In this interview, I spoke to renowned addiction, childhood trauma and mind-body health expert Dr Gabor Maté.
We spoke about a wide variety of topics, ranging from how he believes that most mental health conditions originate from unresolved childhood trauma, to why he describes current Western culture as 'insane' because of its failure to meet basic human needs.
He went into detail about what he sees as the root causes of conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks and fibromyalgia. We also spoke about the process of reconnecting with your authentic self.
Amongst other things, we also discussed his experience of working with plant medicines such as Ayahuasca.
It was a real privilege to spend some time speaking to Gabor in London, and if you want to see more from him, check out the full interview on the Human Window website: humanwindow.com/dr-gabor-mate...

And what are we supposed to do about that? He never does actually get around to that part. Like its so easy to just have a do over. The childhood happened, the damage is done. YOU have to decide if youre going to let it define you or not. This therapist likes pointing out the obvious, but he doesnt have a magic wand. I dont want to spend my life watching videos or making him rich buying his books. You get to the end of the book and what do you do? You get on with your life like you never read it.

Wow! I knew there was a reason ‘cry it out’ with babies is being encouraged so much. So we can all become numb robots who work for the system. I hope we as a generation can change things, start responding to our babies and children’s cries, and start a new world of more happy and content humans who love one another ❤️. We need to start with ourselves though...

Yes childhood and how you are raised has a very strong influence on a person’s psychological, mental and emotional development. Ancestral issues traumas are also passed down the family line, this resides at a cellular memory level, children also receive the emotional imprint of the parents. People act predominantly from unconscious desires, intentions, beliefs meaning they are not aware of themselves. Until someone becomes aware of themselves, they study themselves and their own psyche cycles will continue to play out. People need to learn to become connected back to themselves otherwise their life is an outward projection of internal drivers.

My parents both medical doctors were cruel-cold and abusive to myself and my two older brothers. As a result I suffer from severe depression and alcoholism, one of my brothers has paranoid schizophrenia, my other brother a drug addict and alcoholic. My younger brother survived with only deep anger, he was the golden child. So much for doctors and their ability to heal. My parents were sociopaths with narcissistic tendencies. @@Amy623 whenever communicating with dysfunctional parents, try to communicate diplomatically. Dysfunctional parents are very defensive and often refuse to take ownership of their poor parenting. Pray also that they change for the better. Lastly, know that you become who you want to be, and also become the parent that you desperately needed, thereby creating a healthy, functional generation of children, which produces a cycle of generation after generation. Allow dysfunctional parenting to end with you.

At the same time you might say the only actual result you'll ever 'get', is the realization that the reality of our existence is exactly as it should be. Only (childhood) trauma/conditioning suggest hard work is required to become 'whole', since socialy unaccepted states of being had apparent isolating (fracturing) results. There's no real recovering. Only from the illusory perspective you're not whole however it is.

@@curiosity_saved_the_cat The whole thing is naval gazing bullshit. This endless pursuit of happiness or to become 'whole', like how the F are you supposed to know when that occurs? Cant we just be? I am SICK of trying to aspire to certain feelings and levels of consciousness and being made feel like a failure if I haven't achieved it. Cant I just HAVE a bad fucking day? or week? I dont want or need to be fixed, because some people just ARE what they ARE. I am prone to misery, I am prone to mood swings, I am prone to existential 'whats the ffing point'. That is just the way my mind works. I THINK TOO MUCH. What am I supposed to do, think less? I cant reprogram my brain by reading some friggin book by some man who doesnt know squat about my life. Im so done with all this lol, life is just too short. Thank you for this wonderful interview. My wife just healed from endometriosis, after going through the emotional process described by Gabor Maté. A very painful yet rewarding path (of course it's not the healing that's painful but the psychic wounds that the disease indicates). Thank you very much for asking this specific question. Adding "endometriosis/fibromyalgia" to the title of the video would probably be useful since so many people need a way out of this EXCRUCIATING pain, and since this kind of information on the subject is not easy to find.

