Review of the Douk T4+ tube phono preamp ... a refinement of the T3, but with a VU meter. Uses General Electric GE5654 tubes. How does it sound?

The GE tubes are most likely NOS. I doubt there would be any newly made tubes that would be Joint Army Navy (JAN) certified now. By the way, there is absolutely NO issue with touching tube envelopes with bare fingers. It is standard glass. Too many got all upset because Halogen globes are sensitive to fingerprint grease. Tubes are not sensitive to it. Back in the day, people would change their own tubes. :) The reason the lights go off before the click is because the switch starts to open before clicking to the full open position. It's not really to do with sensitive, it is purely an on off switch combined with a volume pot. You'll find most combined switches like that act similarly.

Just got one of these on a whim, replacing a Pro-Ject phono box, and being driven from a Pro-Ject Essential II turntable. I was pleasantly surprised. There's very little in it between the two sound quality wise, and you get the headphone output thrown in, for quite a bit less than the phono box. Looks nicer too than the anonymous black plastic lump, but that is secondary,

The tubes are just buffers , but unit is op amp based solid state device 😬

Fosi seem to do the same thing, though the Fosi Box X2 seems to be better quality of the design

@@EsotericArctos I had the unit for about 2 weeks , sounded ok , decent built quality but definitely not worth the price 🤷‍♂️

No it isn't. It operates the tubes around 60 volts like Tube-01 / 03 which ones work's without the op amps too.

I have a Douk T3-PLUS. It 's a nice hybrid amp and tube rolling makes a definite difference to the sound, they are not only for show. I'm not convinced about the VU meter on the T-4. What's it's purpose?

Well i guess it's really just for adding a more visual element. Personally i could live without it, if it would make the thing 10 bucks cheaper.... but it's nice to have still. And yes, thankfully the tube part of these circuits are not just for show but they actually pass the audio through as the amplification itself it done by either transistors inside or OpAmps.

One could take the tubes out and then use the unit, if the phono stage works without the tubes, then obviously the tubes are for show. I doubt the tubes are for show only though.
