The biggest benefit of the car nobody bothered to mention: when you are done driving you don't need to search for a parking space. You simply put it in your bag and go wherever you want to go.

Credit goes to the owner for how well this car was looked after. A fun little thing. Samall but fully developed. :-) Pretty much the only thing that didn't get the special treatment is the exhaust. They could've done something fancy with it. Some Kei cars made it to outside Japan, with larger engines (or had turbo) so it has potential!

I will have to respectfully disagree. If you have a look at the ones from a couple of years ago and earlier, the introduction and transitions were more natural, so to speak. There were outside recordings while the vehicle was being driven. And before that there were scenes which had somewhat of a spontaneous air to them, even though they might have been conceived beforehand... but they tended not feel artificial. This might be somewhat of a glorification of what is referred to as the supposed past but it seemed like a time, a great time where there was less of a focus on monetary aspects like viewer counts and catering to viewer patterns, using simplification and repetition for example, in order to preserve the viewership and therefore the income and in some sense also an economic dependence possibly impairing creative aspects.

Altho having an intake for the AC for such a small car considering the AC pretty much takes a lot of power from the engine when its on, is pretty genius if you ask me. Even if it gets really underpowered, you at least can enjoy the AC when travelling at higher speeds. My car has 0.9 3 cylinder turbocharged engine and when I turn on the AC, the engine also loses quite more than I would expect from it when turning it on. Nonetheless, its really fun car to drive and turns out quite more reliable than the standard 4 cylinder cars.
@danielnelson4881
@danielnelson4881 2 жыл бұрын
@@royliber3824 "quite more reliable than the standard four cylinder cars" That is SUCH a broad, bold, and likely untrue thing to say... Lol. You know that rotaries were reliable for at least some people right? Ferrari's can be more reliable than their owners Toyota's, that they drive during the week. Not every engine is made the same. Even within what's supposed to be the same exact engine. Sometimes you get a turd from a really good, known to be reliable engine. Sometimes you pull a gem out of a (toilet) bowl of turds. To say anything at all is reliable, based on a sample size of one, is incredibly misleading and probably inaccurate. That being said, I'm incredibly happy to hear that your vehicle has been reliable for you, as well as a joy to drive. Did you mention what it was? Did I somehow miss that?

Honda N-BOX: a very very tall and narrow MPV-ish thing and is THE BEST SELLING CAR in Japan, period. Even more popular than Prius, Yaris, or all sorts of normal cars. 2: Daihatsu Copen: a cute sports car just like AZ-1, but with a automatic hard top, and a swappable plastic body panels. You can buy panel kits separately from Daihatsu and make it look like a completely different car. More importantly, you can buy one today. This is not 90’s madness, it’s 2020’s madness. 3: Mitsubishi i: Many people know i-MiEV, which was the world’s first mass production electric car, but there was gasoline engine version of it. Very futuristic design even by modern standards, and it was rear midship because the bonnet was just too short. All of these might be difficult to find in the US, but are not so rare at all in Japan. Come to Japan, Doug!

8:09 An A/C compressor is an A/C compressor, Doug, it doesn't matter how many vents or how big the car is, if it's there it's there and if it's on it's on. It's the same compressor used in several other Suzuki kei cars including the van/wagon/hatch style ones designed for 4 passengers and needs to cool a much larger space. And it's a good thing, too, as I'd hate to try to track down an A/C compressor for a car with only 5000-ish ever made including the Cara.

Definitely an awesome and interesting little car that I had never heard of before. The more of these little Japanese kei cars I see on your videos, the more I like them. Can you imagine if one of these was completely modified and converted to electric? Have the engine yanked out, and then a large battery pack stuffed in both the front and in the back? That would make a wicked little sports car EV with lightning fast acceleration because of the low weight and small size of the car.

As a Suzuki Cappuccino owner, so same powertrain as the AZ-1, I can add a few things: Technically the Cappuccino is also mid engine, since the motor, while in the front, is mounted to the rear of the front wheels, so it's a front mounted mid-engine roadster. While by no means a rocket 64 horse is pretty good for the size and weight of the car. Really these cars shine on twisty 2 lane back roads. They are the very definition of "roadster". You can really toss these around back road curves at stupid speeds. They just stick to the road. My wife and I just did a 250 mile loop drive yesterday, the final 30 or so miles were on an Interstate. They will go 70, but they really don't like it. It's probably most happy at about 63-67 or so MPH. By Japanese law they fuel starve at 140 KMH, so about 85 give or take. Storage is terrible on all of the ABC cars. I cannot get a large pizza into the trunk of the Capp, and once the 3 piece hardtop is stored back there, there is literally room for nothing. Probably safes a lot of money, since when you are out and about there is no room for even the smallest impulse buy. Oh, and BTW, they only have about a 5 5 gallon gas tank, which seems small until you realize they get close to 70 MPG. You can go all day on a $15 fillup.

