Matthew’s death is the most tragic moment in television history.

Toss-up between that and Sybil's death. Cried my eyes out both times.

Hated the way the writer made it so trivial by leaving it at the very end of the season and then it was 6 months later in the next season! The drama should have been everyone finding out and seeing their reactions!

@@dianagebczyk6637 I agree that both were tragic but the reason I believe Mattew's was more tragic because they spent so little time on his death. Sybil had an entire arc, we saw the initial reactions of the other characters and it was treated like a real loss to the Crawley family. Matthew was simply forgotten. We saw so little of the aftermath and in the end, it felt like he never even mattered. That is why I personally feel his death was more tragic.

@@benwanada I couldn't agree more. The two deaths were treated demonstrably differently. Sybil's death was tragically played out, which in my opinion was excellent drama. There was the moving scenes of the entire family/servants united in grief. Robert and Cora were at each others throats, with a very touching reconciliation at the end of the next episode. Contrast that to Matthew's death, we saw him squashed under his car. Nine months later in series 4 Ep1, Mary is inconsolable in her widow's weeds, while the vast majority of the household wishes she would snap out of it. After all he was only the heir, only that. Unlike Sybil, from this juncture he's hardly mentioned again. Later on in the story, Downton's future is again looking tenuous, Cora asks the question; what would Sybil do? Never mind Matthew, whose business acumen and inheritance had saved them from selling Downton. Farcical! I don't think Fellowes knew what to do with Mary. All he did was throw men at her, where these men came from after the Butcher's yard of WW1, is anyone's guess. I thought this approach cheapened the Mary character. I did however watch the programme to its conclusion, not however with the same affection, I once had.
