What happens when two dynamic, knowledgeable, powerhouse leaders team up to address a pressing issue that impacts us all?
Dr. Burke Harris and Ms. Winfrey discuss Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), connecting over their decades of helping people impacted by childhood adversity, from San Francisco to South Africa! We love this helpful breakdown of ACEs and how they can lead to toxic stress. By asking ourselves the critical question posed in Ms. Winfrey and Dr. Perry's new book, "What Happened to You?," and checking out the resources on NumberStory.org, we can learn about our ACEs, work on our healing, and shift how we view ourselves, each other, and the world.

I truly am obsessed with this myself. Your Ted talk opened the doorway for me figuring out what was going on with me. I have an aces score of 9 and a residency score of 2 I believe. I'm in counseling and a recovering drug addict. I didn't become an addict until age 28 I'm 33 now and it's very hard. I have to constantly work at things. I wish I would have discovered this before I allowed my trauma to effect my own children. I'm always having trauma responses conscious and unconscious. It effects everything in my life right now.. the tone of voice someone speaks to me in triggers my fight or flight response simply because as a child my mother was so emotionally abusive my survival instinct became doing anything to prevent her from speaking to me that way. So when it happens I can't breathe I panic and it has held me back in life.

Alas. So much discussion about healing and recovery and so little about the primary prevention of unsupportive and harmful parenting. A new kind of parenting education that reaches everyone, everywhere would be a powerful form of prevention.

Oprah monetising on child abuse... Its all celeb fodder to the elite who lack of 6 -8 years of intense, professional training. Soundbites are empty and leave those who need professional information, as empty as before.

I'm not always a big Oprah Winfrey fan from a TV perspective, but she's a really good person to talk about this. She went through a helluva lot when she was a child and came through not just with career success, that's not really the point, but she seems to have come through her experiences quite well-adjusted and empathetic.

I love this so much. As someone from the UK who trained originally as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, I've always asked this question; however after several years, I realised that it was important to be systemic in my approach, so I also trained as a systemic psychotherapist. I applaud you for highlighting this 👏🏾

Thankyou so much for your wonderful work in this area Dr. Nadine and Oprah for talking about this! I agree it is a public health crisis. I have been stuck in the trauma response state for so long since I had an A.C. E. score of 10 by the time I was 7 years old and have been re traumatized as an adult on several occasions I ended up on disability in my 40's with no appeal! when I was finally diagnosed with complex ptsd and now I am in the process of applying for death with dignity in another country because my health issues are so severe and continue to worsen. Why are we so behind in the midwest here on this issue? Why can't we see that prevention is key?! The widespread ignorance is unacceptable, it drives me batty!

This definitely passed the Bechdel test. God its inspirational seeing two fucking awesome women doing such big amazing things. Learning about the ACE study was my ‘last straw’ watching my younger siblings being abused. The fact that you statistically carry it with u was just not ok to me, and I do what i can to destress my little boys now❤️ When theyre teens theyre moving in with me to start healing asap.

8 unless jail counts as prison, and my mom leaving a few times and coming back counts as "separation". If these two count than it would be 10. Ive been suicidal, depressed, completely messed up in the head. Not going anywhere in life. I felt validated by this test and i am ready to go and start my healing journey. ACE and trauma survivors we got this! 🎉.

Dr. Harris, loved this interview and information. Would it be possible to add the word "trauma" and even "stress" to this video? It may show up in more searches, to help more souls. I am researching to including trauma informed or trauma sensitive elements in yoga teacher training. Thank you!

So thankful that u guys are bringing attention to this issue. I’m a 45+ years RN, my dau lost her 19 year old brother at 12. Horrible at any time, but terrible at pre-puberty. I was a small voice, but u r drawing specific attention to this. Comfort, caring, love acceptance, and tolerance, and many other efforts are needed. Finally, u who are powerful in ur arena, will put effort and resources to create healing. My daughter enjoyed resources, others are not so fortunate. Please don’t give up ur efforts. ,

What happened to this person, and then what does this person need in order to get back into balance and alignment with their highest good, and what support systems need review or more assistance in this person's area and is it needed on an even wider scale. Where do we need to future invest or reinvest our societal resources, attention, energy and use of the word in order to nourish change.

Caning and bratalizing kids is systemic practice in all schools especially in Kenya despite its being criminal. They say its not possible to train another persons child if you cannot humiliate. Its quite disturbing
