Panasonic g9 user here. Love it as a Landscape Photography. Great ergonomic body, many buttons, great weather sealing, double sd card slot, Full Hdmi port, dust, splash AND frozen proof. You can customize pretty much everything, great Menu, tons of features. Great IBIS, High Res Mode, great EVF. Furthermore, the fantastic video quality with 4k 60 and options to film in 10 Bit. The lens choice is really good, too. There are a lot of second hand lenses that you can buy really cheap. I bought the g9 second hand for 600€ here in germany, pretty much like new. Thats a real bang for the buck.

@@Keilikeramen Hi there,, The GX85 is such a great small camera it's easy to love,, But.. It's only 16MP and a bit limited in it's processing power. I know many people will tell you that the 20 MP sensor in the G9 is not that much bigger,,,and that is true,, but the great processor in the G9 is really where the magic happens. That processor is so good that Panasonic was able to send firmware updates that improved the focus and video abilities on that camera to the point that it's like having a whole new upgraded body. Try that camera and a 12-35 2.8 zoom lens and it will make a whole new experience for you....OR.. even an Olympus OMD- EM1 mkII --these are bargains right now..best of luck...

Well, I have G80 and I'm a bit worried about the fact that G9 is five years old, G80 is six years old and there are no upgrades. Well G90 ... on the other hand I have very few issues with G80, but you know ... sensor is likely from G3 or so and this one is now like 10 years old. There were certainly improvements. With both IBIS and IS it's not so huge issue for anything, but taking photos of people in low light. To me it seems that Panasonic ditched MFT for anything, but video. And I disagree that phone can replace camera. Having Zenfone8, it has 64px sensor, it has higher dynamic range due to binning, it takes pretty decent photos in good light, but ... it does not have portrait lens, it can't take good pictures in low light (although it's not complete disaster, it even has optical IS), it does not have telephoto. Real advantage is higher dynamic range and pretty good in-camera image processing which is not over the board with saturation, edge sharpening or smoothing.

Just got a Z5 with Z 24-120 f/4, can't think of a better value combo for hobbyist landscape/nature shooters! The most amazing thing is that Z5 shares all the major features of its much costlier siblings - IBIS (very solid), focus stacking, hi-res EVF, weather sealing and function buttons/customization! Sensor-shift hi-res mode is the only feature I'd miss but that goes for Z6 II/Z7 II as well. The sensor performs remarkably well, effortlessly producing identical results to that of my wedding shooter friend's Z6 II upto 6400 ISO with the later being 1/2 stop cleaner afterwards. What's more, according to Thom Hogan, Richard Wong and a few others, Z5's (D750) sensor probably holds a slight dynamic range advantage at around base ISO (100-800)! The raw files are rich and flexible, provides ample room to draw out even finer detail. Colors are pleasing yet true to life - I believe Nikon still produces the best yellows and greens! Finally the Z 24-120 f/4 runs circles around my old F mount 24-120, beating it at every optical aspect that I can think of! This glass exhibits great resolving power, it's super sharp even wide open and I get the feeling that it won't be a mismatch even for the Z7's 45mpx sensor! The best part however is its versatility - I can get from 24mm wide to 120mm tele without compromising optical quality. I'm getting very good macro(ish) shots too thanks to the lens's close focusing capacity with a ~0.4X magnification at any focal length. If anyone isn't too keen on wildlife or birding and want the best possible image quality for landscape, nature, hike within a very reasonable price range - this is it!

I think the price categories should be reworked to 1k, 2k, 3k for future comparisons. The unlimited budget, while fun, if you really had an unlimited budget I doubt you'd be watching this video and the gap between $1000 and $3000 is huge and there are lots of great cameras around $2000 that just can't be accounted for when $3000 cameras are usually just technically better.

After having owned many different cameras thru the years, 74 now, I settled on a D850 with a combination of Ziess and Nikon glass. I’m sure there are great other combinations out there but I have found my setup to be excellent. I can use live mode on my camera but I prefer shooting thru the view finder. I have bags I hang on the tripod to put rocks in to stabilize the setup. I shoot very slow and methodically, I shoot maybe a couple of hundred shots a year, probably less than 10 actually make it to my big prints. IT’s quality not quantity.

