Don’t say bs, it has nothing to do with dysphoria. She was forced to live as a man by her father. The only reason she said she wanted to be a real man it’s because she would indeed have the rights men had and would have physical strength to protect the other girl. She even really wanted to dress with proper lady clothes.

A little confused. So she knew her before she became her stepmother? The stepmother always held a grudge against the father? And at the end the daughter killed him?

Song Fei seemed to have been a court lady that was sold into marriage with the father, so I doubt our protagonist knew her father was going to marry her. The father kept Song Fei hidden and locked inside a room, because it seems like Song Fei was a wild spirited young lady, and he couldn't get her subservient to him. The daughter kept Song Fei company and slowly fell in love with her because she could sympathies with her plight as woman of that time period ( as the daughter is forced by the same father to live by his male standards as his heir and 'his son', and not as the daughter she wanted to be). The story end on an ambiguous note, but I personally read in a metaphorical way.
