DRoss is that much of a "leader" he is trying to get elected to Holyrood through the back door by standing as a list candidate; he doesn't have the balls, confidence, call it what you want, to stand as a constituency candidate. If elected he will have a dual mandate and have duties as an MP (supposedly based in Westminster) and as an MSP (supposedly based in Holyrood), neither of which can have his full attention as they are 400 miles apart. By doing this he is devaluing, and showing his contempt for, Scottish democracy.

What Douglas Ross said was wrong. The rights and culture of the travelling people in Scotland should be respected. There was I believe some problems at the traveler's site in Elgin several years ago and this may have clouded his judgement.

I have a questions, and I’m uneducated on the topic so I hope someone can shed some light Most societies were built by nomadic tribes settling down in one area due to good farmland, fast forward 10k years and now the view of a fair society would be “everyone pays their fair share for the betterment of everyone”. From my understanding you can’t do that in Britain without an address and a stable job, and complete integration into our society. I welcome the idea of multiple plots of land used as a “traveler circuit” so they can explore our beautiful countryside, but does this not make any nomadic tribes that do not pay their fair share but use public resources a net negative on the country? I don’t know what they contribute to society is the main crux of the issue, but happy to learn and change my prejudices!

I think in fairness this is one of the most Scottish things Douglas Ross could have said. I'd say in general most Scots are decently progressive and welcoming of everyone EXCEPT travellers. One mention of them and you'll get 15 pricks telling you they've had quad bikes stolen by them you'll have another 20 telling you what a mess they make etc. I have great respect for Patrick Harvie. Douglas Ross is a hard man to call out on anything other than racism and as well as seeking to become the leader of the main opposition party in Scotland he also has to be elected as an MSP in order to take a seat in that Parliament. His racist remarks will go down well with his voter base and I'm sorry to say more than a few others including many traditional working class Labour voters. This would play out exactly the same way if he was standing in an English constituency there are very few of us who can claim to be truly without bias. That's the real issue !
