First off, the song in this review absolutely jams! I couldn’t help but bob my head, and I’d love to hear the whole thing at some point. Second, I discovered your channel with the Neve 88M video, and quickly binged almost all your other content. Alec, you are doing fantastic work; I really appreciate all your incredibly thoughtful and thorough reviews and tutorials. I wish you a massive success on here; you deserve it.

The only problem with DPA mics is that you can’t unhear them. I’ve been bringing my pair of 4011’s to sessions and they always astonish. I’m so happy to see a pop producer who understands that the value of capturing the actual sounds being made. Thanks Alec !

As a longtime DPA microphone fan, I've used nearly every microphone in that kit and I have a good selection of their 4000-series mics in my personal locker. That said, the only time I've EVER seen so many of those mics in one place was at DPA's North American distribution center. Good heavens! That is something like $40k worth of mics in one suitcase. DPA will assemble pretty much any mic kit one can dream up, but I wonder: Have they ever sold one like that, or did you borrow a one-of-a-kind demo set? Before you give it back, you really need to try a pair of those 4000 mics with an upscale preamp like a Millennia HV-3x. You'll never forget it.
@alecbrits
@alecbrits 2 жыл бұрын
It’s a crazy set of mics! Yeah I’m not sure what the full value is of the case but it’s insane. Sadly they have already left the building here, but I can imagine pairing it with a Neumann or Millenia mic pre would be blissful.

As usual the song is absolutely banging. The writing on this one really evokes Sting and the production has shades of Steely Dan, maybe? I think it's the clarity of the drums. This is definitely the best-sounding production of yours that I have heard.

Talk about the 4099s for recording in a bad room! I think it could be a nice content for the majority (or at least a lot) of your viewers. That's my reality, and I think that a lot of guys and gals that have home studios are trying make things happen' in a not perfectly treated room. That's my 2 cents! Me, I got myself a DPA 2028 for live vocals, and just grabbed myself (not here yet... but it will be with me next week) a DPS 4099 for my acoustic guitar. I hope they are a good match together for a simple and more direct recording for a bad room recording and live usage.

hello Alec. thanks a lot for another great review , I love the music you play in your videos and your playing. . I was looking forward to watch you use DPA Defacto handheld Condenser MIc on vocals and Guitar with the two different capsules : The 4018 V with boosted highs and the Neutral / linear 4018 VL . They maybe could cover more ground than a normal boostet vocal mic. ? so pleeeease 🙂

Question: I bought a used 4099 lackig the microdot to XLR adapter and bought a third party "no voltage" adapter on ebay for about 10% the cost of DPA's. Will this successfully power the mic when I apply phantom externally?? THANKS!

do you recommend 4011 or 4015 for singing or spoken word? i'm also a bit confused about their preamp requirements: do they come with their own preamp, so all that's left is to connect them to an interface, or do they still require to be plugged into a preamp?
@alecbrits
@alecbrits 2 жыл бұрын
I would likely lean towards a larger diaphragm mic for vocal related stuff, but if I had to pick out of those two, the 4011 MMP-A would be the one. The mic’s still need pre amps to work. :) hope this helps.

sontronics dm-1b is a way better bass drum mic than dpa 4055. sontronics dm-1b is tighter , more open sound and realistic than dpa 4055.sontronics dm-1b captures the whole sound of the bass drum! check this comparison kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erpmqLqg2J_HnI0.html

I think it largely depends on what you are looking for in a kick drum microphone. :) if the Sontronics does what you are looking for, then it’s right for you. Hard to say one thing is better then another.
