I think you are onto something here. Trump plays a game of keep away, just far enough to be out of the constitutional scholar's reach. The plutocrats around the world who coordinates his direction may be closer to the White House grounds than we know. They're trading dark money for election results and Donald Trump is the latest American product of that.
@robertrichard6107

@@eriktheblue3496 If your talking to me Erik, I think Trump had more to do with laundering Russian Mob money in New York, possibly the source of the dark money. All this big money that Putin indirectly got loaned to him is coming out in the wash eventually. Definitely why he won't comply with the emolument requirements, it'd look like Russian State money was involved in his election. But, wether he robbed Peter to pay Paul with that, it's probably tied up in the Tower he's trying to build in Moscow.

Alfred Alfrush - Before we dismiss Europe so readily, let us not forget that Europe gave us The Reformation, The Renaissance, The Enlightenment, The Scientific Revolution, The Industrial Revolution, Liberalism (which encompasses limited government, individual rights, free markets, democracy, secularism, gender equality, freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, etc.) In the darkest days of the 1940s a madman might have given us reason to believe that that Europe had become insane and was committing suicide. But these principles of Western Civilization had become so enshrined in humanity that forces from across the globe came together to put down this fascism. Europe and the world goes through periods of madness - such as Right Wing populism and authoritarianism, but Western Civilization will eventually correct them. Btw, I am not European.

I like to watch DR. Zakaria's SUNDAY show and his specials. As a keen and well informed observer, he has the world situations down pat. Missing however in his analysis of the US is the power of MONEY and how the neoliberals have used Trump (yes, tribalism) to confirm their dominance of the US economy and culture. I was disappointed that nobody asked a question along those lines. Nobody knew what how Putin would interfere in Ngorno Karabazh with the current outcome. I am more hopeful than he is about the eventual successes of coalition governments of the Europe, Australia, N. Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan etc than he is although he says he admires them or at least Denmark. The key is better education, of course. If the educated elite of Hong Kong leaves the only point of China incorporating it is national pride and they know it. Similarly with Taiwan, a huge success Chang could never have dreamed of, culturally, financially, commercially and with the pandemic.

Fareed talk about different dynamics which is of course correct. I wonder if the single most important change to the drivers which shape our society is the enormous tolerance we seem to have acquired for lying. The truth is indeed a slippery concept but it is relatively easy to identify an out right lie. If bear faced lying could be made somehow illegal it would improve our society somewhat.

If he's talking about the economic crisis of 2008, it most definitely was not caused by the private sector. On the contrary! It was caused by a combination of the government telling banks that they needed to make housing loans to people who, it was questionable, were going to be able to pay them back. Second point: those banks were also deregulated ... by the government, and so, were allowed to bundle those questionable loans and sell them. This error, earlier on in this video , 9:30, makes me hesitant to trust the rest of this talk.

Dr. Zakaria is a brilliant thinker with valuable insights into the workings of American politics today and their parallels abroad, weakened only by his persistent bias that left wing ideology is somehow preferable to individual freedom; free markets; and, small government. Trump may be a despicable person worthy of disdain, but compared to Biden he is a better choice for President by a country mile. His use of the term "right wing populism" is uttered as a pejorative but is in fact the equivalent of "common sense".

