I’m Scottish and (obvs....) went to school in Scotland, and we were taught all about MQOS, as part of the Scottish secondary history curriculum. We were taught (this is in the 90s) that she most definitely DID suffer from porphyria. I’d never heard of it before and we were taught all about the symptoms and signs and which ones she had. I’m now a teacher in England, where MQOS is barely mentioned. Seriously. She never comes up. She’s not part of the primary history curriculum at all! So I teach my students, as an extra, who she is, and who ordered her beheading, and why, and why the English may refer to the current queen as Elizabeth the SECOND, to Scots like me, she is Elizabeth the FIRST. They’re usually blown away! Until I teach them, they don’t have a clue even that Scotland used to be an independent country entirely! It always kick starts an amazing class discussion and they always have so many questions, it’s wonderful. Truly wonderful. During times like those I feel very lucky to be doing a job I love. Your videos are fantastic and really help jog my memory about dates & events I had learnt a long time ago either in school or on my own (I’ve always been obsessed with history) which in turn, helps make me a better teacher for my pupils. I have never understood why movie makers take such artistic licence when making a historic movie! Why? History is seriously interesting. Mary Queen of Scott's was an interesting person. She did not need Elizabeth as a co lead. If they had used 100.00 to take say three different people interested on history who have read a book the story line would have been a movie worth seeing 10 times. Please Hollywood just take one it two historians to lunch and let them tell you a story.

The portuguese title of this film is "Two Queens", which I believe is a better fit to the movie since it is so keen in showing the differences and similarities between Mary and Elizabeth

I have not seen the movie yet but MQOS is one of my fave queens. She was queen of France and Scotland and even though she died in confinement, she won in the end because it was her son that became king and through her many lines descend.

My first introduction to Mary Queen of Scots was the 1971 film starring Vanessa Redgrave as Mary and Glenda Jackson as Queen Elizabeth I. I saw it on American television on PBS in the mid seventies. Although I don't profess to know its historical accuracy, I enjoyed it for the acting. After seeing Glenda Jackson in Elizabeth R, I knew I had to watch it.

I enjoyed the movie as a movie. I wouldn’t recommend it without warning about serious historical inaccuracies.

It's worth seeing one time just because there aren't that many movies that depict Mary. But I couldn't help but think the whole time that the actress playing Mary should be playing Elizabeth. The barn scene was a unique way to show communication through letters and beautifully shot. On the low quality filming I kept wondering if the producers ran out of money. I watched the movie with my mom who really found the Scottish accent distracting and overboard. Thank you for the review.

I actually did forget that I saw Mary Queen of Scots until I saw this review. Today is 6 May 2020. The film is so annoying. Everything that bothered you and your husband, Dr. Kat, is spot on. I'll leave it at that otherwise I fear that I will go into a rant on the ineptitude of this filmmaker to the point of madness. All the falsehoods seemingly just to be "woke' ... what a waste of time, talent and money not to mention the historical inaccuracies which abound. I'd love to see you, Dr. Kat, make an historical film! That would be awesome!

That was good. Thanks. I saw the film on a plane. I really appreciated how the Bothwell story line was handled vs how it was portrayed in the news of the day, and the way the Vanesa Redgrave version did it decades ago. I too was put off by the idea that Mary would have spoken with a burr-my favorite of all European accents, besides YOURS or course. I am similarly put off when Marie de Guise is played by anyone other than a French actress. One day, I'd love to see Marie Antoinette and Isabela played by Germans.

Mary, Queen of Scots was on t.v last night so, as I said to my friend, I’d watch it to point out historical Accuracies ( something I do with the woeful Spanish Princess). I found your and a Jamie’s comments hit the ail on the head. It’s a story that could , and should , have been able to stand on its own2 feet. Her formative years at theFrench Court are imperative to her story but - nothing. In my opinion it was a story about Elizabeth with Mary playing a lesser role. Just my opinion. May I say - the hairstyle they gave Mary at first! Oh dear. I’m sure the cultured , refined Mary would have balked at that. The difference between the elegant French court and the raw Scots court she came to must have been s tremendous shock! Thank you so much for your videos, I look forward to every Friday night. Seeing the trailer made me know I did not wanna see it - but to hear you talk about it all just makes it sound even more dire than I had previously thought.

Late to the game as I just recently discovered this most enjoyable channel. A truly welcome educational entertainment during this pandemic. To the point I find many films placed within a historic context (events presented being of recent vintage or reaching back to more distant times) play loose and free with the "truth" it is widely accepted by reliable historians. Why mess with the real deal as it is usually as dramatic as the concocted variance? Thanks for the review. I never saw the film as the brief clip I did see back when it was first released didn't seduce me enough to pay good money to see the film. This despite my loving historical costume dramas, good acting and great cinematography. Dr. Kat and Jamie keep 'em coming.

