It’s good to see this video. I just run old school now td42 had 2 newer dpf and common rail cars both blew up around 180 thousand (ranger, navara) always serviced etc at 5000kms still didn’t handle things. Back to the old td 300 thousand and going strong. Think in new vehicle petrol is the go over the diesel common rail worse luck. Great videos good build. Was fencing with a bloke had a dual cab cruiser and it was doing a burn as we fenced was not just the dpf out the back of the exhaust while it sat high idled and did it’s burn caught the leaves on fire.

If we're making the point about illegal modifications, the Hilux as modified was illegal in Western Australia and if it was running 285 70 17 (you mentioned 33s) then it's also illegal in all states. Western Australia has a lmit on vehicle lifts of 50mm, so you can't do a 2 inch lift and run anything except stock tyre size. But a 285 70 17 is also an illegal tyres tyres for most 4wds as they are 56mm over stock size and the lmit in all states is 50mm. The Hilux is also running an illegal amount of spot lights. In Western Australia the limit is 4 and the Hilux was running 8. So these mods make the Hilux illegal and unroadworthy. Going forward, you should both remove these videos talking about illegal mods as there's too much misinformation and contradiction.

The difference is stating the fact to check for legality’s and not suggesting it’s a great thing without pointing that out. Also I made a follow up video saying that 33’s were not great for many reasons, maybe you missed that one. Also treps are not legal but they are okay tyres not my driving tyres. Thought I’d point that out before you reply with that one
@thang55
@thang55 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ronny_Dahl I did see the the HILUX MODIFICATION REGRETS video but there's no mention of legality, only fuel usage, rolling resistance and low range performance. Look, everyone does it, the same with cars over GVM and tow rigs over GCM. I'm just saying I wouldn't make a video talking about illegal mods as it just raises the profile of the entire 4wd community with the authorities. Just because a mod is illegal doesn't make it unsafe. A 75mm lift is legal in QLD, NSW and Vic, so either they are all wrong (even though VSB14 of the ADRs states it's legal) or WA is over governed. A GCM upgrade pre rego is legal in WA but the same car and suspension fitted post rego is illegal - same car and mods but the red tape separates them. Maybe what's needed here is a video covering all the rules and regs so youtube viewers have a better understanding of what they can and can not do.

Hi Ronny, very good info I have dealt with these regs for 43 years. People thought i was being picky however when you have an expensive vehicle and you have it modified so that it is no longer safe or legal and then you find the insurers will not pay when something happens, may not be your fault, don’t blame someone else for what you have done to your vehicle. Love your channel Ronny. Bravo from Victoria Australia

I work on commercial and Agricultural vehicles and i'll be honest. DPF's play up so much, either the re-gen faults or the DPF just gets blocked and plugged. They are a real pain and the worst thing is they are expensive AF. I can see why some remove them because it's one less headache. Yea i know emissions is important.. but i feel like things have too many components that fail nowadays that vehicles have become throw away items.

Agreed. It's interesting that the self righteous approach is thou mustn't do this it's evil, but in the next breath all cop to owning a pre-16 vehicle so they don't have one fitted! Their veh emits the same crap but they sleep better believing they're not part of a problem if you buy into the climate/ air quality argument. By all means I'm onside with informing those that don't know they're breaking the law but if there are people chopping bits off their stock vehicle without giving that a thought, they probably shouldn't be driving 😁

Also add in there: DPFs often aren't well designed for city driving. DPFs can clog up, put your vehicle into limp mode and require replacement from as little as 80,000km in the case of the car I had. Are very expensive to replace. Over $2,000 every 3 years is absolutely BS. Required to use additional fuel to create that burn cycle. Required in some vehicles to "have to" go for a minimum 30 minute drive a week at 100km or so for it to do it's burn cycle, and if that's not in your needed routine, then that's a lot of carbon. The system is stupid. But that's it

I just want to say this, Matter can change form through physical and chemical changes, but through any of these changes matter is conserved. The same amount of matter exists before and after the change-none is created or destroyed. Meaning the soot inside the DPF doesn't just disappear during regeneration, it changes form from soot particles into ash particles.. This ash is also a lot lighter than soot meaning it'll travel further than soot once airborne. What are the most harmful airborne particles? UFPs are the most dangerous particulate matter because their tiny size makes them extremely inhalable. They are less than 0.1 microns in diameter and make up roughly 90% of all airborne particles. Now which is worse? Soot you can see or ash that you can't? Just because you can't see microwaves, ultraviolet waves doesn't mean they aren't harmful..

