So I had taken all the animation courses in my undergrad in university and not one produced a satisfying animation so I went solo and made one myself. I had always wanted to do a car race and naturally I chose to model my favorite car, the AE86 and the Z-Tune. In total the modeling of the AE86, terrain, animation and rendering took 3.5 months. I had already modeled the Z-Tune last summer so I just took it and prettied it up for this project. People who have seen the Initial D anime will find this race to be familiar. The inspiration was all from that anime - the idea that an old, underpowered car with no ABS or other technology can outperform newer cars was this project's intent. Hoping they will announced a new season because there's a lot of stuff to adapt from the manga.

The animation is good no doubt, but still not up to initial d standards. Although to be fair this was made on home animation software, initial d uses more advanced CGI stuff.

Thank you all for the support and comments all these years! It's been a while since I've checked out this video and honestly surprised at the 68k+ views. I wasn't expecting it to surpass a few thousand but glad to see many of you seem to see where my inspiration and ideas came from in this video lol. Safe to say, a lot of the modeling and texturing (especially the road and environment in general) has me embarrassed when I look at it now compared to the work I do now in the animation industry these days. If you're curious where I'm at now lately here's a demo reel I made 4 years ago that I've made public and it shows the meet-up point of Mt. Akina/Haruna in Gunma prefecture. I literally was modeling the scene using google street view and a screenshot of the satellite view as reference haha, it also includes some familiar-looking cars albeit with better polygon topology ;) >>> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNKKe8KVzMuUn6c.html There are other videos on my channel which feature more up-to-date work that better represents what I do these days. Unfortunately since I'm now deep into the animation industry I'm not able to find time to create anymore personal works like this one - this one quick project took me a good 5 months when I was just a student.

Nismo is short for Nissan Motorsport. This *is* a Nissan. But the similarities are there. They even use Heartbeat when the 86 passes. If only they had Back On The Rocks playing.

That's not a misfiring system, a lot of cars spit flames when downshifting, it's something about the air and gas mixing together.

When you want to do a normal Sunday drive on a touge and an AE86 appears right behind you. What's even sadder than getting schooled by a lower powered car is scratching a really expensive R34 Z-Tune.

It must be wild seeing other animators make Initial D style 3D animations nowadays. The more modern animations are neat but they have a habit of just retreading old ground for views, this video stands out for having a more original concept. Helps make it such a great vid, even 10 years later. The animation is still top notch.

This is the BEST Initial D inspired video (other than Initial D itself) i've ever seen its like you combined so many different parts of episodes from each of the stages mainly the race with nakazato and created this almost rematch type race with takumi and nakazato (probably cos his r32 lost to an r34 giving him PTSD again and leading him to buy the car he lost to lol) he abuses the brakes and tires and understeers into the guardrail bakazato never learned lol anyway awesome video you deserve way more recognition for this :D

This is way better. However, first stage CGI is pretty shoddy, given that it was made back in the 90s. 4th stage and beyond is much more comparable.

Stupendo, bel video. Il Blink Attak di Takumi dura non di più di dieci secondi, e lo fa qualche istante prima di sferrare l'attacco, giusto per disorientare l'avversario. La Skyline GT-R34 è molto potente nei confronti del 4A-GE della Corolla, quindi sul rettilineo vedo poco probabile il sorpasso, io avrei usato il blink attak prima del tornante e affiancato alla GT-R34 che si allarga in curva a causa della pesantezza dell'anteriore e superarlo.

Wilson Wijaya pretty sure it was Blender. I believe there’s this car rig you can buy that you can put on vehicles, where you draw a path and it realistically controls it for you. Also has drift control and suspension options.

The only way the 86 would be able to keep up is if was gutter riding the whole race , just like in the evo 4 race , but unlike the evo 4 race , the 86 would need to use stage 2 gutter ride , meant for faster acceleration and conserving speed , the Z-tune is far from a normal GTR , it has both the straight line speed and its also an incredible cornering machine , the 86 wont have a chance unless it follows these circumstances It is likely the 86's engine will suffer due to the very aggressive gutter driving , so to fix that we install the group A engine from second stage

i love the effort and the animation as for as this video goes, only thing i noticed was the GTR-Z pulled away too quickly between hairpins and the fact no matter what skill takumi or this 86 driver has the Z-tune should walk the 86 very easily unless the driver is mister S15 track guy from the anime/manga that's only excuse that would make sense to me.
