DR #21 - B&K Precision 1477 Oscilloscope Tear Down & Tune Up

In this video, I completely tune up my one and only B&K 1477 scope. Specfically, I remove all 3 PCBs, replace all electrolytic capacitors, replace thermal paste between transistors and heat-sinks, clean all variable resistors, and finally test the scope.

It is DEFINITELY necessary to touch up the switches in mine.. Just bought one today for $50, and the knobs and switches are so bad its causing intermittent problems and its a moderately severe problem.. :\ I hope I can find new versions of these switches!

Thank you very much for all this information. I have one of these exact units. Mine works well but the "Auto" sweep does not work. When I have a signal it will trigger on it but with no signal the Auto sweep does not send a sweep signal. Do you maybe have any pointers to help trace the problem?

Great job... Would you have any ideas for the 1474 model.. it will trigger on auto but not on manual trigger setting. When sits for awhile unplugged, it will work properly for a short while but then , back to the auto trigger only.

I've seen that often with new caps not seeming to check well. I wonder if they "break in" after a bit.

Eventually you'll run into a case on older gear where the ESR is actually supposed to be higher then what you would expect and it's part of the design. I've run into this a few times, some older switch mode supplies for example can really dislike modern low ESR caps. The trick is to always know your replacing like for like and not just go with 'low ESR' caps. I'm assuming you know this already.

You can't go by the values on the charts of those ESR meters. Always wrong. Best is to compare with new name brand cap. As a general rule, very general, unless low esr is required, any esr less than 4 is probably not very bad. That's a generic rule when working on vintage gear. Not useful for modern electronics which typically have low esr caps in switchmode ps.
