In-depth review of the REI Stormhenge 850 Down Jacket. This gear is full of features designed to keep you warm when the temperatures drop, including pit-zips to regulate core ventilation, an insulated 3-point adjustable hood, a 2-way main zipper, and adjustable wrist closure and a hem-cord to keep out drafts.
Includes seeing the fit of both a size small (fits me perfectly, 5'8", 140 lbs) and a medium for a comparison view.
Adding a base and mid-layer, and this parka will keep you warm well below freezing. For active wear (hiking, cross-country skiing), likely down to 10%. Sitting around camp, definitely comfortable in the high 20's and low 30's.
Great jacket. Awesome value. Try it - you'll like it! And for the record, this is NOT a paid review.

Thanks for the review! I picked one up before doing any research because it was clearanced a couple weeks ago, and it seems to be a consensus that it was a good decision. :) I love the features and value combination.

Comment appreciated! Glad it helped and am sure you will really like the parka. I’ve been using mine daily even to near zero degrees - comfortable with a base and mid-layer when out active.

Its got welded baffles and taped seams and im pretty sure its their proprietary event fabric which is a lightweight gortex style fabric. I bought the same coat Tues and its insane value. Truth about the arcteryx comparison. But its def waterproof and windproof.

You mentioned your son had it for a couple of seasons... I assume REI has been making these for a while now, right? I just got a copper colored one and I love it. I just want to know if they have been making them for a while to have confidence that they won’t discontinue it

Pretty sure this jacket has been on out there at least 3 years. He's in his 2nd season with it and I'm in my first. I am very impressed with the quality.

Do you think it's better to wear fewer thiner layers with high quality down jackets? Seems like it would make more sense for body heat to circulate with lighter layers.

I'm a big fan of layering anytime, any activity. With that said, the finesse is in selecting how many to go with and adjusting for activity level and weather conditions. Can't go wrong with a good base layer that wicks moisture, then a fleece and finish with a an other layer ranging from hard shell to block wind and rain to a thicker down jacket. One of my lighter outer layers is the Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Hoodie. Not a down jacket but one heck of a great option. Watch for an upcoming gear review!

Hi there, I am 5'8, 72kg(155+lb), and about 34 inch waist. Per size chart I am a solid m. But when I put it on with a Baselayer and a light fleece, there is a ton of space inside. Good enough for another down vest. Should I get a size s? Thanks!
@fourbrothersgear
@fourbrothersgear 7 ай бұрын
If you are using it for sports - like for example, Ice fishing or sitting outside for any duration, the médium with extra space would be nice, though I really think you'd be fine with a small if you are moving at all (like walking) and certainly if cross country skiing or ice skating. This coat is super warm so I rarely would need more than base and light fleece. I'm 5'8, say 143 pounds and the small is perferct for me.

Which size do you recommend for me: 6'1"; 165 lbs ?
@fourbrothersgear
@fourbrothersgear 8 ай бұрын
That is a hard to say! Definitely not the small size. One of my boys has the medium size. He is about 5'10" and 165 pounds and it fits him really well, so with you only being about 3 inches taller and same weight, I think that would be good as well. Hope that helps -

I would have liked a little more on level of warmth. But other than that- good review.

Thanks for the feedback Nic. As for warmth, I can attest that it is super warm - even down to nearly zero if walking casually. The hood cinches tight to keep out drafts and for me, extremely warm (and...for a guy with like no hair...that is saying something!).

@@fourbrothersgear Thanks. I actually bought one. 50% off is hard to beat - $124. took it out in boat in cold and moving fast and felt great. The hood adjustments are really good. You did a great job advertising them.

@fourbrothersgear
@fourbrothersgear Жыл бұрын
@@user-bh3dk2oc6d Oh man. It would really depend on your activity level and layers. I've used mine in 10 F (-12 Celcius) when XC skiing and been fine...but keep in mind that's a pretty active sport. At that temp, -25 C) with a little wind, I"d want a really good base and mid-layer for sure and maybe something a bit longer.
