TEACHER DEMO. This song is on p. 18 of Jazz, Rags & Blues Book 1. It was composed by Martha Mier who has created a very fun collection for students of accessible music in this genre. I like to play the final C in the left hand an octave lower than written.

So - I finally learned this one ("Downright Happy Rag"). But, then I look at your hand movements and fingerings and say, "Why can't I play that easily?" Good job 92PianoKeys. You are terrific. Thanks.

Congratulations! Ragtime is a challenging genre but well worth the effort. There is much to be gained from the time spent practicing this style of music. Especially great for the left hand jumping around and the rhythmic syncopation. I've probably been at it a few more years than you. That comfort level comes in time. Norma

I struggled for nearly two months to finally get this song playable. By then I'd gotten the hang of A Neat Beat easily, but this song kept tripping me up. It's an amazing song if you can get it right but it was the song in the book that I struggled with the most. Two months on, I still get some things not to flow well, but by now I've realised it's better if I learn a few other things before going back to this since I might just need some more comfort with skills I'm lacking at this point. Yours is the only version of this song on YT that is played on a regular piano and played in a more 'normal' and less 'fancy/showoff' style, which definitely helped me understand the song better.

I'm so glad that you found the more "straight-forward" video helpful as you were learning this piece. That was one of my main goals with our channel was to provide students with a more accurate rendition of a song to help them decipher the musical notation and give them an idea of what it was supposed to sound like. Our channel is more education oriented than entertainment oriented. There are plenty of AMAZING pianists on You Tube that blow our minds with their astonishing skill and ability to make playing the piano an Olympic event but that just isn't a reality for most of us in our piano journey. But we can still gain all of the benefits of making our own music even though it is on a much simpler scale. Keep up the good work!! --Norma

I agree with you that they are not in exact order of difficulty. Sometimes I teach them in a slightly different order depending on the student. And sometimes certain students just find certain songs easier to learn than others depending on their skill set. NM
