CHECK OUT DOUG'S MERCEDES ON CARS & BIDS!
crsnbds.com/a140
Well, folks, here it is: My 1998 Mercedes-Benz A140, now live on Cars & Bids. As I mentioned in my video announcing the sale of this car, I can't say I particularly enjoyed the A140, as it's pretty dull and uninspiring. Fortunately, it's quirky and weird, it's in decent shape, it has a 5-speed manual transmission, and it's titled in the U.S. - so if you want to win cars and coffee without spending big money, this is how to do it. My A140 is also offered with no reserve, which adds to the fun. Not that there was much fun to begin with.

Multiplas are an absolute horror to maintain, not that much for the mechanical reliability, as FIAT engines are usually really good, but on the electrical and specially on the cosmetical sides: ECU, wiring and sensors were a pain, plastics, rubbers and trims literally dissintegrate overtime, body panels were thin as f., painting on most FIATS are like a thin mist with a laque coat thinner than your spit... And new or used replacements are EXTREMELY escarce to get, as they didn't sold that much units compared with the A Class. Owning a Multipla is a complete different league compared with the A Class, at least with a Mercedes you have a decent global reliability overtime, that a FIAT doesn't have.

This sounds like my experience buying a limousine. I bought it as a funny novelty, drove it for a few months, then got sick of it and got rid of it. At the end of the day, it drove more or less like the sedan it was based on with the added inconvenience of being slightly harder to park and with less leg/head room because of the partition, so I just traded it for the regular sedan version of the same car.

20 years ago I had one. It was a 170 CDI Auto Elegance. Pros: good driving position, nice AC and heater, with almost instantaneous temperature control, huge interior space compared to the size of the car, smooth gearbox (torque converter) and low fuel consumption. Cons: the ride was awful, with a extremely harsh suspension (terrible). Slow steering. There were rattles and weird noises everywhere. Best: I paid 15000€ (used car). Two years and a half later (and more than 50000km) I sold it, getting 12000€. The servicing was only a complete tyre set, two oil changes with intake and oil filters and new brake pads. Not bad at all.

There's one of these running around DC at the moment. It has diplomatic plates on so obviously was brought over by/for embassy staff (not sure which embassy, but it's one of those in the Van Ness area of town). One thing to keep in mind is how much money Doug made from the videos of the A-Class. His first one generated almost 1 million views which probably translates to a few thousand dollars (we don't know how much exactly due to the numerous factors that go into it), and it's quite possible this video will also generate a decent amount of income, although probably not as much. Combined, these videos will therefore go some ways to offsetting the cost of importing and improving this vehicle, although my guess is that he'll still be left with a loss of a few thousand, even after factoring in the "Doug bump" in the auction sale.

First of all, hello from Germany 😄 My grandfather had a a140 Avantgarde (you didn't mentioned the Avantgarde) and he really loved it. Based on my experience from Europe I can definitely agree that almost everyone disregarded their a-class. But trust me when I said that my grandfather doesn't fit into this category, he repaired everything, he washed it by hand and so on and so forth. He actually gave me the car when I got my licence and I honestly love it. Maybe I like it that much because it was my first car. When I gave it away 3 months ago it was in a almost perfect condition, no rust, no faults, the only expection was that the sunroof didn't worked. But yeah honestly it is a great first car, it's small, mine had everything no blank button and it became a legend at school and me and other colleagues Honor it in our graduation book. Maybe it's just the fact that it was my first car, but man I frickin love the a class, I have so many great memories and I truly miss it already.😥 I would also agree again based on my knowledge of a-class owner, that your a class is the cleanest in the world, great video👍 You brought back some memories

My wife has a 20-year-old A160 long wheelbase that we bought new (in South Africa). As a family runabout, it has provided excellent - but unexciting - service, the long wheelbase and the removable rear seats making it a carry-all for some huge cargo! The space in the rear (which your short-wheelbase car wouldn't have) is such that I could "sit behind myself" as a six-footer with more leg space available than in any other car I've experienced - period. On the open road, it has its limitations but as a predominantly city-use car, we still see no reason to replace it. Also, since my wife and I are both in our seventies, I guess we're the correct demographic for this sort of car. I still refuse to drive it while wearing an "old man" hat, though...

