It experienced moderate success on the charts, until it became a massive hit when Dre won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance for the song during the Grammy Awards of 1994.

It's actually a whistle like sound played on a minimoog synthesizer. The melody was sampled (replayed) from Mothership Connection by Parliament.

@T T Indeed. Classic analog synths (even modern reissues) cost thousands. But ironically back in the late 80s-early 90s they were cheap. Musicians wanted the new digital synths and samplers with MIDI capability and ditched the old analogs.