Appreciate the rep for the Pentax KF but really... to not mention the Pentax K-1 anywhere (even as an honorable mention) is pretty criminal! You yourself have pinned the K-1 to being one of the best landscape cameras ever made! Consider the following; - IBIS - 36mp - FF - BUILT IN ASTROTRACER - Pixelshift (which is completed in camera and ready for editing in LR as a DNG!) - Ruggedness and exceptional weather sealing (you literally put it in a stream in your video, these things matter to a landscape shooter!) - Unique and extremely useful tilt screen! - LED lights to help you see the ports and buttons on your camera in the dark! - Superbly comfortable. - Excellent IQ. - GPS. I've since moved on from the K-1 but that's because my pursuits are different, I will still whole heartedly endorse a K-1 or 645Z for landscape work. To me it sounded like you actually placed all round good performing cameras above the K-1 here, but real landscapers genuinely don't care much for features and perks outside of their main focus. To have built in GPS, Astrotracer and Pixelshift (both the handheld and tripod version) should really trump a camera that features eye detection if we're REALLY talking about Landscape cameras. Shame on you DP!

As a Sony A7R3 and Nikon Z7 shooter, the Sony cameras are much better suited for shooting astro, as the Nikon Z7 (and Canon R cameras) screen is virtually pitch black! Whereas on my Sony, I can actually see stars (screen is still dark, but not too dark) making it so much more easier to focus on them and compose. As for day time landscapes, they're both amazing but the Sony system has way more lens options. I only use my Z7 paired up with the 70-200mm f4 VR now, although that won't be for long as I'll be getting the Tamron 35-150mm for the Sony soon 😁

I'd like to see which cameras you would choose for real estate, architecture, food, product, and macro photography. One thing to keep in mind with those genres is that the larger your sensor, the smaller the aperture that you have to use to get the same depth of field and the brighter your strobe needs to be to compensate for the smaller aperture. So the bigger your sensor, the more money you not only spend on glass, but also on lighting, and the more weight you have to carry around. (Just think about the difference it makes when you can use a Godox AD200 instead of an AD600, for instance.) Bigger sensors also drain the batteries in your lights faster for the same reason, so you end up having to bring extra batteries. With that said, I'm sure those 100 megapixel sensors offer excellent dynamic range, which might require less bracketing.

I totally agree with your choices, with one caveat: If you're doing a lot of hiking, you'll definitely want to stick the micro four thirds or APSC sensors because of the weight, not only of the camera itself, but more importantly, the weight of the lenses and tripod. About a year and a half ago I was out hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with a friend who just got his first Nikon full frame mirrorless camera. I don't remember if it was a Z5 or Z6. Anyway, when we went hiking, he was only taking his 24-70 and nifty fifty because (1) he couldn't afford a full set of lenses and (2) his lenses were so heavy that he just didn't want to haul them up a mountain. For hiking, I would take my Olympus E-M5 II with the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 for environmental portraits, the Pana/Leica 8-18mm f/2.8-4 for ultra wide landscape shots, the Panasonic 12-32mm kit lens for the mid range, the 100-300 for the telephoto range, mostly in case we happened to see some interesting wildlife, and the Olympus 60mm macro just in case. For shorter hikes, I would take the E-M1 II with the Pana/Leica 8-18mm, Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro, and Panasonic 25mm f/1.7. At one point, we were taking long exposures of rivers and waterfalls and he looked over at me and asked if I was taking handheld long exposures. When I replied that I was, he was shocked! Even though his Nikon had IBIS, he just didn't trust it to take even a 2-3 second exposure handheld, which meant that he had to carry around a tripod and I didn't. I've even taken sharp handheld exposures of up to 1 second at 300mm on an unstabilized lens, which is equivalent to a 600mm lens on full frame. I also found the close focus capability of the 12-100mm lens to be really useful when I found a slug along the trail and wanted to get a closeup of it. I think it's roughly equivalent to a .5x macro lens on FF, although that varies slightly across the zoom range. Anyway, even if price is no object, if you're a hiker, you're going to want to have a second camera body with an MFT or APSC sensor to save weight, even though you might use a 100 megapixel medium format camera when you don't have to carry it very far.