The B200 (and more recently B220) has been a relatively common popular car here in Canada - I see them daily - they are actually based on the A200 of the late 90s - except they make closer to 200HP (PS) and are actually pretty peppy compared to the A140. I've thought about picking up a 2014-2016 as a 3rd car to have in the household just for running around in town that is good on gas and cheap to operate compared to our large SUV & pickup truck.

I could not have gotten an A200. The car needs to be 25 years old to bring into the USA. Same reason I didn’t get a Fiat Multipla or Audi A2 - none were 25 yet (or were when I got the A140). A lot of Europeans are commenting here confused why I didn’t import a new M3 wagon or an E60 M5 Touring or whatever - you can’t! Gotta be 25.

I honestly think that you should try the A2 as it is basically a luxury lupo with a lot more quirkiness than the A-class and the car it is based on. It's made of aluminium so no fear of any rust and the 90HP diesel one and the 1.6 FSI(which I've heard is a bit less reliable than the TDI) makes it feel pretty quick. Or you could go the other route and get a 3L which is the most economical one with 3L/100KM(78MPG US). It would really be interesting to see a review for one on your channel.

I still think you should try the Audi A2, if only for the street cred of saying "I only managed 65MPG on the journey" (and yes that is American MPG). I'm sure the A class was one of the most economical cars Doug has owned. I almost said the most economical then remembered the Nissan S-Cargo.

A review of a beater A-Class isn't exactly the Dougcember final 2023 video that I had hoped for, but with the year making its way into the history books, I just want to say: Doug, thank you for the fun and engaging content you produce. You had yourself a heck of a year. All the best in 2024. But the real question is: what was a bigger deal to you in 2023, the arrival of the CGT or the arrival of a new kid?

It was very versatile especially when hauling stuff like my bicycle. And now I only have a ND-miata :-) I had a lot of fun driving this car. I used to drive these as rentals back 25+ years ago. For reasons beyond me, when they were new, they would not go into reverse. Which is an issue when you pick up the rental in the parking garage of the airport. Only way to get the car into reverse was to literally slam the gear selector into its reverse position, with a force so high you would think the stick would break. After 2 or 3 times doing this, the car would go into gear as smooth as any other car. Great job finding a blue one. There were a lot of grey A class cars in the rental fleets of Germany. A lot.

Oh man these. I was in my mid 20s and was on a European IT & ERP implementation project, so I traveled all around plants in Europe and rented this and that. On my first trip to Newcastle, UK I was pleasantly surprised when I was “upgraded” to a Mercedes by Avis. Well the joke was on me! I got into it and realized immediately what it was. same color as this, I believe it had a 1.6L, same spec, even had a cassette (this was 2002, tho bonus is my MP3 player cassette adaptor worked!). It was horrible on the motorway, had to downshift on hills in the north of the UK to maintain the speed limit, merging and overtaking was an exercise in futility. In a wind storm, it would blow around at motor way speeds. Interior felt cheap, seats I recall were decent. I will say it was easy to park, ride wasn’t terrible, cargo space was ok for the size it was. it looked different? At least renting a smart car there it was something totally different and I felt that had a certain charm, A class, no…. When I was in Germany in 2018 I walked around a used car lot near my hotel so see what used stuff cost there, these were maybe 2000-3000 euros back then for a clean one.

Thing is it isn't even weird, the only weird fact is that it was Mercedes' first foray into economy cars. It's was a boring slightly overpriced hatchback that old people bought because of brand recognition. It's most distinguishing and famous feature was, that it had Electronic Stability Control on the base model, after it had famously tipped over during an Elk-test. I think an A2 would be even more boring, because it's actually a good car ahead of it's time.

Hey Doug, thanks for the nice video! Don't be too sad about your ownership experience though, it was surely worth the hassle! As many others, I can fully recommend you to try out an A2, I've send you mine to review a while ago (maybe you remember the attached news article about a small bavarian workshop which specialized in A2's :-) ). If you buy one, I strongly advise you to either buy the 75 HP diesel or petrol variant, as the more powerful engines are troublesome (the 1.6 110 HP one has some flaws which will pop up sooner than later, the 90 HP TDI version has some unique engine features that aren't available anymore). The exchange vehicle of the workshop has over 500 000 km at the moment and no rust, the longevity of this vehicle is truly second to none!