Stumbling upon this is such a huge breath of fresh air. I'm an Aspie who was raised by extremely broken individuals who suffered a lot under the Soviet regime, and my hardest journey has been accepting that I was never truly properly loved and taken care of because they were so emotionally stunted and unprepared for both life an parenthood. More horrifying is the fact that the majority of the population is in the same boat too, and perpetuating cycles of neglect and abuse thanks to our normalisation of it. It feels ridiculous pointing fingers at how flawed our society is when we have come so far in terms of all these technological advancements, which we use to justify our greed and self destruction, but when we look back at how things were historically, we see that our current environment is in no way adapted to our needs. "we are a species with amnesia" is the most accurate way of putting it... It also feels like the latest generations of young people are becoming more aware of this and are starting to break these cycles, thanks to the advancements in psychiatry that have been made over the last couple of dozen of years

I do not know anyone who has not had some form of trauma. None of us got Ozzie & Harriet for parents. Perhaps there should be more parenting classes, not just about burping and feeding but on emotional development of children.

@@kellyv6075 yes I agree and after a while to me it can be quiet exciting to do, like the healing is fun, and then I am able to feel the stronger heavier emotions with less resistance, its painful and tough at times and i can see how these emotions are trying to create negative thoughts, but i just stick with the feeling, and afterwards the rest of the day is always more pleasant.

Adult child of dysfunctional family. I learned not to feel and be a codependent. I have anxiety because I have a critical parent voice in my head who tells me I am garbage. So learning to love and reparent yourself. Allow and accept my feelings. I do inner child work. 12 step groups help like coda, AA,NA, and ACA. I do want to do ayahuasca to over come my childhood trauma. I have a lot of unresolved anger that need to be released. I am learning boundaries and what real love is.

Another quality interview. Thanks for sharing. Used Gabor s work as framework and toolset for understanding peeps I work with and society since 90s. Re yr friends and anxiety I d also ask whether this is affected by prescription meds taken since infancy and/or non prescription drug use adverse effects. And would dig into the work insecurities Gabor mentioned early on. Other area that could be relevant you ve covered in yr recent convo s - sleep quality, day time light exposure and effects of artificial light at night. Finally caffeine effects and social media adverse effects also important factors to include when investigating anxiety.

Moving forward, It’s important to know the messages ( the damages), however it’s not important to blame the messengers (parents). They didn’t know it themselves and the damages have been passed on generation after generation. The sooner we know, the sooner we ended the dysfunctional cycle.

I disagree, sometimes in the initial stages of healing it can be important to break free of those relationships if there was a lot of inmeshment, in order to differentiate and develop. A stage of anger at one's caretakers is also necessary. Of course the view that they didn't start it and were acting out unconsciously can be held simultaneously.

Even further i was going to school in Stockholm Sweden......with Palestinians......they got an out of state on their papers....and act out their PTSD in every day life even in school.....they dont feel they fit in And dislike the western happy go lucky culture or a reserve culture That doesn't gossip....they truly Act anxious and paranoid at times ....and they press them on to blend in Into a western society...... When immigrants from troubled world zone arive to the peaceful western world countries.. They haven't been addressed at the core issues... But a mandatory to fit into and pick up on the western world vision aka dream aka archetype ..... Its truly obvious if you interact with now come immigrants.....and then we start the blame game..... An immigration could be already A traumatic experience.....

Yet another excellent talk with the brilliant Dr. Gabor Mate. It is unfortunate that the discussion regarding Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump were edited out. Both of these people are also acting out on the world stage their own respective childhood traumas. I have heard him speak on this elsewhere and I am pretty sure that would have been the gist of what he would've been talking about if you hadn't edited it out.

Thanks for your kind words! The discussion you mention wasn't edited out - unfortunately it was not recorded in full due to an issue with the camera used to film the interview. I agree it was a shame that this part was lost, but as you say, he has spoken about them and other politicians elsewhere.

This was so helpful to me... I have been dealing with endometriosis for a few years now... and my gut feeling/obs has shown that it gets better/worse depending on my stress level. It makes so much sense now hearing there’re studies done on this connection to childhood experience. I feel very inspired and empowered to hopefully heal from all this..

There's no mention of trauma in the legal system. With traumatized people in court facing judgement and punishment before judges and lawyers. It's also important to recognize that they too are also traumatized and probably just like Gabor Maté, chose their careers as a result of unprocessed trauma. So the people running our legal systems are not only trauma uninformed and lacking any knowledge/skill/training, but they are also trauma oblivious. What a mess.
