Hollywood stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks tied the knot on March 28, 1920. The powerhouse couple was a media sensation as they honeymooned across Europe. Upon their return to the states they moved into a home they called PickFair, a lavish mansion that became almost as famous as they were. The home was a wedding present to Pickford from Fairbanks. The 18-acre estate is said to have housed Beverly Hills’ first private home swimming pool.

Why is it that actors from the past are famous but not that famous. It takes the future to make them more famous then they were.and here comes the future and gave her the recognition that she should had given.so sorry to our SWEETHEART that it took this long to know you and to watch you. And to bring to you what you should had been.so heres to you our SWEETHEART may you rest in peace.

Mary Pickford was Canadian. Her family home was on University Avenue in Toronto, where the world famous Sick Children's Hospital now stands. There is a plaque out front.

That area was considered "The Ward" a slum of sorts. Apparently her mother rented a room to a theatre manager who got her daughter into acting.

More people should celebrate Mary when it comes to putting her foot down and going to battle with the strongest men in the film industry in an era where anything goes and studios had an iron grip on their talent...i know it was with her husband and his friend, chaplin, but she was a part of a pivotal moment in hollywood

For those who don't know (including the video channel??) the actress at 2:44 is Bebe Daniels. Not Mary Pickford who had light hair. As a teenage actress Bebe Daniels was Harold Lloyd's first leading lady. Small world back then in Hollywood as Harold was a good friend to Doug and Mary though more so Mary. Chaplin was Fairbanks silent clown friend and Harold was in second place. Mary from what I've read of the Golden duo was less than charmed by the Limey.

Mary Pickford was America's sweetheart in the 1910s and Lillian Gish was America's sweetheart in the 1920s, but I may have gotten that backwards and it was Lillian Gish, 1910s and Mary Pickford, 1920s. Anyway, my point is that every decade of Hollywood's Golden age had an America's sweetheart, I can't remember 100℅ which women were though. I think it was Jean Harlow in the 1930s (or was it Ginger Rogers), Lana Turner in the 1940s (or was it Ingrid Bergman), Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s (Elizabeth Taylor also, 1950s to early 1960s).

Monroe and Taylor definitely wouldn't have been americas sweetheart, not that they are bad, it's just that they were scandalous and so as Jean Harlow

The suggestion that Pickford began drinking because she became less popular in later life is NOT true. Her WHOLE family had drinking problems. Lotty, Jack and her mother and her father that abandoned them early were drunks at some stage. Mary used to drink secretly and Fairbanks made a reference to it when they came back from one of their world tours, when they both were still very popular. Pickford's apparent fall popularity in later life (which I also think is a bit of a myth) was not because of lack of suitable roles (look at Stella Maris, and Suds, where she plays both very ugly roles and in violent situations). This idea that Pickford could only play child-like roles is a later invention. She played many tough roles some of them brilliant. THE real problem of actors from the Silent era to the sound era was a change in taste and genre of the public. Moving into the roaring 20s and flapper era what was needed was stories that related to that change.

Also, it's been well documented in Pickford and Fairbanks biographies alike that Fairbanks was decidedly *not* "fiercely" jealous and that this was one of the big points and pluses about his appeal to Mary (who was coming out of an abusive, alcoholic relationship)- Fairbanks was very affable and certainly never threatened and seemed to really genuinely enjoy his wife's superior success.

So true. I think that her Mothers death destroyed Mary. She could had survive to the sound era but i think she felt lost without her family...
