I started taking up running in the last 6 months (I'm 46). The hip flexors on both sides were so strained it was painful to move. I found stretching after my workout has been extremely helpful. I only run 2-3 miles at a time, 2-3 times a week.

This is really helpful. When I started troubleshooting the issue, I kept finding a bunch of hip flexor stretches. While this provides for some relief, it doesn't address the reason they are tight and hurting. Your video actually addresses this, which is great! My form has been more like the first (before) example. I guess I've been trying to maintain good posture, but I've exaggerating everything (chest out, shoulders back, arched back, etc.). I thought I was doing the right thing, but I was making things worse. Thank you so much!

Douglas, Im really pleased I watched your video. I am in a pretty depressing situation. I love running its my favourite form of exercise but over time its become far too painful that the enjoyment has gone completely. I have scoliosis of the spine and I used to run long distances as well as play rugby and train HIIT I damaged my hip flexors on both sides and since then getting back into running is very painful, i now feel discomfort in my back hips and along the inside of my knees. Sorry for the lengthy comment, but do you think this could be down to tight hip flexors and curvature in the spine?. I have taken up yoga and i am now doing very short sprints as i find that less painful than jogging on the knees.

i understand that what you described above is essentially Anterior Pelvic Tilt exhibition during running, right? but how did you help them fix APT? even when standing, the natural angle between my lower waist and upper thigh is bent about 20 degrees, thus forcing the lower spine to bow out. I am doing lunge stretches, not sure what else I can do to stretch the hip flexors. thanks a lot
@douglaswisoff
@douglaswisoff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi....static stretching the hip flexor doesn't usually translate to lengthening it in any long term way. What you need to do is look on you tube for "Supine Groin Stretch" exercise, which is a little time consuming, and passive, but seems to help some folks.. Then you need to use your body when running to allow the muscle to stretch out. Use it in the range that it is designed for because with the anterior tilt you constantly use it in a shortened range. I could help you with that if you want to do some Skype sessions. Go to my website for more information on that. Best Douglas

Best comment I could make without seeing a video of you running, is that your probably holding a lot of tension in you torso and pelvic region. Do you have an anterior pelvic tilt? Learn how to relax and mobilize the pelvis when running. Send me a video if you want a more specific answer. Best

Seems very interesting! However, it is not said HOW to release the hip flexors, is it? Did I miss that?
@douglaswisoff
@douglaswisoff 4 жыл бұрын
No your never came across it in the first place. If you want to lengthen the Hip Flexor you are going to have to use it in a lengthened position or it will have no permanent effect. If you get it to release magically or you do an exercise or have a therapist release it, this will not automatically change your running form. If the form isn't consciously changed, you will just end up with the same issue and the hip flexor will shorten back up. So get it released, but improve your form at the same time. Or improve your form and this will allow the hip flexor to lengthen over time.

Tuck your hips. So your lower back isnt bowed and your glutes arent poking out behind your torso. In the first example(at 2:22) you can see his hips arent straight and his chest is raised and out. On the right you can see his hips are under him and his chest is relaxed. In fact the example on the left is better in every way that im able to see.