I often hike long distances when doing landscape photography. This is why I currently use both the Fujifilm x-h2 and x-t30. 40/26MP and a FF equivalent range of 24-450mm in a total package below 1,5kg. If weight wasn't such a priority, I would probably use the Nikon z7ii as I shot Nikon in the early days, the Fujifilm GFX would be a bit cumbersome for me because of its depth-of-field - not such a fan of post-photo-merging. If you’re not too worried about ultra wide angle lenses, the Fujifilm system is amazing for landscape photography. The colors the sensor and lenses give you beats any post processing in my opinion. Plus it’s easier to use those cameras when you have gloves on because of the analog dials, which is a necessity for when it’s freezing outside. Also you can find some manual focus wide angle lenses for less than $100 which are very sharp.

The 100s is spectacular, but for the difference in price, you could pick up 2 - 3 lenses for the same amount as just the one 100s body. I haven't compared too closely yet, but the 50s ii I just picked up looks better than my 5DSR and R5.

I still use my K1, ibis, weather sealed etc, the K1ii has baked in NR in RAW so was probably not considered. Tech moves on, and for a smaller package I found either the Sigma fp or fpL to be surprisingly good, give or take the evf ergonomics.

If I had the money (and was a landscape photographer), the Fuji GFX100S is the absolute winner. Solid choice there, Chris! But if I did not have that kind of money, I would look at the S1R quite closely. It goes on sales and discounts (and in the used market) for under 2000 USD, and add on the excellent Lumix S 18 1.8 lens, 16-35 f/4 lens or even the 24-105 lens, and you have a really versatile and budget friendly offering in the landscape camera market. Or just go to DSLRs and get a used Nikon D850, the DSLR Nikon F glass is going fairly cheap in the used market nowadays :)

I think a good runner-up for best landscape camera is the Sigma fp l. Small and lightweight with 61 Mp. Lots of lens choices. No IBIS but a tripod is often used to landscapes and several L-mount lenses have OIS. It is also a very easy to operate camera.

The FP L, such a fantastic sensor (basically the same as in the Sony A7 rV I think) Just that the body leaves a lot to be desired. Lack of IBIS is not the worst thing, but its terrible detatchable EVF is. The only nice thing about it is that they could release a better EVF and owners could just buy that without having to upgrade to a whole new body, but the position and ergonomics of it still won't rock my boat.

Thank you for your reviews. I am looking for a camera that will do landscapes, people (events), and general outdoor nature. I live in Alaska and hike long distances so I'm looking for something lightweight and easy to use. I'm not an expert, but am turning a lifetime hobby into more of a developed passion. My goal is to work my way into professional photography. I have a couple old SLR's that are WAY too heavy and cumbersome. I'm often hiking or on a bike and would appreciate ideas on lightweight cameras that have nature, portrait, people capability. Easy controls are important to me as are ergonomics. Thank you for any ideas. I'm attempting to find newer reviews since many are 3-4 years old.

Thx for putting this comparison together. To me (as an amateur!) just looking at camera bodies is only half the truth since lenses are at least as important as the camera itself. This is why many years back I went for the Canon 1:3.5/24mm L TS-E, 1:1.8/85mm and the 1:4/16-35mm L lenses with a Canon 6D.

You mentioned it a little but not enough, size and weight matters a TON. Yeah a FF camera gives you a stop of dynamic range, but while an M43 or apsc camera can get that with a quick bracket, the FF can never get to the same weight. Most of my landscape comes from backpacking trips, so I specifically switched away from FF.

An idea for another buyers' guide -- best cameras for live concert video. Recording a live event usually takes at least 3 cameras, and as a solo shooter, 2 of those cameras are on tripods with only 1 being handheld.

One reason to choose the Z6II over the Z5 for landscape is that on the Z5 you can't disable the on-screen data overlays. There is no way in either EVF or LCD to just see the image you're composing, and I find that very annoying for landscapes. The Z6II and Z7II don't have that problem.

