Doug Polk Poker

5 жыл бұрын

Phil Ivey boats up in a button vs. blind battle against Nick Petrangelo. With $5,000,000 up top for first place, Nick faces an incredibly tough river decision with his baby flush. As he runs out of time bank cards, and the clock ticks down, he's forced to make a choice under pressure. Can he make this laydown?

I really like the fold. Phil Ivey knows he cannot be overbluffing this spot with his KhXx hands or he will be punting so much into a range that has an easy defense. So Petrangelo knows that it is very unlikely for Phil to be overbluffing this spot, which means that Ivey will very likely have less than 26.1% bluffs, which means Petrangelo would not be making a profitable calloff. Deeper analysis of river: For Ivey to be bluffing at least 26.1%, to balance out his combos of 3 AA, 3 JJ, 1 99, 6 combos of A9, 6 of J9, and maybe 9 combos of KX of hearts, and like 6 QX of hearts. This approx 34 combinations of value hands Ivey can have, so he needs at least 9 bluff combinations to be bluffing over 26.1% of the time (which is how often he must bluff to make Petrangelo completely indifferent with bluff catcher in this spot). So Ivey needs to be turning some kind of Kh hand into a bluff with at least 9 combos, and if he does not do it this often then Petrangelo can lay this down. But I would not put it past Ivey to be bluffing a spot like this, it just seems like a dicey spot to bluff for Ivey given he is facing a fairly uncommon line and his opponent is fairly polarized to a flush or bluff. So based off the fact that Ivey does not have a slam dunk great bluffing spot here, I like folding the 32. Even if Ivey is overbluffing this spot somehow, it was not likely that he was based off the way the hand played out, so I like playing safe and maybe over folding these spots a bit. But now if we are underdefending based off this logic, Ivey can start bluffing us wide and making a sick profit doing so, which means we must be careful in these spots to construct our calling range in a less exploitable way. So make sure if you underdefend this spot that you are not against a player who is capable of reading you as a player who will fold most of their hands to this raise. Or you will likely get owned. Sick hand I really enjoyed, make more vids Vanessa

You act like petrangelo would know the frequency that ivey would bluff with king of hearts. Sure if petrangelo had every hand that phil ivey played mapped out he might get a accurate statistic but how many keycard flush drse bluffs has petrangelo actually seen ivey do? Does he scower the internet searching for all the video clips of all televised clips of phil ivey playiing? How many key card fkush draw bluffs have u seen do on televised poker? I dont think there is more than one or 2. Do you actually think the# of televised hands ivey has played is a statistically significant sample size to gauge these bluffing frequencies. absolutely not, its the tip of the iceberg of the # of habds he has played in his lifetime. more accurate indicators would simply be how often is he raising all in on my river-bet in a tournament whether he is capable of raising all in on the river against me and my line with bluffs. another more sccurate indicator against players would be live reads but in case of phil ivey that might be hard, hes a great liar. But lookin at statsand wondering how many king high hesrt bluffs he woukd have is such an unaccurate measurement or indivation on how frewyently he actually does this. Phil ivey is not thinking about making sure he does this ~27.7% of the time rtc. he himself has stated he gauges his play with the habds hes being dealt, is he card dead or getting alot of premiums and bases his table image off of that To dictate his play

Phil Ivey could have Ace King, Ace Queen, Ace Jack, Ace ten. I'm sure it was tempting to call. Nice fold.

At 1:15 "Although pretty much ANYone can win those..." LOL! Considering this, as well as his Nov 21 Poker Hands upload ("Don't Ever Do This @ Poker Table") comment (ALSO at 1:15!), I feel it's fair to say that Doug's deft use of the Casually-Inserted Self-Deprecating Aside threatens to elevate his craft to a true art form.

Maybe I just don’t know the data but how often do players bluff all in in a tournament when they really don’t need to? You have the smallest possible flush when Ivey could have all boats seems like just a fold conceptually

Nick knew that Phil knew that Nick knew that Phil would never bluff there, so Phil decided to make a move where he actually DIDN’T bluff! Because why would Phil not just check it down for information if Nick knows that Phil always has it, and can just fold denying the information? Obvious valuebet. Ez fold. #HitTheMuck This is the kind of thinking these players are doing. - Joe Hachem 2015

So K10 with a heart is a check call on the turn from Nicks spot because of equity? So we want to bet when we have meh or strong equity and check call stronger combo draws?
@Nick-xu7ns
@Nick-xu7ns 5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Patrick I also wonder if Nick has any form of check raising range on the turn. Hard to balance both a lead and x/r range but he is elite. If so, K10 with a heart does make sense as a hand to put in the x/r range as it has stronger equity if the turn is checked back and we arent given a chance to bluff than a hand like K8 with a heart. But I'm not sure if he has a check raising range and if not, I don't see why K10 with a heart wouldn't be in the turn lead range at least some proportion of the time.

Great hand analysed like a boss :P . I dont get it though... How come it would make more sense to call with middling to lower flushes over higher flushes if ivey's is bluffing with Kh or Qh in this spot? Is it because a hand like QhTh or Th8h would be blocking hard Iveys bluffing range?
@Nick-xu7ns
@Nick-xu7ns 5 жыл бұрын
nik predom yes. If we know that Phil bluffs with Kh and Qh type hands (which is something we can't know for sure but for this hypothetical we will assume), then having K high and Q high flushes means that Phil's raise range on the river is more value heavy than it normally would be as we block the hands with which he has to bluff.
@Nick-xu7ns
@Nick-xu7ns 5 жыл бұрын
we also don't expect a 6 high flush to raise for value (it would value own itself against our flush heavy range). So all flushes have the same theoretical value meaning we'd be more inclined to call with a 5 high flush than a K high in that assumption.

Wouldn't be better to lead the turn with QhTx or KhTx as a bluff? I mean if I check/call those and get there on the river should I lead then? That's very transparent. I rather lead the turn with those. Maybe add Qh8x but I wouldn't even call the flop with Kh8x. Btw very good video, I like the part with the turn lead range.
