its statistically much safer than driving anywhere. The way the tracks are built (except that one time in whistler) are so that no matter how you crash, you can't leave the track. you will stay in the icy chute, which means that when you crash you take a really really really really long time to stop, you aren't going from 100 to 0 in an instant, youre going from 100 to 0 in 30+ seconds. which means the force applied on your body, really isn't that much. Force = Mass * velocity / Time, the longer the time, the lesser the force. Of course there are broken bones, but no more proportionally than youd get from people playing any other sport. The thing is, crashing is COMMON like, every olympic athlete will have had hundreds of crashes in their career. You only hear about or see the really bad ones, creating a warped perception of the dangers of it going wrong, in 99% of crashes, you flip your sled, slide on your face for a while, stop, and get out, and your only injuries are some brusing and maybe ice burn. Then you go up and do it again. Source: am luger.
