I only saw Doug once. In CT therwas very little country music But, one night I went to see Old and in the Way , with Jerry Garcia. Doug was opening in in this old theater. The curtain opened and there, standing at attention was his band With the band we're these older, elegantly uniformed gentlemen. I realized that these were The Texas Playboys. Doug was dancing and singing like it was all of his birthdays and all of his Christmases, showed up in one day

A lot of folks haven’t heard of Doug Sahm. I live in the mid west and I remember him playing at our Bowling alley back in maybe 1967. He’s so enthusiastic, puts so much energy into his music, he’s an unforgettable performer and doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

My favorite Doug Sahm album was Honkey Blues, featuring out-there-avant-garde jazz and serious horns. I remember hearing Roky Erickson in Berkeley at a party for Rather Ripped records right after he released Two-Headed Dog. It was intergalactic. Years later, his bass player was my dentist in Albuquerque.

When you think back to those days, no mobiles, no internet, yet there were these maverick characters who seemed to know everybody, and the web of connections was just as complex as anything today. Listening to this, and the previous tale of Moonglow (the shadow farmer) reminds me of Richard Brautigan's books. Great content, Otis.

Love Doug Sahm I've been a fan forever. My only time seeing Doug play live was a free show at the teen center at the Minnesota state fair........The Sir Douglas Quintet I think 1966 or 67.....great show at the time unlike anything I'd heard before. I ended up in the early 80's collecting every LP with Doug I could get my hands on........my buddy and I would drive up to Minneapolis and hit various record shops including the Electric Fetus. Good times! When I sold off my mint LP collection in 2011 before our move to Playa del Carmen Mexico a bunch of my Doug Sahms LP's ended up in Greece......how cool is that!!!

A true genius. One of my favorite Americanafest moments was a tribute for Doug Sahm led by his son at the Country Music Hall of Fame. His son looks and sounds just like his dad and there was an allstar roster of musicians including one of my favorite guitarists-Charlie Sexton. It was great seeing the love pour out for this American icon

Sahm was a genius, truly one-of-a-kind, true american musical hero. I have had a close encounter with Sahm some years back and I carry it with me like having had some sort of religious experience (music being "my religion"). Everyone from Bob Dylan to...me(!) has benefited from there being a Doug Sahm in our orbit! If you could bottle and market the essence of Sahm it would be a priceless commodity!

I had a great chat with Doug while he was visiting Louie Ortega during one of Louie's solo gigs and was impressed by his direct honesty. We all had some fun down on Pismo Beach on the 4th of July another time.

In the mid 80s I used to go see Doug with various combos at the Hole in the Wall, a small bar with about 20 tables accross the drag from UT Austin. Everybody had an excellent time. It was amazing to me that this guy had had hits and was so down to earth and deeply talented. A natural entertainer throughand through.

This one is in the running for my favorite interviews Otis. Thanks to all. I moved to Austin first in June of 74 and around July or August an 18 year old me ambled into the Soap Creek Saloon on a steamy Saturday night. Packed house, stilleling heat, cold cheap beer bottles glistening against neon beer sign lights and listening to Doug with the Westside Horns. I'd seen a few club shows before and big major act concerts but never anything like the sonic onslaught that night. Speaking of horns-lets not forget Spot Barnett on Sax. He was the third leg on that stool. Doug got that big revue emsemble thing from R&B acts like Bobby Blue Bland Years later in the 90s I[m burning one with Doug outside The Hole in the Wall when he was doing his Mystic Knights of the Sea thing and I recall shaking his hand and thinking that hand shook Hank Williams hand. I could go on about Doug forever. His funeral sendoff was amazing as was the afterparty. So much talent. I'm sitting on a fender of a hearse and look over and Dr John is on the other fender. Still miss him and still introduce him to new and old friends

And he was smack-dab in the center of the British Invasion in 1964 with his faux English group complete with Beatle haircuts and suits: The Sir Douglass Quintet. "She's About A Mover" was on the AM radio charts along side the Beatles, Stones, The Animals, Them, Herman's Hermits, Freddie and the Dreamers, Petula Clark.... Doug Sahm has a huge resume!

I love your videos Otis, but the Doug Sahm stuff is pure gold to me. I am a fanatic! Found Doug and down the rabbit hole I went and stayed. My little boy and I get Big Red in a bottle at the bbq place in town and we listen to Sir Doug going and coming. Doug is up there with my top 5 baddest people on the planet in the 20th century that played and changed music. Dylan, Neil Young, Doug Sahm. The Holy Trinity of the greatest music made. All hail Sir Douglas. Listen to the Sir Douglas Quintet complete Smash/Mercury Years box set and Doug Sahm’s Atlantic albums and outtakes on the Genuine Texas Groover set. The mono singles 2xLP by the SDQ is essential too. Son Volt is putting out an album of all Doug covers called Day of the Doug (I think that’s the title) More Doug Sahm any day of the week. Be well Otis.

No I didn't know Soap Creek existed. Were we so bad at the Dillo? Anyhow, I started driving my Red '68 Bonnie convertible from Ft. Hood down to Galveston on weekends sleepin' on the beach in my car. You know instead of Austin. HOT & SWEATY Austin. Ocean and beach. But eventually 1974 the Fetus called me home couldn't stay away. lol.... Love Joe. WOW, Korner, Ray & Glover were big. Dave Snake Ray wanted to join our band (One Horse) in '88-90. He loved our stuff. Bonnie Raitt recorded her first LP's at Spiders studio in Cambridge, MN. Can't believe Joe & I didn't run into each other. I knew almost everybody at the Fetus. What a great trip. Thanks Otis. My Electric Fetus T-shirt read "No turn, left un- Stoned'. with this relaxed bird. A turn.

What fabulous stories! Joe provides great insight on what made Doug Sahm so special. Another aspect of Doug's gifts is that he was a dynamic band leader - a conductor that got the best out the players in live situation. Lastly, his true love was always country music (Texas Western Swing in particular) and his last recordings which comprised the posthumous album release "The Return of Wayne Douglas" are a treat for fans of the genre.
