I'm kinda pleased with my thought process on this one. After STARE and TOWER, I knew it was xxTER. There were a lot of possibilities and I didn't want to start to chase guesses. So I had to do some thinking. The second letter could be E, I, or U (or the word could be "enter"). I figured M and C were good consonants to evaluate, so I came up with MEDIC as my third guess. That would establish whether the second letter was an E, and by deduction whether it was an I or U. Finding the D was a bonus and gave me the answer DETER.

With only one E showing, I was curious if any other vowels would accompany. So, I tested them out and came to the conclusion, eventually, there were 2 E's. With such few options in the end, I start to get nervous, but Par 4 today, thankfully.... Stove, Lunar, Miter, Deter!

Lol! My last 3 words were exactly the same as yours: METER, PETER, then after struggling briefly, DETER. I think it's because we say the words in our head and since the accent in METER is on the first syllable, we say the other words with the accent on the 1st syllable and DE' ter doesn't ring a bell at first.