That's actually a pretty fun little car and I wouldn't mind owning one. Currently I already have a pretty small car myself (Nissan Pixo) but this one looks even smaller. Not too keen on red though as I prefer black and it's a shame that the driver seat is on the 'wrong' side. Also like that Mazda Speed "Space Auto". 😅 EDIT: These sell for 15.000 to 20.000 dollars? Holy crap! I wasn't expecting that! I thought this would be more in the range of 6000-8000. Hell, that Pixo of mine was €8000 brandnew back in 2012 and is a 5-door; although good luck trying to fit passengers in the rear compartment so I just use it as a 2-person car with the rear bench folded down for increased space for groceries and such. Still, I wasn't expecting this thing to be so expensive. Now I'm guessing that the original retail price in Japan was much lower and they only sell for 15k-20k is due to their rarity and desirability for collectors? I can't imagine someone in Japan actually shelling out $20k on a tiny car like this when it first released.
@jamiepeterson5646
@jamiepeterson5646 Жыл бұрын
They did make some black Mazdaspeed and M2 versions. And you're right about the price - they originally sold for 1.5 million yen (about 11k USD), so they're a fair bit more now than they were when they were built.

Some of the cost of these is going to be over the whole having to import it from Japan and all the legalistic paperwork that has to happen for that, which in the US is a headache and a half.
@DanakarEndeel
@DanakarEndeel Жыл бұрын
@@austingee238 Yeah, I can imagine that getting one shipped in a container is gonna run you quite a bit of cash (I once had a Sterling Sovran kitcar brought over from the UK). Over here in the Netherlands the paperwork is a pita as well and feels like they just do it on purpose to milk extra cash. Like every import you have to get a full examination of the car first and pay a ton of cash just to register it on Dutch plates; even though we already have our yearly MOT examinations anyway. Buying the car is easy, but the costs are in getting it to you, registering it, and then the annual servicing with lots of costs when something breaks. Ah well, I'm still happy with my tiny litte Nissan Pixo. It may be just a tiny A-type shopping cart but it's black (my favorite color for a car), has AC/power windows/central locking, and it gets me where I need to go. It just had one MAJOR flaw in that the AC condenser&radiator sits in a fully open space behind the bumper. So it's in plain view at road level without any protection; so that one got hit by tiny stones and other debris constantly while driving on the freeway and eventually sprung a leak resulting in a pretty nasty repair bill of almost €500. So I had the mechanic add some of that black aluminium racing mesh across the front that I bought for less than 20 bucks off Amazon. Now at least it has some additional protection against incoming road debris and it also looks cool (actually, it now looks like how the car should have rolled off the assembly line). Pretty ridiculous how these companies make such (intentional?) mistakes when a bit of metal mesh could have prevented this. Apparently also several Porsches (911's, Boxsters and Caymans) have exactly the same issue where the radiator/condenser is completely unprotected (which is crazy because ... it's a Porsche! They couldn't even add some mesh in the bumber in the factory??). So any Porsche people out there may wish to check and put a cheap mesh grill of less than $20 across the front that not only looks cool but may also save you a ton of money from a broken AC unit. I imagine that the ones from Porsche are a lot more expensive than my little Nissan.😅

As an owner of an AZ-1 I know what the door reflectors are for. They are to slightly reduce the number of times you bang your head on the open door! The LH vent is functional, it cools the engine bay. RH vent does not go into the intake, it is directly ducted to the intercooler. The official position of the spare wheel IMHO looks terrible, I never carry mine at all. The AZ-1 was engineered and prototyped in the UK by people who knew what they were doing and handles brilliantly, it has to be driven on twisty country lanes to really appreciate it.

My dad had a 1975 Cadillac coupe deville, that’s almost a foot longer than twice the length of this car, my caprice is 6 inches short of twice the length of this thing.

Dos the AZ-1 change lengths based on the video? (Doug "I'm 6'3"/6'4" tall" DeMuro...) 🤣

THISSSSS.... is the kind of car I'd like to see more reviews of, instead of another boring new SUV.

This is definitely Doug at his most entertaining, but I get why he does so many boring modern vehicles, he’s one of the best names on KZfaq when it comes to car reviews. Most car owners care way more about what the interior is like and comfort of the vehicle than performance credentials. KZfaq car reviews five years were all these tuned sports cars and usually had an obnoxious presenter telling some unrelated story. I think the only car channel that gets more views per month than him is ChrisFix so I can’t really blame for doing things the way he does

Best part about this video is that cars will never stop being created and these odd ones will continue to appear, which in turn, means Doug will be able to create videos for years

Not fully true. Odd consumer cars similar to these will never be created again due to modern regulations. Cars today require more safety features which means they are heavier and all look the same.
