negatives that my word processor flagged and now I know the reason. Number 5 and 8 were the most difficult. However, I did get the others correct. Thank you, Jennifer, for these lessons, which are so helpful!

8/8👍 This has been a subject, or should I say a pain in the neck, by being reminded of what is, and what isn't. Usually by strangers. But, all 'n' all, edification can only improve one-self. P.S. Those are some of my favorites too ;)

This is a great lesson teacher, not difficult to grasp, but handy. By the way in Spanish, it is also wrong to use a double negative in the same sentence. Similarly in English or Spanish, two negatives inside of one sentence means yes. Por ejemplo; Yo no puedo no entender, means I did understand. Which I believe, I did. Thanks to you!

Thanks, Jose! I have a question for you. I regularly hear Spanish speakers say phrases such as "no tengo ninguna idea." This would mean "I have absolutely no idea" even though it is a double negative. Am I correct? Hehe.

Yes, you are absolutely right, teacher. It is an expression often used but technically, as in English two negatives mean, yes. Thank you for asking me, you have made my day.@@SparkleEnglish ☺

Hey Sparkle! Could you make a video about figuative vs literal writing please? As an example, see Jane run; versus; Jane can go or fly. Im having trouble keeping my writing concice and literal. Maybe not, but if you could please I'd be greatful. How do I avoid analogies and figuratives whilst writing? Thanks.

Literal language means exactly what it says, while figurative language uses similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and personification to describe something. It should read, "See Amy run away, vs 😂 😁

Dear Sparkle English, I thought you said we were not to place a semi colon where there is a ‘but’. On page 403 of Jane Eyre Charlotte writes: ‘They we’re both more accomplished and better read than I was; but with eagerness I followed in the path of knowledge they had trodden before me. That’s terrible isn’t it 😢! What do you think? Kevin uk

Great question, Kevin! This is not a typical or standard usage of the semicolon. You will see many examples of this type of punctuation in older novels and written works where authors/writers take creative liberty. In this case, the semicolon is perhaps used to provide a stronger pause than a comma would, highlighting the contrast between the two clauses. However, I wouldn't make a habit of this in modern day English writing.
