Double-walled insulated glass mugs. Do they work? Here's a review and test

Are double-walled insulated glass mugs worth the expenditure? Do they keep your drinks hotter or colder than normal ceramic mugs? This video tests the claims of the manufacturers with a Mousette experiment. The results of the test can be seen at 23 minutes and 38 seconds if you want to jump right to the conclusions!

Thank you for doing this! Your method answered my curiosity well enough for home use! I will try pouring hot water into my ceramic mug first (to offset that initial 5° drop), and not bother with buying a glass mug. Thank you!!

Dr, you poured in the ceramic first, then you poured in the glass afterwards. However, you measured the glass first and then the ceramic, for baseline. So the water in the ceramic had to wait significantly longer before you measured its baseline, that could explain what appeared to be a sudden initial drop. Would've been a bit better if you measured the ceramic first since that's the one you poured first. Also, the thermometer seems to be touching the bottom of the cups, perhaps it would be more accurate if the thermometer is in the middle of the water, or at least some distance from the bottom/walls. But thank you for doing this experiment so we don't have to! I have another question that keeps me up at night, unrelated to the type of cup. Consider you pour hot coffee, and then you want to pour your cold liquid creamer or milk. Scenario 1: you pour the creamer at T=0. Scenario 2: you pour the creamer at T=5 minutes instead. So which scenario will provide you with hotter coffee with creamer at T=5 minutes?

Yes you come up with some valid points actually, and they would improve the accuracy of the results. I doubt they would change the outcome though. I will take them on board for my next experiment. Hmmmm .... that's an interesting thought about the creamer. I honestly can't hypothesise as to the answer. If I had to take a punt I would say it would be hotter when creamer is T=5. Have you done the experiment?

@@drmousette thanks for replying to me, I appreciate that. Yeah I agree I don't think these little things will make a difference to the main purpose of your experiment. I haven't tried the experiment about the coffee and creamer, but it's something I think about when I'm in training or a conference and need to get coffee and go back to the hall 🤣. If I ended making that experiment, I'll let you know!

This may be silly, but I microwave my creamer for 30 seconds before adding it to my coffee, to avoid lowering the temp right away. Good luck to you!
