The Ferrari 348 has long been considered the "black sheep" of the Ferrari V8 family -- the "middle child" that purists don't like. Today I'm reviewing a Ferrari 348 to show you why it deserves a better reputation than it has.

It gives the tail lights a timelessly oldschool look, unlike naked lights which from that era look just dated and ugly now. The McLaren F1 suffers from this a bit

In my opinion the 348 is one of the prettiest and most under appreciated Ferrari of its time, I prefer the 80s styling over the 355 and other later V8 Ferrari. Not that I care but of course, the 355 is superior in performance and handling, which is a pretty car as well compared to later Ferraris. But the 348 has these sharper and cleaner lines that truly define an era of Italian design. Also, the black sills on the early cars are reminiscent of the 70s/80s Ferraris. I also think the interior has a very pretty and minimalistic look; just look at those beautiful orange gauges and that gear shifter. Many owners decided to replace the original rims with aftermarket or 355/360 rims, but I personally think they are one of the prettiest details of the 348. Also, they do not look anything like those on the Cherokee. Finally, I don't understand Doug complaining about the rear grille covering the lights, it is just another beautiful example of 80s Ferrari styling and I prefer it over the 348 Speciale design.

For me this car came too late. It has all the characteristics of a mid 80s car. The exterior maybe would be too much futuristic for the 80s but its sooooo beautiful In the 90s, the people started to be more focused on quality and details and this car wasn't the best in those 2 things The cars began to be easier to drive and the 348 isn't the easiest to push to the limit If it was launched earlier it would become a great success Apologize me if i've made some mistakes lol :(

Demise, Devised I agree, to be honest I’m one of those people that actually don’t like the testarossa at all. It’s just tacky and overhyped like the Toyota Supra is. It looks like someone stomped on a 348. I understand that some people might love it for its nostalgic status but aside from that, like the Lamborghini countach, it’s not that great of a car. I might a little biased against this car but it feels so overrated and overhyped that I can’t help but don’t like it.
@Charlie-Charlot
@Charlie-Charlot 4 жыл бұрын
Demise, Devised funny you say that, about two months ago I drove a Ferrari 458 and a cayman gts. I was so hyped about the Ferrari, every told me that it was the best car they ever driven, I remembered how this car was praised in top gear, then I drove it.. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was. It felt like the car was way too easy to drive, nowhere near as raw and exciting as I thought it would be. That being said it’s still an incredible car, it’s fast, the steering is incredible responsive but it doesn’t feel that much connected to the road, it was way too comfortable in my opinion. Then I drove the Porsche, I can’t emphasize how much better this car felt. Still almost everybody I know who drove the Ferrari would swear about it. I don’t try to say that it’s a bad car, nor that the testarossa is, but the difference of attention and love some cars can receive over others really staggers me.

@@HollywoodF1nah thx im good "The Ferrari 348, in tb and ts forms, made its debut at the 1989 Frankfurt Auto Show. “To many, it was Best in Show,” said Road & Track. “Free of Testarossa excess -- in width, overhang, styling -- this 3.4-liter V-8 is compact, quicker on the track ... ideal.” But the Ferrari 348 proved not so ideal in the real world. Road-testers couldn’t quite match Ferrari’s claimed 5.6 seconds 0-60 mph and 171-mph top speed. Worse, they found the car a challenge to drive near or at the limit. Other shortcomings included a harsh ride, a wandering front end at high speed, and a stiff gearbox"
@HollywoodF1
@HollywoodF1 5 жыл бұрын
@@NSixtyFour You've equated 0-60 to how fast a car is. Like whoever can get to the bottom of the onramp the fastest is the champion. That's not driving to me. Any grandma can mash the accelerator. A fast car, to me, is the whole package. Quick steering, quick braking, a tight chassis and a responsive engine. A track is the best measure of that to me, Top Gear-style. Which one of these cars is the fastest to you? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9OaqLeH2LjQnJc.html

Despite its low ranking among enthusiasts I've always found the 348 to be one of the most attractive cars of the 90s. It was a radical departure from the design of the 328. Where the 328 was curvy, sporty and agile looking the 348's lines were sharp, clean and tight. I hesitate to call it a baby Testarossa because it's so much more beautiful. The TR with its long wheelbase, stubby rear and too much nose (crumple-zone solution?) doesn't come close to the perfectly proportioned 348. It's like they threw out the worst design elements of the big, awkward looking TR, kept the best and incorporated them into a gorgeous, compact body. Aesthetically, everything works, even the "grill" and especially the rims which were so perfectly matched it's as if the car was designed around them. Thanks, Doug. Great review.
@mattarnold198
@mattarnold198 6 жыл бұрын
I think they should've made the Testarossa's tail longer to sort out the proportions, not make the entire car smaller! The side profile (particularly the profile of the doors) was done better on the Testarossa than the 348 though but my favourite distinct feature on the 348 was the one Doug criticized: the slatted rear lights cover.

