He gives a powerful, pained performance as Vincent Van Gogh in the latest film from artist/director Julian Schnabel, At Eternity's Gate. Dafoe talks with David Poland about the film and a career as an actor.

Defoe is one of the few Renaissance actors left in this business and we should be fortunate to experience his great talent

absolutely. I just saw the movie last night and the creases in his face alone with the camera angles were magic. not many actors can take me away honestly to that period with thinking I'm watching an actor. cheers.

I love when repeat interview guests are falling in love with DP/30 process. To see them riff with joy about their approaches to acting/storytelling/life (because they are freed from constraints of junket talk or audience q&a) it is a wonderful sight to see.

To say that Willem Dafoe is a magnificent actor, is putting it mildly. Love every single thing he’s in..Infinity’s Gate was perfect in every way. His acting in Lighthouse is perfect.

i really loved this movie. It really captured how it feels to be in that space that they label as manic depressive through the camera work. it was really cool to experience that. and how from that space the light and vision and time and intensity and things like cutting ears off have a different lens on them. it was really an amazing thing, because i don't think or can't think of another film that did that so realistically. really cool. and of course, who else could do that role.

Great interview, as usual. Thanks for that. What I like about your interviews is that it doesn't really matter if you have seen the movie in question or not. It's not really about that but a bigger discussion, and smaller at the same time. I liked the moment at 32:20 when you both get insights. "Life happens in his rooms".

I love this depiction because it displays his life as day to day in some aspects. It gets you much closer to reality. The mystical stuff of previous analysis is rightly played down some. It was a part. But not the only part. Because he lived a life. That was previously downplayed In order to focus on the magic. Magic and the ordinary make the true life lived.