No one has mentioned the Canon M6mk2.Some complain about the lack of lenses but with the 11 to 22mm and the 18 to 150mm you have a very small setup which is ideal for hiking and which covers a wide range of focal lengths, ff equivalent to 17 to 240mm, and it won't break the bank. And don't forget the 32 mp sensor which allows for a good amount of cropping.

Hi Chris, do you know if Fuji is thinking about continuing with the Fujis x10, x20 and x30 one day? I've got the x20 and i've waiting for years to have an x40 or sth. Something that compact, small, without a fixed focal lens and uptodate? That's my dream but it seems that they are not interested in that anymore. I've got the x20, xt20 and xt3. It's a shame because I love Fujis and specially the little ones with non fixed focal lens. Keep up with the great work guys. Bye!

I'd like to see the best travel/snap camera for casual photo x video socials. It's not my niche personally, but if anyone ever asks for a suggest I have always said Canon G7X. Digital IS, ND, 24-105, selfie screen, Canon colours for when raw is too techie. Plus, it's compact, light and discreet to get into museum and shows etc. It even has a nice app and USB-C charging so you don't need more gear than your phone charger to run it. And if you want that terrible orange and teal look, you can actually upload it to the camera via picture profiles and Canon's camera window software.

If you can find one, the GX8 with a very similar 20MP sensor and smaller but still rugged build is almost as good as the G9 for photos, if you're not interested in 80MP files. I have both (paid $350 for the GX8 and $800 for the G9), and I still find myself using the GX8 more often. The G9 in many ways feels like overkill for my purposes, but I can understand why some would want the extra features.

You mentioned the 2xTiltscreen on the Sony as big feature, I recall that Panasonic S1/R has that as well. S1R will give your more MP and tilt screen as "we landscape photographers" don't care about AF. The DR is also great on S1R.

7:30 I think really hits a good point that many people seem to ignore.... what you actually need vs the marketing hype. I hear a lot of people say "Well the Nikon Z7 [or Z6[ has slow auto focus". Yeah that may be true, but for landscapes, you're not tracking subjects so it may be a bit slower than say Sony or Canon, it's fast enough for the intended tasks (which is one reason why I won't upgrade from a Z7 II to the Z9 or a Z8 if they release one -- I just don't need the super fast AF for what I shoot and the Z7 II especially offers a lot for not really a lot of money if you think about it [$3000 for a 45MP high-res sensor with great DR, IBIS, dual card slots, etc, etc). And I mean given I only generally shoot landscapes, portraits/people/models, and travel photography, the Z7 II (and Z6 II as I have one for a backup camera) are excellent and I can't really see myself upgrading or feeling the need to upgrade at least for the next 5-6 years. I mean for less than a Z9, I can get a nice compliment of cameras -- two FF bodies -- for less than a flag ship). IF for some reason I as going to upgrade, I would make the large jump to a 100MP Fuji MF camera, although I would still hold onto my Z7 II and at least a few lenses for landscape as it's just such a great camera for the task, and doesn't cost that much. And I'd have to have some pretty good reasons to buy a 100 MP camera to be honest. I'm sure those 400 MP images are going to cause some computers to spontaenously combust when people go to edit them. Some have a hard enough time trying to merge 45 or 60MP images as it is (even with a half-way decent processor and mid-range graphics card).

Value skyrockets when you go used. The 50MP 5DS series is under $1000. I'm certain the 61MP A7R4s are under $3K used. Maybe $2K now lol. Fuji GFX 50 series is around $2200 and gets full coverage with certain 35mm SLR glass.

I picked up a Nikon Z7 when it first came out and found it to be an amazing landscape and portrait camera. As newer versions came out, I decided to invest more into lenses which turned out to be a good move. I don't use it for video and I'm not into what I consider ridiculous amounts of fps. To me its just marketing ploys which are not needed by most shooters. BTW, the features in the Z7II could have easily been put into the Z7 but I guess that's how they figure to keep selling gear.