*Does the Senate's rejection to call additional witnesses who will testify to Trump's inability to run the country mean the Senate will fail its task to investigate whether Trump is suitable as President of the United States despite alleged attempts to exploit Congress appropriated financial aid to Ukraine in order to gain a personal political advantage in the 2020 election?* To determine that in a dispassionate impartial manner following facts have to be considered: In *Article 1 of Impeachment* the House managers put forward a chain of events which took place in 2019 and comprised all the impeachable actions that Trump supposedly had taken. Those were: (1) asking the newly appointed President of Ukraine to open an investigation on the Bidens, (2) asking the Ukrainian government to announce that the investigation had been initiated, (3) asking Ukraine to come up with compromising information on the former VP Joe Biden, (4) intending to use that information for personal purposes and in particular to gain politically strategic advantages over Joe Biden who then had announced that he will be running for president and therefore could become a putative political rival in the U.S. 2020 election. The House ascertained that only the latter, _using a foreign power to influence an U.S. election,_ is an impeachable offence sufficient enough to warrant the removal of the President of the United States, which accordingly was the sole subject of the impeachment proceedings from the start. There was no presentation of a single piece of hard proof that evidenced any of the assumed events and therefore assumption N:o 4 could not be verified. As a second consequence the managers were unable to substantiate any tangible motivation for Trump's alleged intention with the deferment between July 25 and Sept. 12, or how it pertained to an election taking place a year and a half later. As for *Article 2 of Impeachment* the principal theme is basically incorrect on point of law. It is not unlawful to ask somebody who has not been subpoenaed to stay away when summoned to a Congressional hearing. Only the individual who refuses to comply with a Congressional subpoena is committing the criminal offense of 'obstruction' against the United States, which is called 'Contempt of Congress'. Since neither Trump nor anyone else was subpoenaed invoking the President's executive privilege would have been redundant. Moreover, a suggestion or proposal as to what is believed to be the best course of action for the country, even if put forward by an authoritative body, is not an impeachable offense. When examining the grounds for impeachment the Senate observed these inaccuracies as sufficient grounds for adjudicating on Article 1 and Article 2 respectively, hence the total impeachment, and for that reason voted for not calling any more witnesses and settle with those who already had been heard by the House during the impeachment inquiry and referred to in the Senate trial. Thus, as the inquiry in the House will not continue in the Senate, the majority of its members consider the Senate is prepared to try the legal validity of the allegations and then deliberate over one single issue, namely whether the charges in accordance with the Constitution will suffice for removal of President Trump from office. To prevent and counteract any suggestion of bias pertaining to the fact it is a Republican dominated Senate it will by necessity scrutinize the constitutional foundation of previous impeachments and conduct an objective and meticulously thorough investigation of the material provided by the parties prior to delivering its final determination tomorrow (Wednesday at 4 p.m.).

Even the small city that I lived in (40,000) was a blue spot in a red county. It's all over. Thing is, as immigrants moved into our city, people who didn't like immigrants moved out. Yet, they see themselves as the victims. I've overheard racist diatribes. As one of the other white customers, I've stood up for Mexican-American customers being harassed by white men in a Mexican-American restaurant. Really, the hubris of that was quite shocking. When I got a flat and was on the side of the road at night who passed me by? Plenty of white folk. Who stopped? Recent Muslim immigrants who graciously changed my tire.

The leftists are very good at throwing "right wing populism" at anything they dislike. I would like to have a definition first from Mr. Fareed Zackaria. To be honest I am sure that he has no idea what it is. He just feels it nice to throw it around. For instance, firstly Zackaria says that right wing populism is caused by immigration, then he admits that the right wing populism also surges in countries without immigration problems, without realizing that he is contradicting himself.

Populism is usually about taking a single cause and making it your entire political platform. Anti-immigration policy tends to be seen as right-wing, as it often involves authoritarianism. So taking these two things together, i.e. creating a populist campaign based on anti-immigration rhetoric, gives a form of right-wing populism. Note that immigration doesn't need to be the issue that motivates the campaign. Abortion rights and homosexuality are examples of other issues that can motivate right-wing populist campaigns. So there's no contradiction.

The weakness of identifying emigration as the primary driver of right-wing populism is that it ignores the brotherhood of billionaires that have common interests--certainly including the exploitation of third-world countries, leaving them historically bereft of both human and material resources--about which they communicate with one another, both formally and informally; and that they have had a common purpose, plan, and operation to achieve these ends, with roots extending back more than a century and a half, and on which they have been singularly focused for much of the latter half of the 20th century and up to the present. Insufficiently regulated capitalism is at the heart of emigration from the third world to the first world during the latter half of the 20th century.