I've recently seen this on Netflix and must say I loved it.

Blood and Milk also seen in the opening scene of "Reign" (Netflix) O:) "The expression “krev a mlíko” means blood and milk and refers to a healthy milk-and-roses complexion. It was often used to describe blooming, rosy-cheeked country girls bursting with health. ... Another way of saying a girl is pretty and bursting with health is to say “holka jako lusk” a girl like a peapod."

I am glad I wasn't the only one who was displeased with this movie. There were so many nuanced to Queen Mary's life we could have seen. And it would have been good to hear a Scottish queen speak with the French accent she almost certainly used. I rented this movie on Amazon...so glad I didn't spend good money at the Cinema! Let the history tell the story..It's always more intriguing than poetic liscence.

You made such an interesting remark about the influence of (the choice of) a husband or child for a queen (Mary versus the virgin queen) and wihy that could be dangerous. I would love for you to make an episode about the options royal women had and how those effected them. Love your channel.

Only found the channel about a week ago...its June 2020.. I'm endlessly fascinated in history so thank you! Your reaction to the film (which I confess I hasnt seen). But reminds me of how i felt when I watched the new Emma the other day, my sister paid apple tv $7 for it. Visually stunning...but the script! The casting! And weird bits they added. I know Austen is not history and I do love it when clever people play around with the characters.. like in the FAB Lost in Austen....BUT having the girls school walk around in red cloaks remimiscent of handmaids tale and Emma having a nose bleed when Mr Knightly declares himself.....well I wonder if the screenwriter and director read the novel or did any historical research...awful waste of time and money and gorgeous costumes....oh and thankyou for the link to A stitch in time!

I watched this film, but found some of the costumes out of context, especially the 1960's style hat that Mary wore in one scene, also the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth in some kind of bothy. which never took place, it is known that the cousins wrote to each other, and i seem to remember being told at school that Mary wrote several times to Elizabeth requesting a meeting.

The truth and the legacy of Pocahontas (The arrival of the Virginia Company and John Smith, the interactions of the Virginians and the Native Americans and the aftermath of there interaction) or lastly, the legacy of Sacagawea and the explorers Lewis and Clark.

One of the best and fairest movie reviews I have ever watched! I am an avid reader of English history, so this was a must-see for me. I dragged my spouse to see it with me. My own review of this film would certainly have started similarly..."wow, this was beautiful to look at...the shots of vast, rolling green were spectacular...". And that's about where the good news would end. Mary Queen of Scots NEEDS to be fully explored in film. Her life was so eventful; I doubt most people know she was, in fact, married to a French king. QE1 overshadowed this story and it's a darn shame. I lectured my poor spouse on the way home about the almost-certain historical fact that there is no evidence that these two women ever met. Every film I've ever seen about the intersection of these 2 lives gets this wrong. A real shame...I'd say don't waste your time with this one...far more style than substance. Thanks for your channel...just found you and loving the great content!!!

I think it's ridiculous that people judge her marriage to Darnley from the 20th century perspective. They met, they negotiated and they married. That's how it worked then. Mary didn't have the priveligous of Elizabeth kingdom, the money or the power. If you read the new John Guy's book the True Mary Queen of Scots - she was a savvy savvy player who has gotten the worst reputation that they could create, which means she was quite an epic queen.

Mary, her mothers' regency, her exile at the French Court, interaction with/threat of Catherine de Medici, childhood, marriage with Francis II, Cardinal de Guise, Elizabeth de Valois, Annette de Bourbon etc Her Four Mary's (Mary Mary quite contrary ... origins true?) 2. The Marriage to Henry Stewart (dangers of Matthew Stewart' dynastic aspirations etc.), the Kirk o' Field explosion (what/why/who), the Bothwell kidnapping/rape (was he responsible for the Kirk o' Field [?]), the forced marriage (was why did she [or anyone] not object - validity?), it was surely a solution to Protestant Lords as a husband and possible king - so why the divisions? 2.1 What was HE THINKING? Could he have got away with it? 3. Mary and The Church/The Anglican/Presbyterian Church; influence of personal Catholic conviction (red dress), Knox, her Catholic and Protestant Lords, The English Catholic. 4. Mary and Elizabeth, personalities' (was Mary really so emotionally/sexually gullible? = not likely, so why the behaviour?) cousins, neighbouring (anointed) sovereigns under the influences of William Cecil & James Stewart, Cecil's misuse of the Dearth Warrant (true, or not?), Babington plot (was she involved or not?) - the correspondence ... The Armada!!! Rich stuff!!! Surely there is more detail than the standard schoolroom English History curricula have dished up thus far. I would really like to have your insight on the whole Mary Stewart history ...

