Hey! I'm not sure if I ever commented on your channel before since KZfaq deleted my account and all of my previous comments but I wanted to explain to you anyway: Ian is making a storyline based on his life dealing with bipolar disorder type I and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). Besides himself, there are three main "characters" in this storyline: Mito, Mr Insanity, and The Hybrid. His first works (1st EP and 1st full album) focused on Mito while his 2nd EP, Dear Insanity (this one), focused on Mr Insanity and that's why they're so distinct. He's going to release an EP focused on the Hybrid in a few months. He delayed it so he could make a bigger project. Here I'll only talk about Mito and Mr Insanity since they're the ones in these videos. Mito and Mr Insanity are real people who have a mind of their own called "alters" (short for alternate state of consciousness) that he coexists with. In DID, there's more than one person living in the same body with different memories, voice tone, body language, beliefs, motives, etc. However, they are still not completely separate and each one of them functions together forming what is called a “system” (how someone with DID may refer to themselves). DID stems from severe and/or repeated childhood trauma. As a coping mechanism, the mind of the child unconsciously creates a "new person" that could deal with the trauma for them otherwise it would be unbearable. That way only one or some identities will remember the trauma. Mito was that alter created by the mind to deal with any traumas and to be the one who remembers them so Ian can forget. He is depicted as a fallen angel and is represented in MVs by wearing black, with a deep voice, missing an eye, and a ring with an eyeball. The association of Mito with an eye is because the “eye” symbolism is important to Ian as a visual director and he recognizes that the best lenses in the world are the eyes. When he switches into Mito and his world flips, it’s like he loses one eye. When Ian wears the ring, it is also a coping mechanism for Ian to subdue Mito’s power and block him from taking complete control of him. The only Korean word that Ian uses in his whole discography (thus far) is ‘눈’ (in the song “Mood”) which means eye. Ian is the prominent identity, the one who stays the longest in the body (called the "host"). In very stressful situations, Ian blacks out and Mito takes control to protect him. This means Mito is “fronting”. There is also “co-fronting” meaning more than one alter in control at the same time. Ian will then come back hours, days, or weeks later (the longest has been a month) not remembering anything that was said or done. Basically, his life has been lived and he doesn't know how. Mr Insanity is the mania. Mania is a period of euphoria or high irritability, with increased drive and decreased sleep. It can lead to psychosis and exhaustion if left untreated. Psychosis is when there’s a break from reality, the person doesn’t know what is real and what’s not. They start to hallucinate (seeing something that isn’t there) or have delusions (believing something that can’t be true). Ian said that butterflies are the symbol of Mr Insanity and he's the only one that can see them. He said this is inspired by a mental health assessment test that shows "butterflies" to the patients. He was probably talking about the Rorschach test which consists of showing 10 inkblots and then the person needs to associate each card with something. Some of them look like butterflies. Ian then associated butterflies with sanity. The more butterflies you see (like Mr Insanity) the more clinically insane you are. "The Other Side" is the place where the whole story unfolds, which actually is his conciousness, where these alters exist. This album is all about how Mr Insanity came to be and his journey into “The Other Side”. Because of the mania Mr Insanity is usually chaotic and doesn't care about consequences. In the story, there's a door that Mr Insanity's chaotic self is trying to open which represents the traumas. Mito being the protector, won't let this happen since Ian isn't supposed to know anything about it. Growing up, Ian thought that everyone remembers all of their dreams until he started asking others. Lucid dreaming has always been normal for him. It is the same with sleep paralysis which he experiences about 6-7 days a week. During sleep paralysis he hears things, although he doesn't see them. However, this is not scary for him. It's just something he grew up with. In those lucid dreams there are a lot of doors. Going through the wrong door could turn the dream into a nightmare and that's what inspired the "door" analogy. Sometimes he dreams as Mito, sometimes as himself. When he dreams as Mito, it's almost like Ian is intruding on Mito's dream, like a spectator. The only way to get to “The Other Side” (his consciousness) is through lucid dreaming. *"Peanut Butter & Tears"* is the very early stages of Mr Insanity. Child Ian starts lucid dreaming and wandering through these “doors”. The first door that he enters he is met by a whole new world he never knew that existed: “The Other Side”. He tries to understand where he is until he realizes he can't leave, or he doesn't know how to get back. Essentially, the longer he stays lucid dreaming, the longer he ventures into “The Other Side”, the more he starts to lose the grip of reality. Hence why it's the birth of Mr Insanity, his manic episodes. The green asteroid seen at the beginning of the video was a huge part of his dreams when he was a child. Somewhere down in the mind, venturing through these doors, Ian/Mr Insanity comes across his youth, or memories unlocking his youth; one of them being "Peanut Butter & Jelly". However, when he comes across it this time it’s "Peanut Butter & Tears". As Ian said It’s a “sad freak show”. This song is about childhood trauma (represented here by a visit to the dentist), how it shapes you, and losing the joy in life as the years go by. As he wakes up from the dental procedure there’s glitter tears on his face, the aftermath of the trauma. But, he also said that there's still joy in life even after you’ve grown up. You just need to know where to look for it. After "Peanut Butter & Tears" there comes the journey of becoming Mr Insanity while at the same time going after the key that unlocks that specific door. Ths journey is expressed in *"Don't Go Insane"* but I won't detail it here. The next one is *"So I Danced"* . Here Mr Insanity, together with The Green (the green guy), plans a heist to steal the key for the door I mentioned earlier from the "Bank of the Other Side", which is located in Emerald City. The name is inspired by the Wizard of Oz. This was a big reference for him since childhood and he actually visited his version of the “Emerald City” in one of his dreams. The guardian/mayor of the city is Mito himself and a battle between Mito and Mr Insanity unfolds. It is unclear who won. Near the end, when we hear the line “It’s not your end of the story”, half of it is said in Ian's voice and half in Mito's voice. This could be a representation of a switch and the different voice tones between Ian and Mito. In DID different alters can have different voice tones. In real life Mito can reach an octave that Ian can't. Since these are the most storyline heavy I wanted to explain them to you here. But there are also quotes of him explaining the other songs.
