At one time Porthcawl could be reached by road, rail, sea and air. The post-war years saw the end of the local aviation and the closure of the railway into the town, while road traffic has increased considerably; but channel steamers still call at the harbour.
Amidst Porthcawl of the present day, evidence of its history abounds, particularly in the nearby villages of Nottage and Newton. Many relics of the past are still a visible part of the present - quiest country lanes, village streets, dockside buildings; whilst others, such as the old windmills, are less easily found.
The past and present are inextricably linked by the institutions that have served Porthcawl for generations; places of worhship, sporting clubs, the fairground, the annual carnival. As the world changes, there is much that remains relatively unchanged.

I used to live in Porthcawl, and remember what we used to call 'The miner's Fortnight', when the train used to puff into town and disgorge happy holiday makers...it was a great time, with great memories.

My parents used to take me to Porthcawl by train, the last time was the Saturday just before the line was shut- 120 trains used that line on the last day Six trains came from Birmingham also some from Bristol You couldn't move. The way out from the station was via a little road which came onto John Street - Woolworths was in the corner. Spent lots of great holidays there - even caught the Cardiff Queen Paddle Steamer to Ilfracombe from the breakwater many times. Porthcawl is now only a shadow of what it used to be. Treco bay was know as Costa El Treco by us valley people also know as Butty Bay as very often when you spent the miners fortnight there your next door neighbour often stayed in the caravan next door to your own

We went on the last Saturday the line was open and 150 trains pulled that day for all over the place even Birmingham. The place was packed you couldn`t move We once caught the Cardiff Queen paddle steamer to Ilfracombe in a thunder storm that was a trip never to forget talk about people being seasick lolol
