I have said "I LOVE your DP/30 series of interviews" and will repeat it here. LOVE them all! Please take this as a positive suggestion: the idea of having the reflection of your head next to both Jessica and Idris has to be one of the worst interviewer's idea ever. :) Definitely a lesson of what not to do for me. :) Back to the interviews with Jessica and Idris, they are as insightful as always. These DP/30 interviews are "must watch" for serious filmmakers (and film lovers). Keep up the good work!

About the Matthew Newton issue: My theory is that she was aware of his abusive past (I mean, how can a producer be that oblivious in this day and age?) yet somehow bought into his reformed, male feminist act. However, considering her whole image as well as the current climate, she strangely underestimated the potential backlash.

This was great until - inevitably - she got to Sorkin. I’m fine with her admiration of his work, but given his history as both a writer and person who has no respect for women, he hasn’t merited her as a campion.
@neil58196 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting, and a bit hypocritical when she says she wants the directors she loves to expand their "pocket" so as not to limit their artistry, when, at the same time, her "pocket" is quite small as well. When was the last time I saw Jessica do a slapstick comedy movie? Or a family kid movie? Or anything that wasn't a dramatic role?
@neil58196 жыл бұрын
Johanna90 Then I’m confused (which happens a lot 😬) because I thought that was the entire basis of what that “pocket” comment meant. I thought they were talking about taste. Spielberg’s taste, or “pocket”, happens to be in the action sci-fi realm, and Scorsese’s pocket is in drama. And so I thought those directors tend to stay within those environments because that’s where they’re more comfortable. Just as I’m sure Jessica is more comfortable doing roles that would project her as a serious actor, which she is. And don’t get me wrong, I admire her work a great deal. She’s been in a handful of films that I love that’s solely because of her performance. But I would think, if you want to be challenged as an actor, or in any profession for that matter, it might be a good idea to take on roles that are outside of your comfort zone, like a slapstick comedy or some other role completely different than what you’ve been consistently doing. Anyway, sorry for the long ramble. Maybe I missed something in the dialogue, and for that I apologize.
@neil58196 жыл бұрын
Well you're certainly correct there. Good comedies ARE very hard to come by. And you're right, her performance in The Help was quite comedic, and I actually really loved that film. However that film wasn't considered a comedic film. And even though she was the comic relief, the role didn't seem too out of the box for her to say "yeah, this is definitely something very different from what I've done". But getting back to my point, I guess what I'm trying to get at is, I feel the reasons Jessica doesn't choose to do pure comedy films are the very same reasons the directors she loves does not: just as you said "It's tough, especially when comedy is not your "typical" style of genre". And that's ok! If Jessica is not comfortable in pure comedy roles, or a family kids movie, or a tv sitcom, whatever it may be, then I wouldn't want her to. But I think that also applies to the directors as well. We all have our own tastes, and that's ok. And, on a somewhat related subject, have you seen the trailer for Game Night? It looks hilarious, and one of the main characters is Rachel McAdams, who I think is a very versatile actor, and she just looks very funny and authentic in this film, albeit from a trailer. I would love love love to see Jessica do a film like this, just as she would like to see more directors get out of their comfort zone.
@MrZeB145 жыл бұрын
You're talking about two very different things, though. When she says more filmmakers should expand their "pocket", she means they should consider telling stories about different demographics so as to allow for a greater variety of stories and perspectives. When A-list directors only make films about people who look exactly like them and are from the same background, that limits the opportunities for minority artists and prevents minority audiences from seeing themselves represented on screen. She's talking about expanding pockets in a way that has a direct effect on how we produce and consume content as a society, and on whose voices get to be heard; making more comedies or more family films doesn't have that kind of real-life impact, and is a completely different topic. But to answer your question: Chastain is producing a comedy film that she'll star in with Octavia Spencer. She came up with the story, she pitched it to Universal, she hired a writer and a director, and she'll fund it through her own production company. She's also developing an spy action adventure that she'll act in with Marion Cotillard, Lupita Nyong'o and Penelope Cruz. She asked all of them to be her co-stars, hired a writer and pitched it to studios to kickstart a James Bond-type franchise. And she's also producing an action movie called Eve, which is filming right now. So there you go, she's expanding her pocket and actively getting versatile projects off the ground through her own production company.

@ione976 жыл бұрын
quentin Tarantino is brave?? He knowingly protected a rapist at the expense of women's lives and careers. he's not brave, he just got caught. and don't place the burden on actresses to leave their agents, they're under contract and are desperate to find jobs in the industry to support themselves and realize their dreams, all while dealing with the trauma of daily sexism and sexual assault. That's victim blaming. Found many of your comments on this topic disgusting, I'm shocked you would open your mouth and say those things to such a talented and respected actress.
@dp306 жыл бұрын
To be clear, I didn't say that Quentin was brave, full stop. There was context and you've removed it from that context. As for agents, they need to do the job the way it needs to be done. Are you suggesting that an actress should accept being represented as less valuable by their professional representative? Your "disgust" is why people are afraid to discuss these issues. There needs to be a safe space for the conversation and all opinions. I respect Jessica enormously. This was not our first discussion on these issues. And my work is to create the space for her to be free to speak. I think she did that quite forcefully, smartly, and clearly.
@romas19956 жыл бұрын
You think Meryl Streep didn't know ? ha! then you are a moron! All of them knew! Men and women. Tarantino had the decency to admit he knew some things but not all. Much braver than lying to everybody. This automatic vilification of all men just because they are men will not solve anything.
@ione976 жыл бұрын
Oh no, I've got the context. You said he was brave for his confession of knowing the extent of Weinstein's actions...decades later when his career would no longer suffer because of it. Over 50 women came out with allegations, and there are probably 100 more. How many souls could have been spared had he been "brave" when the time called for it. Also, why does the burden only fall on actresses to risk their career (and even their lives)? Why is not expected for an agent to behave professionally and morally? That question reminds me of situations involving domestic violence, where people continue to ask "Why didn't you just leave?", rather than "why is violence perpetrated by men such a widespread epidemic in this society? What overall systems allow this to continue? How have I been complicit in this and what can I do to help abolish these abuses?" Condemning women for "just talking" without "doing something" - CALLING OUT YOUR ABUSER IS DOING SOMETHING. Something incredibly scary and powerful at that. My point is, based on YOUR COMMENTARY, you're questioning the victims and not the systems. If you wanna take it there and talk social justice in your interviews and spout your controversial opinions, you will get backlash from people who know a lot more than you. Safe space my ass, you constantly interrupted her with your mansplaining and it was clear you weren't listening to her responses, instead waiting for a pause to insert your own opinion. No i will not create a "safe space" for someone who wants to defend rape apologist and exclusive filmmaking.

Im sorry but I work in a very high powered, ever-changing industry, but I don't see any of this, and Im not naive, young or impressionable. I am rather clinical actually. No one is told how to dress or do sexual favours. Id be the first to barge in.. Are we just trying to fit the problem around each industry or searching for the problem that doesnt exist, because we don't want to be left out? Its not the same and recently it feels we have the problem, be it harassment, sexism etc and we are trying to find these in conversations and interactions in our workplace. Oh so and so said something, call HR.... if it doesnt exist let it be. Im a woman and would love to have this fight, but 'un'fortunately its non-existent in advertising where I work. Id hate to be a man these days and its starting to become a which hunt. Id also add that those women who came forward 20 years later have contributed to this going on for so long.I'd be ashamed if due to my lack of actions, 20 years worth of women got raped, harassed and damaged. They are not victims. How often real victims get offered jobs, careers, money or Oscars when snatched on the streets?
