On this video I show how I use a double dividing board to make a split. I visit our St John Bee yard where I had placed 4 double dividing boards in hives that did not have swarm or superseding cells in them on my last visit. By placing a doubled screened board between the boxes, it forces the bee to draw out emergency cells in the box that the queen is not in thus making it possible for me to split the hive and averting the hive to swarm.
The one scenario I forgot to talk about when using a double screened board is what happens when you go back 7 to 10 days later to check for cells and there are none in the box that the queen is not in. In those instances I have a number of options:
1. I could remove the board and simply rejoin the hives.
2. I could add a frame of brood, one that has eggs 3 days or younger on it, I just guess and I have good luck with that.
3. I could take a frame from another hive with an emergency cell or two one it and put it in that box...that is after knocking all the bees on the frame back into the box they came from.
4. Buy a queen and add her to the hive.
And there probably there are several other solutions to the problem, but at least it is not a hopeless situation.
I'm really itching to do a removal, but with the coronavirus still having it's way with the world, I simply have to wait just like everyone else is doing. I hope all are practicing healthy choices, and I continue to pray for those who are suffering now and those who will suffer due to the effects this virus will cause to our economy.
And though these are difficult times, I still pray all will remember to live the joy of Easter and Christ's resurrection. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

Idea for next video: show close ups of each type of cells - supersede, swarm, eggs, queen, nectar, honey, drawn out emergency cells - because there seems to be so many - before I buy my first bee box I want to be able to tell the difference.

When you pull the top box you don’t have bees trying to get into the back of the box. The top bees just end up going to the bottom entrance without a lot of fuss.

Dear Brother Jeff, Thank you for your reply message , I am very interesting in beekeeper work . your youtube channel also I get more information. i am Christian preacher . i from Nepal . maybe it possible to visit Nepal after some time. You may already have a place in your heart for your bees, but this doesn’t automatically translate into desirable accommodation. Whatever your species, the same three golden rules for choosing your ideal home seem to apply-location, location, location-so where you plan to put your hive is crucial for both you and your bees. Whilst we humans may prioritize easily accessible supermarkets, farmers markets, or organic whole-food temples, all the bees require is nearby flowers that we haven’t made poisonous. Not an unreasonably high expectation to have of your neighbors, but one we disappoint all too frequently. And though even the wildflowers that grow in the margins of industrial agriculture are often tainted by the overspray of pesticides harmful to bees, all is not gloom: in towns and cities millions of gardeners deliberately plant for blossoms from March to November. From window boxes to public parks, we’ve intervened to generate the sight and smell of beautiful flowers that profoundly gladden our hearts.

Jeff I do something similar to you, but I have found over he years that if you specifically select only a couple frames with eggs and then use OTS method the queen cells developed are a much higher quality. Like I said I raise many of my queens using a double screen, and sometimes depending how many notches I make On natural comb I can harvest a dozen nice queen cells. Just a thought.

Kinda funny how the bees dislike the camera. Well, I guess if someone brought a camera on MY property and proceeded to tear up my house and talk about MY family and how they were gonna help themselves to MY pantry….I suppose I’d take a shotgun and invite them to leave! So we all have our own sting…. Thanks for another great video! This is the way I like to split my hives. I’m not much for the whole queen grafting and all…I know you can make money with it but it don’t seem natural. So there you are ‘in Folsom prison…and time keeps draggin’ on….and when you hear that whistle blowing……’

Hello MR ED, thank you Jeff very interesting and informative video, I’m really happy I have UTUBE so I can learn so much stuff from all of you experienced beekeepers, Jeff can you tell me please what breed of bee do you find easier and more productive to have I started with Italian type bees but I’m hearing from a pot of good beekeepers over here in the UK that they like to have the Buckfast bees plus if I may ask another question what do you think of the polystyrene hives I’ve never tried them and I don’t know any off my other beekeeping friends that have had them either ! Well thank you Jeff for sharing your expertise and posting your excellent videos for all of us , Stay safe and god bless my friend.

@JeffHorchoff 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, I will tell you my opinion on what a good breed of bees is, it's the ones that you pull out of someones house. With all the different species of bees to select from, really, how is a guy to know that's the one for me? For that reason, the single most important trait in a bee that I look for is survivability, can the bees withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at them without me doing anything with them. In other words, without treatments or feeding. Are Buckfast bees good, yes, heck I'd like a few of those. What about Russians, Italians, Cornies, and on and on, they are all good, but what's going to do the best for you is something you will have to work out for yourself. Personally, I don't mind doing the work taking bees from structures and tending them, I don't pay money for them and if they perish, I'll go get more. Eventually, I'll get the bees to stick and they will develop their own species due to the intermingling of the hives. I am now in the 4th year of working under that auspice, and can see already a certain degree of success as witnessed by the bees in this video. As far as poly hives go, I understand that they are pretty common in the UK and due to the weather conditions there, they maintain heat very well. Personally, I do not have experience with them however. I'm sorry I could not be more help for you, but with a lot of things in life, we have to take circumstances and make them fit our way of living. If you can do that, you will find contentment with your choices. Thank you for your blessing, and stay safe yourself. God's peace brother.. Mr. Ed

Brother Jeff, I wish you a blessed Passover, I'm a Christian that doesn't celebrate Easter.....but praise the Lord for the blessed Lamb of God, Jesus, whose shed blood is our Passover sacrifice. Great split video....did mine yesterday. First grafts made beautiful cells....I err on the side of caution, gave split deeps and nucs 2 cells each.....like you said, let the bees work that out. At least I know there's two opportunities for a good queen to emerge. I made my splits strong, nucs heavy with bees...probably could have made several thinner nucs...but these should build quickly when the new queens get established. As Jesus would say, Peace be unto you. He is risen and sits at the right hand of the Father, making intercession for us....Thank You Jesus!

Mr Ed, enjoy your videos and learning a lot. I've fabricated my double sheets boards from your design (watching your other video). One thing I noticed in this video is you'll set the hive entrances pointing to the exterior. I was also told the entrance should face in the south-southeast direction. What's your opinion on this? Thanks again for the videos and God bless.

That trick you do - certainly helps the foragers find their box. But it worries me - aren't you leaving them open to robbing? And what insect predators there are? Put it on your calendar - you can't forget to come back in a few days and close that up! Thanks for the video, i do love my Fridays!
@JeffHorchoff

You may think it would make it hard for the bees to defend against robbing, but they adjust to it, and I have never had robbing due to the fact that I shimmed the top box. However, putting it on the calendar is a very good idea, I've had boxes with shims in them when I came back 4 months later. I'm such a bad bee keeper. So glad to be part of your Fridays.