The strakes, including the ones over the lights, is what MAKES it AWESOME! The Testarossa also had them over the lights, and everyone LOVES them on that. The real issue with the 348 is it was slated by the press as being a "Baby Testarossa" in a bad way. Now, after all these years, the baby brother has grown up.

I agree with everything you are saying Doug, I finally got my 348 after 6 months of waiting for my brother to let it go. The handling and feel of the steering is sooooo much fun. The other wonderful thing is 4th gear. This is where the real power comes into the game .. When you are doing 90 to 100 MPH in 4th there is a lot of torque .. I can jump almost a city block ahead of other cars with ease. This is my second ferrari. I had a Daytona in the 70's (12 cylinder 6X's 2 barrel carborators) .. I don't remember the Daytona feeling like the 348 which is a life-sized Go Cart !!!

The orange gauge faces and font are part of the nice thing with these years though! The 80's were wild times really, and a lot of fun. .Anyone familiar with late 70's through 90's sports cars has probably come across lowering parking brake levers, too. This looks like a pretty nice car, and having driven a few Ferrari's when working on them, I have gained an appreciation of their quirks. I'd love to be able to afford a 348, that is if I fit in it well! Hell, I'd be happy with a late 70's Dino 2+2!

The Ferrari 348 TB (the coupe) was my first diecast car, a blue one from Bburago. It was destroyed (burned) almost 15 years ago. I didn't remembered its model (I wasn't the true petrolhead I'm trying to be today), I only knew that was a Ferrari. A month ago, I was looking for an Aston Martin V12 Vantage (my favorite one in the last 4 years) diecast and remembered the Ferrari, not the exact model but the strange blue Ferrari I've had sometime. Until you post this video. 1991 Ferrari 348 TB. I literally cry when I get the model and looked for it on Internet. So great, thanks!

The planned intention of straight lines over the rear lights (also used in quite some mercedes models for example) was to keep them partially clean and more visible while the rest of the rear got dirty during bad weather (tossing up dirty water). It turned out tho, after some years, that it wasn´t really going as planned :)

@StratMatt777

I really enjoyed this video and learned a lot about the 348- good job! I'm sure that all of the weird quirks you mentioned about this car come from it being designed with an intentional resemblance to the Testarossa (including the wheels). The orange instruments are 100% Testarossa... I heard years ago that a lot of the interior features of the TR (like the windshield wiper and turn signal stalks) "came out of the Fiat parts bin". Though the Testarossa's grille IS functional- it sends cooling air to the front brakes. Also, I'm pretty sure that the TR's automatic seatbelts were "normal" automatic seatbelts that ran up the A pillar (like on my '92 Nissan 240SX)- these belts are SUPER weird (and stupid!) HEADROOM: How tall are you and how does the 348's headroom compare to the Testarossa? The only thing this car needs is new wheels and to paint the black pieces on the bottom body-color (or buy a later 348 on which they are body-color), and to make replacement T-tops out of fiberglass so they can be painted body-color too.

DavidoggL In the automotive service world, whenever you refer to the side of a car or a component placement in a car, you always refer to it as if you're sitting down from the drivers seat of the car. So rather than saying something like, the driver side headlight. You would say, the left headlight. See the problem here is that you don't know if the car is LHD or RHD. If the car were RHD but you were assuming it's LHD because you're in North America, then you would be talking about the wrong headlight. Same thing goes for when a car goes in to get its tires rotated. But if you're sitting in the driver seat and your perspective of the car is from that point, it doesn't matter if the car is LHD or RHD. The Left headlight is always the Front Left. The exact same thing applies if you are looking at a car in a video. You can't reliably relay the correct information about which side you're talking about because, are you looking at the car from the front of the car or the rear of the car? Are you pointed forwards or are you pointed backwards? So it is universally accepted that components of the car are always referred to as if you're sitting down in the drivers seat since you are always looking forward in the car.

LT Guile the cheese-slicer side intakes are what made the 348 for me. It was like a mini Testarossa, arguably one of the most iconic supercar of 1980 after the Countach ruled the 70s.

Toni, I admit the tail lights and side intakes are what set it apart from other Ferraris. I have seen ads in the back of Car & Driver magazine where they sold aftermarket parts to expose the rear tail lights. The aftermarket designs were actually handsome and made of metal. Wished I could see one with the redesigned covers.

Ferrari is famous for round tail lights. But if it's a square one, Ferrari will put the the black strips on it. Just to differentiate between round lights and the square ones

The 348 is by far my most favorite Ferrari of all time. It came out just a few months after my birth, but it's so modern looking compared to any other car that came out in the late 80s. I always felt that, compared to other Ferrari models of that period, the design was facing more towards the future instead of just resembling what was cool back then. Lamborghini did a similar approach with the Diablo, but I think the 348 still wins the competition!

Didn't realize how similar my 1994 C4 Corvette is to a Ferrari. It has the same design parking brake, and also has the targa top storage built in. Except better since I don't need to move the seat forward to store it. It also makes the exact same horsepower.
