La sub unidad existe desde 2008, la crearon porque Hyun Joong y Jung Min estaban saturados de trabajo, uno en BOF y otro en el musical Grease; hasta hicieron grabaciones/presentaciones fuera del país y no podían exigirles más porque no se daban a basto, a veces grabaciones duraban más de 24hr. La agencia DSP no quería detener las actividades y crearon SS301 para seguir promocionando y haciendo música, grabaron álbum, OSTs para BOF, y en cuanto GaeMal terminaron sus otros trabajos volvieron de nuevo a integrarse como SS501, cantando y bailando lo que que había grabado el trío mientras no podían estar con ellos de gira, e igual integrando el trabajo del trío dentro de las giras de SS501, Hyun Joong aún con look de Ji Hoo volvió a las actividades y giras con SS501. Como volvieron a estar los cinco ya no estuvo tan activa la sub unidad sino el total de SS501, luego la sub unidad hizo actividades, volvió a grabar y tuvo comeback el trío de nuevo después de muchos años, cuando hicieron comeback Hyun y Min estaban en sus servicios militares, ya habían pasado muchos años desde que prometieron volver los cinco, grabar y hacer eventos y giras; así que como recompensa a TripleS por la espera hizo comeback aunque fuera sólo la sub unidad (a la que ésta agencia nombró Double S 301 por los derechos de DSP sobre SS301 y SS501), porque por los servicios no podían estar con ellos el resto de SS501, la sub unidad duró poco más de dos años activa promocionando en éste comeback, ganaron premios, hicieron gira mundial, estuvieron hasta en Latinoamérica. Pararon actividades porque a Hyung Jun le tocaba hacer su servicio militar y no podía continuar posponiéndolo más. Todos ellos siguen haciendo sus promociones individuales, asistiendo a shows, a programas, étc., y siguen considerándose miembros de SS501, así se presentan ellos, y así los presentan los programas, como miembros de SS501, porque ellos nunca se separaron oficialmente, sólo entraron en etapa de hiatus (pausa) de actividad grupal. SS501 siguen siendo los 5, y la sub unidad el trío, eso no ha cambiado. TripleS también sigue ahí con cada uno de ellos; si ven las últimas promociones en vivo que han hecho, como "Love so sweet" de Jung Min al presentarlo y saludar dicen que es miembro de SS501, y él también al presentarse saluda y dice "Soy Para Jung Min de SS501", lo mismo cada promoción que ha tenido Kyu Jong, igual lo que grabaron Young Saeng y Kyu Jong hace unos meses para MMTG en su especial de Chuseok, les hicieron todo un especial con entrevistas, dos presentaciones, resúmenes sobre el fandom, el grupo y esa época, y como integrantes de SS501 los presentaron. Las presentaciones más recientes en music shows son las que ha hecho Young Saeng ahora que lanzó "Mi casa su casa", en todas igual lo presentaron como miembro del grupo, hace unas horas tuvo la última en music shows en vivo, fueron 7 presentaciones, y hoy tendrá promoción en MBC Radio, también en vivo. Grabó el detrás de cámaras para uno de sus canales, reacciones, hizo en vivos en IG y Vl..., así que también debe estar algo cansado por tantos ensayos y grabaciones, pero igual muy contento y agradecido con Y.E.S y TripleS, que ahí estuvimos de varios países desvelándonos, otras madrugando para verlo en vivo y animarlo aunque esté lejos.
