Dan Stevens could have very well finished filming Downton Abbey and still take on the other roles. One thing doesn't exclude the other. E g. The series Downton Abbey stopped filming in 2015 and Beauty and Beast was filmed in 2017, also whatever roles he played in 2022 wouldn't have interfered. I think him as well as the actress who played Sybil were a bit impatient to take on other roles and made a foolish mistake by quitting Downton Abbey.

I continued watching the show after Mathew's death. I think the makers did a great job in everyone's character development and worked in Dan's exit in the story beautifully. I wish he had stayed in for one more season so we could say a proper goodbye but apparently it would have taken up a lot of commitment and he understandably wanted to move on. Just finished another Downton Abbey marathon and the last movie as well (New era). Cried hard at the final scene with the Dowager's potrait looking in at her legacy/progeny. Beautifull. Now I wanna watch older Maggie Smith works.

@@pratikkulkarni407Season 4 is definitely a notch down from Seasons 1-3 despite a seemingly higher production value BUT there are many highlights, from the introduction of Rose as Sybil’s “replacement” (tho she’s totally different from Sybil) to Mary & Isobel and their grief in the wake of tragedy. it’s very destabilizing but in a way that feels appropriate, as numerous characters’ lives were altered forever by Matthew’s death. there are some plotlines that start to feel quite soapy but it is always coated in high-quality Downton varnish. Season 5 is definitely an improvement on Season 4 save one storyline (I think most ppl will know what that is lol) and Season 6 is like Downton back in business. the finale is just wonderful. and the movies, especially the first film, are highly enjoyable. the ending of the second film is shattering and perfect. i don’t think you’ll regret watching the rest at all

I wonder how they would have extended the story. Matthew died having created an heir to Downton. He had worked on improving the estate so it didn't go the way others had - and gone bankrupt. What else could he have done? When Mary remarried, there wasn't much of a life for the second husband and he had to create a car business with Tom. Matthew would have been all but standing around making decisions with Robert until Robert's death.

@monique8641 Maybe they would have delayed the birth of an heir that might cause problem in their relationship….. or maybe either of them might need to travel and the separation might cause another kind of problem when one of them will be seduced to having an affair….. or maybe Downton will fall into some sort of disaster that would challenge their marriage …… Whatever it might be, Lord Fellows I‘m sure would have created an enduring & interesting plot for these two favorite characters of mine….🥰

For all who say that Dan Stephens made a mistake by leaving, who else from the cast has had a widely successful career outside from the series/films? Maybe Hugh Bonneville? I’ve seen him in one film I believe. But no one has fared much better than Dan has I think. He did what was right for him and when I think of him I know exactly who he is as an actor, and I don’t necessarily think about Downtown Abbey first.

Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern (as two examples) have plenty of acting roles under their belts. Guessing you'd never heard of Dame Maggie Smith or Dame Penelope Wilton before? I can't speak for all of the characters, but I did see plenty of them in earlier years in Midsomer Murders.

@@monique8641 Dame Maggie Smith is probably one of my favorite British actresses and I have been watching her in films since the 90’s (The Secret Garden/Sister Act) However, her career was established before Downtown Abbey, in fact she carried the film in my opinion. I’m in Jamaica, which matters because while I’d never heard of Elizabeth McGovern or Hugh Bonneville before DA, I do know who they are now but for me they’re totally associated to the film - ie not famous enough to have the same international impact at Smith. Now, I was replying to comments that Dan Stephen’s’ career hasn’t blown up since he left the film (suggesting that he should have stayed) and I’m saying that I haven’t seen where the other actors have fared any better. If someone blinked and never watched Downton Abbey, they probably would never have heard of any of the other actors, Smith excepted, while Stephens has since been in a few films where he might be remembered on this side of the world. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Update: Never heard of Dame Penelope Wilton before Downton Abbey, in-fact I had to google her to know who you were referring to!

You didn't mention another film he did after quitting DA - Charles' Dickens, the one who wrote A Christmas Carol, I think it was one of his best because that character didn't require him to look handsome, and he did a great job. I also enjoy his character in the TV series Sense & Sensibility. I think he is a versatile actor, and I respect his personal choice. But I think this channel should stop using click bait headline like that. You fooled me.

I was shocked and sad when Matthew Crowley died but the character was too white bread and one dimensional for a talent like Dan Steven’s.
