That is the burden of the highly intelligent, seeing the true failures and grimness of the world makes them miserable. The term "ignorance is bliss" is truth. That's why Hunter gatherer tribes not considered "intelligent" (in our modern standards) have no concept of suicide, it's completely foreign to them, often times simple lives are the happiest. It's sad how many gifted and extremely world changing intelligent people have been lost to depression and suicide

It's more like having the answer to almost every problem and then being censored into silence. You sound like your asking for someone to solve the problems, the issue isn't tgat there aren't any answers it's that the one with the answers can't get enough power to carry them out. We have whole paradoxes that if you think about for more than half a second they solve themselves. There's no real great mystery once you figure it all out. But why give to a miserable evil people, it's in their nature, the appeal to their souls demands pain and judgement. Only a fool would bend the knee to the whims of these masses. Whom would gladly sacrifice them if they heard the right broadcast. The world doesn't have problems, the world has issues. It craves problems to forget, because it despises itself, it can't accept itself. Humanity is made by the weakest links and it shows. It's better to severe ties and make a new chain.

I used to have a somewhat similar view on the "curse of intelligence." Until I realised what I actually had was the curse of arrogance. @@theupson Many people, regardless of intelligence, think everything sucks for banal reasons. This isn't unique to smart people. Anyone who's poor can tell you that. The problem isn't being aware that the world is awful, the problem is going "woe is me, I'm too smart" while simultaneously either bragging about their intelligence or refusing to do anything to help the world be better. Or in the case of House just being a d*** to everyone for no reason. Which obviously is not everyone, but it is at the very least a plurality, and I would argue majority, of those who would be described as being 'burdened by intelligence.'

I know exactly what you mean... The world truly does appear dumb coming from behind my eyes. Although I have yet to figure out how to not judge others for being dumb. How do you do it? Also, how can it be arrogance if you are legitimately smarter than most ppl. Sometimes it really does feel like the vast majority of ppl have the I.Q. of a Forrest Gump...
@alansmithee419
@alansmithee419 3 ай бұрын
@@skins4thewin The simple, and most unhelpful, answer is that I just sort of stopped because I realised I was being a d*** for no reason so thought I should stop. So over time I did. But I'll try to provide some of my thoughts on the matter and hopefully it will help. Since you didn't (and may not be able to) give much indication of why exactly you find yourself judging others, I've tried to cover a few bases. Some, all, or none of this might be helpful: I'd be lying if I said I don't judge people *at all,* but if you try to catch yourself when you think you might be doing it needlessly (i.e. most/all of the times it happens) you'll naturally drop the habit over time. Understanding that it helps neither you nor the people you're judging is an important factor. If you see being judgemental as a pointless exercise that can only harm both you and them (as it is) then you'll kick yourself any time you catch yourself doing it. That association between doing it and being annoyed at yourself should make your brain start to avoid it. Perhaps a slightly more condescending way of looking at it, at least in some cases, is to realise that people don't choose all of the circumstances that lead to how intelligent they currently are. Some people had poor educational resources - not their fault - some had awful teachers - not their fault - some had to be more concerned about surviving day to day than learning new things because they were born into poverty - not their fault - and some people are just... born naturally less intelligent than others - not their fault - etc etc etc etc (you get the idea). I don't think it can ever be reasonable to judge a person for things that are (predominantly at least) outside of their control, such as how intelligent they are. To talk specifically about my case for a bit: I'm intelligent, but my work ethic is rather lacking in my estimation. There are people who work far harder than me but can't achieve as much simply because their brain doesn't work the same way - judging them would be an utter failure of character on my part. The only thing I supposedly have over them is something I didn't earn. It is something I have *despite* my personal flaws simply because I'm lucky. And if you yourself are a hard worker, keep in mind that luck may still play a factor. Also, just remember that everyone is good at different things. Someone might say something stupid in one context, but could be a genius on some other topic. Maybe they'd be the one judging you for being 'stupid' if you just happened to be talking about something else. People not having interests in the same subjects as you does not make them dumb just because they're oblivious of something that seems obvious to you. Someone may even be really bad in all academic subjects - and so possibly to most people appear stupid - but they may be extremely good at whatever it is they do for a living, and that's potentially all they need to be good at. They are still intelligent, just not by any common measure, and you could be completely unaware of it.

Ultimately yes it’s a foolish choice but most people don’t start abusing substances to dumb everything down. Often they just want an escape from the reality of their hardships and to ease their struggles even if it’s just for a fleeting moment and doesn’t solve anything. I unfortunately was addicted to dxm and the high puts you in a dissociative state that lets you forget everything troubling you, but at a terrible cost. I wanted to get away from everything and it was the easiest way I found to do it. Odds are I’ll have to spend the rest of my life with irreversible brain and liver damage and the knowledge that I did this to myself. I hope anybody else who’s struggled with or still is struggling with addiction finds the path to salvation, and if anybody reading this is going through the same thing know that there is always someone out there who cares about you and that your life is valuable and worth living.

I doubt it. Yes, DXM is sometimes helpful because it is metabolised by CYP2D6, so it induces production of this enzyme and this in effect helps in metabolism of other pro-drugs like codeine. They realized I'm a very smart person but I don't worship it, using it instead as a tool to better understand them and offer support to improve their life. Like the way I talk on paper, verbally, emails, KZfaq, etc; could I start to use sophisticated vernacular and grammatically correct sentences? Sure. But if it doesn't match what other folks are doing then what's really the point of the behavior if it serves to alienate them? Growing up, I had what was considered above average IQ through a formal test and an Independent psychologist judged that I probably would’ve scored higher if they had done the testing right and been solidly in the high 140s to mid 150s. So around lower bounds of what’s considered “gifted.” I grew up in a school district with and average IQ of 90 if I’m being generous. I was constantly abused by my peers for being smarter, and even after purposely removing myself from situations where’d they have to interact with me, they actively chased after me to harass me further. Any way I was different, they took that as an opportunity to bully me. Even as an adult, it is common for me to face isolation issues due to understanding. The way you describe it, the only reason people tolerate you is because they can use you like a tool, not just your intelligence. And all you did to get that was by changing everything about yourself to the way you speak. That doesn’t give indication of acceptance, that gives an indication that they see you as a useful gopher.

In that case, either you are not smart or you just don't think. Actual smart people aren't miserable scientists. They are chefs, fisherman, surfing instructors... Maybe they are scientists but they aren't miserable because they don't have to be. They are smart enough to control their happiness

@@antipro4483 because the outside world doesn't have an effect on you. Wow. Smart people are just immune to external effects. Amazing. Do tell me how to make that work. Do I just say fuck how I feel and do it? Man. Those people dealing with crippling depression must be stupid then. Write a book. You seem to know oh so much about intellectuals and their psychology. Please go on.

I totally get this. I spent a lot of my life drunk because I couldn't handle things. I get why so many geniuses wind up depressed and alone. I sometimes wish I could just "be stupid" and go through life in "ignorant bliss".

That patient has a point, I myself am much smarter than the average person, and I find life so much more miserable than a person with less iq than me

It’s a pain being miserable, just cause I understand things a different way and others lack the understanding of it, probably why I’m socially awkward, especially when common sense isn’t so common amongst people nowadays

Great episode. The guy is a brilliant mathematician & he took the DMX so he could tolerate his girlfriend. The episode has the fitting title of "Ignorance is bliss."

My dad's best friend was a genius. He had 22 college degrees, and he was miserable. He had 1 person who understood him because she was a genius also, and that was his wife. However, most people need more friends, and he had few friends and they didn’t understand him.