Figure it would be prudent of me to add that fines and unroadworthy also apply to the removal of any emission systems (ie cat converters) and can lend you in the same situation. Also the Toyota issues around the dpf seem mainly centred around it being a new system, we’ve had the systems on euro cars for 15+ years now and some brands struggle with issues in the early days but very rare to have major issues with them these days.

I'd be very careful about insurance. Even if it DOES say that it'll cover vehicles with a DPF-delete there's probably some other caveat (such as, perhaps, requiring that a vehicle adheres to all current construction & use laws) which they could use to avoid liability.

If you tune a dpf vehicle you need to know what you do, you need a very clean and good tune similar to the stock programming in terms of soot output which is more complicated. So it's just laziness. If you watch at it with international travel in mind it gets a bit different. Dpf and egr systems require the highest fuel quality and lowest Sulphur in the fuel which is not available everywhere at every time. For us it's illegal and there is no way around keeping dpf and egr, we just have to deal with it.

Our Utes does not have DPFs, nor are we forced to comply with emmision regulations. We benefit from removing the EGR cooler + deCat with a prolonged engine and turbo life.

Maybe in the off-roading world the main reason to remove the DPF is for a V8 sound but for the rest of us sound is the least important reason. The most important reason is not having something that could potentially go wrong at anytime and then having an expensive fix or to have a DPF clean. 2nd reason I would say is to let the engine breath easier and to gain more power. I really don't think the environmental impact of a small percentage of owners removing them is that much of a concern. There's much more of an impact from other things such as air travel, fossil fuel power stations and things such as cargo ships etc. Electric/hydrogen vehicles are gonna be main stream pretty soon so it's just totally a none issue, especially considering the small percentage of owners that do it at the moment

Hey Ronnie, great vid. I’ve had a number of sports cars and a couple of late model diesels go over the pits (vehicle inspections) over the years and have known plenty of people that have done the same for various reasons (yellow stickers, getting engineered mods etc). From my non scientific observations you can get away with a lot of mods including “illegal” wheels and lifts. But the moment you remove catalytic converters, mess with dpfs or vent anything to atmosphere (like a blow off valve or waste-gate ) it has been an instant fail (meaning the car is not roadworthy) which lines up with your message. It May be worth doing a video on the process of how to get your mods certified by an engineer and then going in for inspection and then advising your insurance etc (hey you could even do a dpf delete and see what happens). Cheers - by the way, having watched the video in question, I'm not fully convinced they deleted the DPF without replacing it - either way they could have done a better job making that clear to avoid this situation.

Although some manufacturers like jeep are trying to build an electric offroad vehicle, they are far ftom having the driving mileage equal to diesel or petrol. I cant fathom trying to do an electrical repair on a trail like the Canning Stock Route. The DPF only provides extreeme heat while it is in regen mode so it can burn off the soot it has collected. Most diesels create the most soot while at lower RPMs, and this sends the DPF into regen more often causing concern for brushfires while overlanding.Caterpillar engines here in the USA could meet the particulate matter reduction without using a DPF, but could not get the certification because the law required the engines to have a DPF. So as Ronnie stated dont be an Id10t removing any item the manufacturer had to install, you WILL get fined.

Most new diesels will only do a DPF burn off at highway speed for half an hour. Its not based on rpm and its mostly likely a safety feature built into the software so not to start grass fires.

The main problem is money and complexity. I'm not interested in removing my dpf because I change vehicles every 3-4 years. Never had any problem whatsoever with dpf/adblue. However, I can imagine how problematic it can be owning an older vehicle with dpf because it's expensive as hell to replace parts associated with it. We are beta testers for this technology. If the dpf system was bulletproof no one would care.

@@jo_clarke1960 Does that really matter when they often malfunction and clog up if not driven in a certain way? When dpf came it's lifespan was short resulting in costly replacements. In modern vehicles SCR is very often a part of DPF which makes things even worse. The latest report I read was that volvos had trouble in cold weather resulting in calling a tow truck in worst case. They then got "fixed" at the dealer but broke down again a few weeks later.

Sorry mate, but while I fully agree with the content of this video and am a big fan of your channel, this sounds like a perfect example of "someone preaching water, but drinking wine". You explicitly state that you don't want to own a car from 2016 (or later) because, amongst others, you like the V8 sound and power without DPF. Yet you make a big issue about the environmental / health consequences of doing away with the DPF in a post-2016 car. Do you honestly believe that the two pre-2016 cars you own are less polluting because you're legally allowed to run them without DPF?