I think you nailed it with the Queen's dilemma it's why Elizabeth I is fondly remembered as not just as one of England's best queens but one of its best monarch but ultimately the royal family is descended from Mary. Simon Scharma nailed it perfectly Elizabeth was a consummate politician and very smart and Mary was a mother and a woman whose loyality was abused. People at the time said that 'twas a shame they couldn't marry each other (agree they would complement each other really well) and produce kids but in a sense they did - Great Britain is a legacy of both women.

I enjoy the review and agree with a lot of the points made. However, I loved this movie! But I love all Tudor / Elizabethian / Mary Queen of Scots stuff. I am so happy when any are portrayed. And I am a big fan of Saoirse. I did know that they were some historical inaccuracies, at least from what I know of history. But I have come to accept that that is part of any historically based movie, TV show, or book. I thought it was beautifully done. And would watch again in a heartbeat. Take care guys.

I so agree BTW, that missing pieces between her arrest and death were missed opportunities in both Reign, and this movie, that part with the “casket letters” were left out. Is that because there’s not much known about that part or the Producers thought her being imprisoned for 20+ years would be boring to viewers but the pregnancy by Bothwell, miscarrying twins prematurely was indeed a missed opportunity for both films although Reign was prematurely cancelled and they had to cram the last bits into the ending. I see also how you would think Mary would have a French accent being raised there but in the movie they found a true Scottish actress to play Mary. It’s a slippery slope to play the role of “Mary” being as she was raised by the French Court born from a French Mother yet truly Scottish but then in some films has an English accent. I’m truly interested in seeing this film to see what (or not) is historically “accurate” as we know it.

When I saw the trailer depicting Mary queen of scots speaking with a heavy scots brogue, that was it for me. I think the Netflix (?) series of Mary’s life (although not complete) was much better although a lot of poetic license was used -more of a historical novel.

I really enjoyed your review especially the accurate parts you mentioned regarding the scenes that should have been storyboarded and then scrapped because some of the scenes were a little overdone. The movie was very subjective as to what the screenwriter and director wanted to focus on and other important parts of Mary's story were left out. Imo maybe the roles were miscast because Saoirse Ronan made a somewhat unsympathetic Mary despite the brutality she experienced in Scotland from the men around her. Margo Robbie made her interpretation of Elizabeth quite a bit more human and stole the movie away from Saoirse. So it became less Mary, Queen of Scots and more "Elizabeth, Queen of England and her cousin, Mary." Wonder how it would have turned out if the two actresses had switched roles? ☺ 👑

My favourite characterisation of Mary Queen of Scots is by Michelle Gomez in the comedy series 'Psychobitches'. It's hilarious! Regarding royal marriages where the wife is a queen regnant, one of the couples who managed to work it out was that of Isabel of Castile and Fernando of Aragon. Although Castile as a kingdom had several advantages over Aragon, a major part of the success, I believe, was that, early on, almost immediately after Isabel's coronation and Fernando's negative reaction to this, a strong, firm contract was drawn up, outlining the balance of powers between them ("Monta tanto, tanto monta, Isabel como Fernando"). Isabel had the power and confidence to be sure this contract was kept in force, and Fernando was intelligent and secure enough to understand the advantages of the marriage. There was, apparently, a very clear and mutual respect between them. Given, though, the English experience with Mary Tudor and Philip II of Spain was unfortunate and would have been instrumental in Elizabeth's decision to give herself to no one.

Hello, I am watching this channel from the midwest of United States. I love the history that Dr Kat has been reviewing in detail. I thought that the movie made very short shrift of Mary's time in prison and the constant moving between various castles. Also, the passing of time was very unclear as the two Queens did not seem to age. This part was really terribly portrayed. I do not think either Queen was innocent but it really did emphasize the constant machinations of the men in their courts. This was fascinating and so true even today!

Love your bouncing conversation off each other The 'barn' episode was pure cinematic license cos they never met in a barn as far as any person ever put in writing. I watched both this & The Favourite & I definitely preferred The Favourite. Olivia Coleman was fantastically barmy in that. Like you I feel the Mary, Queen of Scots would have been better suited as a miniseries on TV. It glossed over so much of her life & cut out, in my opinion, the things that made her who she was such as her upbringing.
