I'm Dr Liz O'Riordan and welcome to my Week 2 of my Breast Cancer Vlog
My breast cancer came back for the second time in July 2023, after being diagnosed in 2015 aged 40 whilst working as a consultant breast surgeon and then again in 2018
This vlog shares my personal story as a breast surgeon dealing with breast cancer for the third time
This week - it's all about results.
Results from my biopsy
Results from my CT scan
And I tell you what it's like to have a CT scan - how you lie, what you wear, what you do and what the IV contrast feels like
Next week - it's all about the surgery

Hi Liz, firstly can I say how pleased I am that your CT scan results came back clear … what a relief! Looking forward to hearing how you got on with your surgery, I hope all went well. Wish I had found your channel sooner, l love how open and honest you are and the fact that you have so much knowledge really is helpful. I don’t think people understand the physiological effects having a cancer diagnosis has. I was diagnosed in October 2020 with grade 3 stage 1 HER2 Positive breast cancer and the fear of a reoccurrence is real. I don’t think family and friends realise just what it entails …. They think you’ve been cured and you should be overjoyed but in reality we are never the same are we. I always try to look on the positive side of things and am definitely a glass half full kind of girl but until you’ve experienced something like this then I don’t think you can truly understand how it feels. I am so grateful for the amazing care I received from the NHS especially as we were in the thick of covid. My surgeon was so lovely and I had so much faith in him. I am also so grateful for herceptin as I beleive before this wonder drug the prognosis would not have been a good one. Thanks for all you do Liz, you are doing an amazing job! xx

Thank you so much for sharing. I totally understand scan anxiety. I was diagnosed 11/2020 with stage 4 ER PR Positive Denovo with bone Mets. Originally they thought I was early stage. I had no symptoms other than a little dimple on my one breast but I had a MRI February 2020 and I missed my mammogram because of Covid in June. I really don’t think that made a difference to be honest I have lobular, which is very hard to detect and very dense breast. I’ve been getting mammograms with ultrasounds since I was 30 my mom had breast cancer we do not have a gene. It wasn’t till they did my scans that showed lesions in my bones. It doesn’t show in a bone scan, but it will show up in a CT scan… I am doing very well I’m just on Letzorole. I have been a Target therpY and ibrance. I also had a hysterectomy. I am now 53 years old I was 50 at the time… I’m just still very thankful. I got to raise my children and live a very healthy life for 50 years. I will never complain about my diagnosis so many people have it worse than me and I feel pretty darn good considering lol I do have a sense of humor with my diagnosis. And I trust in God and his plan and as of right now I’m very healthy so I can live my life pretty normal. I wish everyone the best that is going through this weather it’s stage one or stage four. It’s still very scary and I just want to thank you again for sharing all the wonderful information that you give us every week.❤

Dr. Liz, anxiety is the absolute worst when you’re waiting for results of a cancer diagnosis. I understand how you feel completely. I just had my mastectomy on Wednesday; ugh! Mine is ER positive, HER negative. Now I wait for the post-op appointment. I am so happy for you that your CAT scan was negative; what a complete gift. Love your vlog and keeping you in my prayers.

Waiting for results is terrible. My imaging was birads 5 so I already figured it was cancer even before I did the biopsy. But between imaging, it was my daughter’s 6th birthday and then a big Xmas party the day after the biopsy. During the party I saw I had a missed call and so after the party, my husband and I got to chat with the dr and found out that I was right and it was cancer. It took me 20 minutes of bargaining with myself to call back to get the results. It’s so hard. It was especially hard trying to do all these tests (it was in a node so I needed tons of extra scans) and keep a happy face on for the kids during the holiday season. This year I’ll be done all the active treatment hopefully before Halloween and can enjoy the holidays.

Mine's devolved to triple negative (after 2 isolated bony mets over the last 3 years) . Routine visit to onco in 3 weeks to decide on next round of PET/CT or bone scan. I can see my scans and reports online within 24hrs. For me, this means I can prepare my mind and make plans before I have to go back for official discussions. I just couldn't wait for a week or be blind-sided in the consultation

So happy for you that the ct scan was good news. I’m allergic to the contrast. First time I ended up with horrendous hives. Last time they gave me Benadryl and Prednisone but I still ended up with an itchy and agitating rash for a week. I don’t want to ever have that contrast again and hope that won’t be a problem. Hoping your surgery goes very well and wishing you a smooth recovery. Hugs

Dear Liz, congratulations to your results! I am so happy that it is still a local recurrence. All the best for the operation. Sounds not very funny :-(. One tip for a nightgown during the change: Perhaps you can find something made of batiste, a very fine, thin, but woven cotton fabric. I have several nightgowns for summer made of it, they are perfect. Love and hugs, Beate

Hi Dr. Liz I have had a right mastectomy for invasive ductal carcinoma. I have had three clean scans but the waiting for results is terrifying ( as you said). Congrats on a clean scans. Just a suggestion Dr. William Li has written a book called Eat to Beat Disease. He specifies which foods kill cancer stem cells, which foods are antiangiogenic, which foods are anti-inflammatory, which foods feed your microbiome. I don't know if the book is available. Thanks also for your posting stating that oncologists should know now to treat the acute symptoms of a medical menopause. My symptoms were brutal. Thank you so much for sharing! I was diagnosed this year with ILC stage 3. Neoadjuvant chemo made the tumor disappear. Next are single mastectomy, radiation and AIs w/Verzenio. I’m 50, postmenopausal. I wonder if your recurrence happened while in tamoxifen or AIs. If so, are your cells becoming resistant to treatment? If you could go back in time, would you have changed anything as far as the original treatment plan you were given goes? Thank you! ❤
