Now we need a prequel of Violet's past more than ever!! it was enough drama with the Russian trip in 1874 and now this!...Perhaps it could go like Violet narrating her life to Mary before dying that way Maggie Smith can reprise her role and can give us those strong one-liners!

Sometimes what siblings need in order to get along is distance apart. With her living with Bertie, it gives them both space to do what they like without having the other constantly watching like a vulture.

I think they truly became “closer” at the end of the last season.. you can also see their relationship blossom even more in the first Downton movie.
@Celisar1
@Celisar1 2 жыл бұрын
@@finderinskaie I cannot concur. In the last season Mary was brutal to Edith. Nevertheless due to the distance between the sisters and Edith’s new social position Edith had the chance for personal growth and development so that she is no longer vulnerable to being bullied which balanced their relationship.

@@Celisar1 I partly disagree. Edith had good reason to be livid with Mary, but did show up for Mary's wedding to Henry at the very last minute and I think (if I remember correctly) this is where Edith tells Mary that one day, they will be the only ones to remember Downton and everyone who lived there, and that that is more important than all of their sisterly issues. Yes, Mary was brutal to Edith, like she always was, but eventually, she did bring Bertie and Edith back together, with the help of Rosamond. Besides, Edith was often equally brutal to Mary. They were always fighting, being sarcastic and mean to each other all the time and sabotaging each other's lives, from the very beginning. Of course they were also manipulated by O'Brien, the first ladies' maid to Lady Crawley, but they both really didn't need that much encouragement. I also think that Edith's real personal growth and development happened when she was editor of her magazine. I think she even talks about being bored in her new life in the 1st movie but I can't remember exactly. Distance and the both of them being happy in their own lives probably díd make it a lot easier for them to get along.

@@deborahd6142 Well Matthew Goode is a movie star now. I doubt they can pay him to be part of an ensemble cast what he gets for starring roles. He will pick a starring role over nostalgia for DA fans. However, I think it would be interesting if Mary got divorced. Lady Catherine of Highclere Castle, the current earl's grandmother, got a divorce in the 1930's. So, it was done.

A nice lady at the local library here in Las Vegas put this on reserve for me and I just finished watching it for the second time this afternoon. She's never watched any of Downton but says she's going to start soon. I emailed her this morning telling her to please start from the very beginning of Downton Abbey with the first season, first episode, as she would not be familiar with the characters. I told her that Downton Abbey, A New Era, begins with Tom's wedding. If she'd never watched any of Downton, she'd not know him and his connection to the Crawley family. I felt like the characters have become people in my life, not fictional characters. There are no superlatives in my vocabulary to describe how I feel about this movie and all the Downton franchise. The sets were so elaborate and well done. I can't imagine how much the customs cost for just the funeral possession near the end of the movie where everyone was outside. Julian Fellows is certainly a remarkable talent. If this is the end, I'll miss them all.

Has anyone done the math on Lord Grantham's age? A New Era is portrait in 1930's correct? Being born in 1865 at the turn of the century that would make him 35, then add another 30 years and he would be 65 in 1930. If the show is mid thirties then the would be pushing 70. He doesn't seem like his character is that old. Any comments?

I believe that The Dowager was pregnant by the the man who gave her the villa. Robert and the English would be devastated to learn the truth so The Dowager lied to protect Roberts feelings/ego. Robert doesn't look like the sister (his words) and The Dowager doesn't really treat her the same. Its so sad (my opinion) how the English treat Love as a contract/agreement. Opting to have Money / Power over True Love and Happiness. Yes, The Dowager lived a wonderful life but void of True Happiness with a partner that felt equal.

You're referring to an episode in season 1 actually. The Charming Charlies. Carson and Mr. Greg were partners in a dance act on the stage. Unfortunately, Mr. Greg couldn't keep his hand out of the honey pot and the two parted company for that and other reasons. Mr. Greg showed up again in Season 4, wanting to heal old wounds. He was brought out of a workhouse and put up residence with Mrs. Crawley (Isobel). The idea was to bring her out of the shadow of her only son's Matthew's death. It was after Carson left the stage that he came to work at Downton Abbey as a Junior Footman when Lady Grantham (Violet) was a young wife and mother.

Carson always blamed Gregg for what happened with his relationship with Lucy (I think that was her name. I know she and her sister had an act called the Lark and the Dove.) After all is said and done, Carson has been employed at Downton Abbey for at least 4-decades, if not longer.

Bertie has an even bigger state than Downton (technically, Edith outranks all the other Crawleys) and direct connections with the Royal Family. He's by far the richest/most powerful of the main characters, basically. And considering that Marigold is openly calling Edith "mummy" now, it's likely that they have officially adopted her; in any case, it's unlikely Marigold isn't already in Bertie's will and Violet would certainly know about it.
