Honestly, instead of Poetic Justice, this could also be seen as an example of Dramatic Irony. Assuming the writer doesn't get away with the murder, he effectively killed a man in a moment of passion once he realized his own life sucked and was thus disposable. Less than a minute after he throws his own life away, his life would have immediately turned around, with his writing work receiving accolades and the wife that was cheating on him dying a painful death caused by her own infidelity. If he had just waited, he would have had an easy life of financial stability and freedom, and now he will spend the rest of his life in prison and not be able to enjoy any of it.

It started with the writers having a discussion about how the song the "Piano Man" is a song about Billy Joel just serenading everyone in the bar, and being kind of a dick about it. And from there they thought it would make a great sketch.
