Considered the “father” of NDE research, Dr. Bruce Greyson discusses why near-death experiences matter to experiencers, science, healthcare and society-at-large.
🔔 Be sure to click the bell to turn on notifications to see future videos.
Substantial research into near-death experience focuses on their frequency, common features, possible physiological and psychological causes, and common aftereffects. This information has been greeted by the public, to a large extent, as comforting entertainment, and it has been dismissed by scientists, to a large extent, as meaningless tricks of the brain.
Are NDEs more than that? Are they important enough to demand the serious attention of both scientists and the public? I argue that NDEs are far more than entertainment or brain tricks, but in fact are critically important to experiencers, to scientists, and to the public at large.
In this IANDS conference presentation, Dr. Bruce Greyson discusses why NDEs matter to experiencers, why they matter for our scientific view of the relationship between mind and brain and for scientific ideas of survival of consciousness after death, why they matter for how we provide medical care, and finally why they matter for how we all lead our lives and view our role in the universe.
About Dr. Bruce Greyson
Dr. Bruce Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Greyson has consulted with the National Institutes of Health and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and at the Dalai Lama’s compound in Dharamsala, India. He has earned awards for his medical research and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by that organization.
Dr. Greyson’s interest in near-death experiences began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences, and for 27 years edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only scholarly journal dedicated to near-death research. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.
Dr. Greyson is the author of "After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond". The book challenges our everyday ideas about our minds and our brains and offers key insights on how we can begin to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Sir you are a true humanitarian Genius! Your work is deep and profound not only about afterlife but what spirituality truly is! True spirituality is not about only deep intellectual concepts that majority of this pseudo teachers out there sell, but it comes to compassion, giving with profound meaning and necessity to others sometimes at a great sacrifice to self! These activities are not easy in real life. God Bless you and your profound work! I absolutely Love it. Thank you so much

Bruce Greyson makes a great case that near-death experiences offer a lot of important information for those who will take time to listen and do the research- this includes materialists and skeptical scientists. Science methodologies are based on a materialistic view of the world. The fact that NDEs do not fit into this mold doesn't mean they aren't true. #Galileo

What happened to me about 5 years ago was quite surreal. I never had an NDE all of my life, but I simply knew that this existence is not the end to it all and had episodes in my life that was making me more aware of it especially after my partner's suicide 19 years ago. About 5 years ago I came across NDE story on You Tube (Anita Moorjani) and then watched another couple of them. As I had to go to work I clicked on "shut down" button on my PC. It wouldn't shut down. I clicked again and again. I had computers for over 21 years and this never happened to me before or after that again. I literally had to pull the plug on my PC as to switch it off. Nevertheless, the message was very clear to me "KEEP WATCHING", so I did and still do and I have to say am very grateful to all these people who are sharing their experiences with us. I learned a lot and it helped me tremendously. Sometimes I just watch someone's story and I feel so good afterwards and my whole day is a bliss.

I really like this topic, and I would really love to believe that life goes after we die, but I am just too entrenched in the science of knowing and proof. This topic, just like believing in heaven or going to heaven just seem seems like the bribe of society to try and control all of us to live productive and honest lives out of the fear of not if we don't. If both of these things are true, we may never know until our time is over. At least with this topic and NDE, it is using science to try and understand and try to find those proofs and definitive answers and I'm all for that. Organized religion and the fear of not going to heaven if you don't follow the "rules" will still be the thing that keeps people more or less on track. I'd like to live my life knowing that when, how and why my life ends, I just live on after death and not have to live by any "rules" set to keep me in some kind of societal path. Maybe "how" we live our current life will determine what kind of afterlife we end up in, who knows, but I am intrigued and am researching this topic and Dr Greyson like the rest of you. X Files nailed it, I want to believe.

that's why we should call this quest for truth what it deserves to be called : Philosophy the lover of wisdom and understanding and not Religion. Society as it has been constructed for us is based wholly on Religion which seeks to control and dominate by fear which is in stark contrast to a father figure that they like to put out there, more akin to a mother that softly aims to correct and lead by example and forgives everything . I think spirit world is kind enough to present it's children with what ever vision of the afterworld they conceive of. so if you expect Jesus you'll be shown him, so depending on your own understanding of nature , the universe you get presented with that version, a personalised afterlife. The goal is to find the holy grail, the truth about life and the universe and when you really have it you merge with the ALL.

