Low Carb Down Under

Low Carb Down Under

8 жыл бұрын

Dr. Jay Wortman studied Biology and Chemistry at the University of Alberta and Medicine at the University of Calgary. He completed the Family Medicine residency at UBC before starting a private practice in Vancouver. He began combining that with part-time clinics at the STI/HIV the BC Centre for Disease Control where he eventually became the full-time Associate Director. He moved on the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada where he held senior management positions in Ottawa and Vancouver.
In 1992, Dr. Wortman developed type 2 diabetes and quickly discovered that it could be controlled by restricting dietary carbohydrates. He went on to do clinical research on low-carbohydrate diets and became a little bit famous for a study he did in the Namgis First Nation of Alert Bay which was the subject of the CBC documentary film, "My Big Fat Diet". His research interest in the dietary management of obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes led him back into clinical practice.

I was on Atkins about 12 years ago when it was very very popular and I fell off of it because I got my feelings hurt by some woman so I ate at her. Now four or five months ago I started doing low carb again with Atkins in my mind and I've already lost 40 lbs but my blood pressure is down and my blood sugar is normal went down 80 points in the first month I feel pretty good I'm 71 now and I'm just settling into a lifetime of this I'm not going to change again this is good for me.

Wonderful talk and felt very personal to me as I was living in the US just when the low carb diets were taking off. It was just about that time when I had began experiencing blood sugar problems, was away from my home and oreos turned out to be my best friends. Imagine what happened to my blood sugar. A very dear friend (God bless her heart) introduced me to Atkins diet and I remembered how my mom lost tremendous amount of weight following a version of it back in the mid 1980s, and I immediately "converted" , said goodbye to oreos and became a die hard low carber. The effects were incredible. Being able not to eat food for extended periods of time and not feeling hungry all the time and not craving sweets all the time were the biggest benefits for me. Although I didn't have a major issue with my weight I did loose the extra weight I put on after moving into the US and that was definetely an added bonus. Then I had to move back to my home country, Dr. Atkins passed away, rumors spread that he died because of the diet he was defending. And I was living in a country where bread is the main source of calories. The rest is history. Long story short, I had to deal with blood sugar issues for many years. Being pre-menapausal things got worse recently. I knew I had to change my way of eating and I knew what was the right way of eating for me. Now, here I am watching every single video on the channell and I wanna thank to everyone who contributes for taking their time to share valuable info, for educating and motivating us viewers. All the best from Istanbul, Turkey.

Low fat works and low carbs work. The SAD diet is a 2/1 carb to fat ratio or a 1/1 carb to fat calories ratio with low micro nutrients . So common sense should tell you food combining is the actual problem here.

I got interested in LCHF because I watched Robert Lustig's lecture, "Sugar: The Bitter Truth." It scared me, because metabolic disease runs in both sides of my family. What I like about Dr. Lustig and the people who speak at Low Carb Down Under programs is that everything they say about diet and nutrition is backed by randomized, controlled studies. It's shocking how little of the standard dietary advice is. I've eliminated sugar from my diet and am working on going LCHF, and I must say, the change in how I feel is amazing. I can't wait to see what the numbers are the next time I have blood work done.

Honestly, I think we can eat carbs if we don’t have issues with insulin or glucose. BUT, no one should be eating refined sugar, processed meats or prepackaged food. Eat real food, lots of vegetables, some fruit, some meat. You’ll be fine.

The sad thing is that corporations could ~choose~ to make money producing products in a sustainable manner, without damaging the ecosystems that support all life on Earth, even their CEOs and their families... The manufactured 'food' corporations could choose to offer healthy options- maybe freeze dried whole veg, with or without cream or cheese based sauces, for instance.Or what Jerry Brunetti said was the true traditional pasta of Italy- made mostly of eggs with just enough flour to hold it together. In moderate amounts, with cheese and/or high fat traditional pork meats on top, it could be a healthy choice! With veg either in the sauce or on the side, of course.

I would like to see the the list of financial contributors to the AHA and ADA. I would bet they are dirty as can be. The AHA sells their logo rights to General Mills to put on a box of Cheerios. The basis of science is that the strength of a belief should be matched to the strength of the evidence. I can't do it. So, I assume, few others can also. So, therefore, be incredulous of people who "know". The bright are never bright enough. The admission of error is even harder. I am on LCHF and it works for me. I am not recommending it because I can't see how there can be one optimal, universal diet. But a diet that makes you fat cannot be ideal.
@itzakpoelzig330
@itzakpoelzig330 10 ай бұрын
I don't know, other species seem to have one optimal universal diet, don't they? I mean every humpback whale eats krill, every lion eats meat, every koala eats eucalyptus. Humans are one species, it stands to reason that we also have an appropriate species specific diet. The trick is just figuring out what it is. I think our best bet is to look at what humans ate before we were influenced by any sort of government, industry, or religion.

Just a couple months ago the Trump administration gave an ethical waiver to someone who has been, for the last five years, a full-time lobbyist on behalf of the snack food manufacturers and the refiners of corn products (including high fructose corn syrup). Her new job within the Trump administration seemingly is to provide strategic "advice" to the Advisory Committee on Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Understanding cholesterol and it’s real effects is the key, the root driver is Insulin and it’s response to foods and drinks. Changing ones dietary intake is a lifestyle, not a diet. Firstly your body needs to heal, allowing it to regulate its new healthy intake and this will lead to weight loss, if your not over eating. Stopping snacks, breakfast, lunch and taking just one quality healthy meal each day is way more than most of us actually require.
