Thanks for sharing. I was happy to see the corner of Granville & Pender. I worked at the Scotiabank there. Many fond memories of that area of downtown

Thanks for posting Stu. One of the best times of my life was when I first came to this amazing land in 1979. Every sunday my friends and I would just chill on Granville st. and Robson Square after partying the night before. We’d have lunch at McDonalds on Smithe and go to kits beach to play basketball. Thanks for that great memory Vancouver

Hey! l lived 2 minutes away from Lost Lagoon in '88 for 4 years! l did my runs around it, and my _Beautiful_ Bachelor apt, at ''Stanley Park Manor'' was only 425.00 a MONTH! Anybody could afford an apartment EVEN if you were on welfare!! The city is STILL really clean! Just astronomically expensive!

I was in Pendrell St in ‘88 and you’re right - yeah rents were $400-500. As I was saying the other day to someone, most had their own apartment no matter what their income or job.

@@LoganLavery ~ l feel terrible for this generation! Where can _they_ go? lf you're blessed, you are able to have a nice place with BC housing. But now...anyone can refuse you in those apartments for ANY reason. Even if you have THOUSANDS in the bank. And if you're a conservative, or a Christian, or they think you're ideology doesnt line up with theirs ....TOO BAD! :( Terrible!

@Christopher Meisner Ya and now it’s congestion , dead zones where no one lives due to absentee owners, unaffordable housing., horrendous traffic problems , and of coarse let’s not forget the crime problem. I’d take 1979 any day , born and raised here.
@michaelkennedy4444

@Christopher Meisner A resource based economy is basically all of Canada , bringing up the VSE and the boiler room operations have nothing to do with the gist of what this topic was about . Dead zones , how about coal harbor area and the big towers with empty suites owned by offshore speculators. On the crime topic , are you kidding ???? Today , violent assaults are much more common in the downtown east side, as well as gangster shootings , the drug use is through the roof due to lax laws implemented by SJW politicians , I could go,on and on but I’ve got more important things to do then to argue with someone who probably wasn’t even around back then and is a transplant from Toronto or somewhere back east.

I remember when we were kids, in the "very back" of my dads' '62 Valiant wagon...passing Granville Square... we would point and say..."LOOK DAD!...THE "WAFFLE" BUILDING!"...of course...there were plenty of other buildings in Van that looked like they were made w/a giant waffle iron!...and...the Geo Science Bldg?...was...at the time, Vancouver's only 'earthquake proof' structure! Also, ever Sat afternoon...if we did GOOD ENOUGH at our piano lessons (in the morning)...my dad would take us to the Pacific Coliseum to watch the Canucks practice if they had a home game that night! This was more like 1970/71.

I was going to try that but it would be hard to get into some places now. In 1979 you could just walk into any hotel and take a tour. It's not that easy nowadays. I'd probably have to make an appointment with the concierge at the Four Seasons Hotel Or stay there for the night **lol** .

this must be shortly before Robson Square turned white and blue with Whitecaps fans ahaha i seen some archival footage of that parade probably from cbc when it was still up on youtube and just the amount of people always blew my mind (overhead shots were unreal!) they say probably about 100,000 ppl showed up for the parade and it definitely looked like it ahaha maybe even more, unfortunately i bet cbc took it down over copyright issues or something

I find it unfortunate that people who obviously never spent time in another city feel compelled to give there negative, toxic opinion of a Vancouver that I don’t recognize from their description. An overpriced dump....yes, it’s expensive, and why....because everyone wants to live here.....I guess dumps are where everyone wants to live.