Just one question if possible to answer....the data we collect in this awareness (the reality of the world we are seeing and feeling as we are alive) could it be taken with us to a “possible” awareness ( the other reality ) after we die? Sorry if it sounds confusing....I know from your studies that time and space doesn’t exist in this other reality or awareness so therefore some data we collect here probably won’t have a need to exist when we live this body such as taste or smell, however feelings and connection are still with us. What kind of data would we have in this other reality? Such as environmental factors? What kind of environmental factors this new reality would have....oh dear I just lost track of my thoughts....this is so fantastic....totally impossible to perceived when the only reality we know is the one we can only perceive in the world we live now.

28:45 I just now considered that during my experience in what has been referred to by many as a black void or womb, in this space without much to do with any notion of time: - it seems to be potentially an experience point that is devoid of consciousness. moments would pass with consciousness certainly but it would be as if timeless gaps would pass with no independent consciousness, kind of analogous to Stephen Hawking's disprove idea of energy remaining in a black hole devoid of its original information. in the void I would experience myself, but I would also experience a sense of having been on stand-by mode. it was like I could check in to make sure the multiverse was still there and then go back into stand-by mode devoid of and consciousness/information. I would reserve a self location/energy but without any requirement for any distinctions. *seems like this is probably similar to the state required when merging with other soul's or the light; we go into a passive stand-by capacity to have an uninterrupted experience of the light/energy/information of a soul or source.

imagine funding NDEs with U.S Military Budget, maybe there would be technology to kill a person temporarily for a few hours or days perhaps to explore the after life, we could travel from here to other worlds anytime

Mine kind of went passed just Astral, though I still did pop out of my body and zoomed around. I then returned to my star. I am asleep inside of it right now and projecting here. Yes, an actual star at the edge of the universe. I could see beams of light cutting thru deep space coming from me and was slowly spinning counter clockwise.

@@EchadLevShtim I always saw myself as a projection before I even came to know about these concepts through quantum physics. I would like to know what star system you are projecting from if you don't mind sharing, as well as whether you met your soul family during your NDE journey. I remember reading an NDE where someone described all of us as having existed in soul clusters or communities but living in pure love and harmony. In Dr. Eben Alexander's book, I read something similar to that as well. He saw people playing and children laughing while he was given a tour by his Sister. Another gentleman who drowned saw his friends (from another realm) kind of lovingly making fun of him for his silly mistake that led to him almost drowning. These friends have never lived here on earth yet he remembered them. I am amazed by all this and so wish I could be given a chance to see and experience it. But for now, I am waiting to experience it through your story 🙈😌💕

What is strange is that if God revealed himself every soul would surely follow him - those that do not at the moment are simply questioning his existence ..... surely as limited in knowledge humans are not expected to simply accept - if they were so one could equally believe in Aliens even if the evidence is absent! God’s presence would unite all humans instantly - so why not do so! No one needs to go to hell. Perhaps there is another explanation for life after, perhaps as nature brings us into existence it equally found a way to eternal existence beyond - its all science! OR .... there’s a another explanation which I will not suggest on this platform since I don’t really have the evidence.

Let's hope it's not thus

This talk sounds more like a religious or cult teaching than scientist presentation. The speaker said NDE does this or does that anecdotally, but he didn't present anything on the authenticity or nature of NDE itself. I am really surprised that a reputable institution like Univ of Virginia has been funding this scientist(?)'s research for years. This was just a rambling for something, at best a pseudo-science. And, I consider myself a spiritual person, not at all an atheist.
