What is the Fourth Noble Truth of Buddhism? We'll look at this truth of "magga" or "the Path" through a dive into the Buddha's definition of it in his first sermon.
NOTE: Kwok Wai points out in the comments that the quote about stimulus and response apparently is not by Victor Frankl, and indeed it's not entirely clear who originated it. See: quoteinvestigator.com/2018/02...

Glad to be a Patron! 😊❤ Thank you, and I'm so happy to see how far this channel has gone in 2 years!

Doug, thank you for your videos. This one especially speaks to me as a fuller understanding of the eight fold path and a reminder to pause on social media. When I heard you say how you wanted to respond to people with whom you disagreed, that hit home and to a lesser extent, impulse shopping.

Very well said Doug! Yeah I too have a craving sometimes to correct people when they said something wrong or if someone speak ill of someone I like. The internet can bring out many desires from people. And hate/aversion can be grown easily. Isn't that why we see so many negative comments, people can be very hateful behind a keyboard. And yes the 4th noble truth is cultivation. It's not easy to go against the current of craving, if it was easy. We would be seeing many enlightened monks and nuns. Just like it's not easy to become wealthy, it is by far more and far more difficult to attain enlightenment. It's also easier to be reborn in heavens than to attain enlightenment 🙏

That's right Yasith, it's very easy to get overcome with anger or greed with all that surrounds us in life and now on the Internet. That's why we practice. 🙂

Hey Dough! great video btw I have a doubt regarding personality and Buddhism. I understand that the more attached one is to its self image the more we suffer due to the changing nature of life. Having this in mind, I have been questioning myself whether if it is recommendable to detach from my personality traits i.e. not enforce my self-image by sharing or saying things like "I like this", "I don't like this", "I am this way" and so forth. I don't mean to stop enjoying the things I already do and like, I mean to not pigeonhole myself by tagging things, especially on social media because I have been noticing that using them just enforces ego by wanting to control the way other people see us. My inner conflict now is: when going along the path should I detached from the things I enjoy like music for example? can an enlightened person have a favourite genre of movies? best regards!
@DougsDharma
@DougsDharma 3 жыл бұрын
Well what you're talking about are various possible practices you could use. The only question is whether they seem to work for you or not. So try them out and see! Just don't be too dogmatic about them: what works at one time may not work later on, and what works for one person might not for another.

Thanks for the video Doug, great work. Which video is the one you mentioned about the path potentially undermining itself by producing craving?
@DougsDharma
@DougsDharma 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which video you mean. If you're talking about the video at the end, you can find a link to it at the end of the video. (It's this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLqhnMV9sr-VfIE.html ). But it's not about the path undermining itself, rather it's the reverse: craving can under certain, narrow circumstances help the path to come to fruition.

Well these should be seen more as practices than as commandments, so how would you practice with it? The Buddha also said that householders were expected to guard their wealth.
