Great sharing from Dr. Mary Healey! I'm glad to see that there is more and more awareness of spiritual gifts among practicing Catholics from laypeople like Dr. Mary Healey to clergy like Father Mathias Thelen. May the Lord increases more of His divine power among his children to advance the Kingdom of God in this world in flame!

Fr. Hugh Barbour-This expression “baptism in the Holy Spirit” is used in the charismatic renewal to refer to an experience of an intensified awareness of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. This presence and power can be manifested in various bodily ways. Even so, the use of the word baptism can lead to a misunderstanding, since this experience is not a sacrament instituted by Christ but rather a new awareness of the life given to Christians in the sacraments of baptism and confirmation. Thus there is no obligation or expectation for any Catholic to have the experience called “baptism in the Holy Spirit.” Some commentators among the spiritual writers of the Eastern Church have gone so far as to say that the common current understanding of “baptism in the Holy Spirit” and its manifestations is incorrect, and that what is needed in the Church is the practice of constant prayer of the heart, which is the real praying in the Spirit, or baptism in the Holy Spirit.

If by 'baptism of the Holy Spirit' you mean spiritual gifts, then indeed it is not an obligation for any Christians who doesn't want them, but it remains highly desirable for all Christians who wants them. And we are exhorted by St. Paul to earnestly desire them in 1Co14.1: "Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy."

When I was confirmed at age 14 I had a miniscule level of faith and had no knowledge of how to appropriate this sacrament into my life. After seeking God for a few years and hungering for his presence, at age 24 my Catholic charismatic community prayed with me for what we called " baptism" of holy Spirit. We were taught it was not the sacrament, and could be called "release" of the Spirit. Semantics aside, I gave my personal consent and received the power and "stirred up the gifts" as St. Paul told Timothy to do. From then up to now, 45 years later..I received understanding of the Scriptures, a personal relationship with our Lord, and zeal to speak of him and love him and our Lady. John the Baptist spoke of Jesus baptizing us in the Spirit, as distinct from he himself baptizing with water. It's amazing what God can do when we cooperate and give our cognizant consent. It's real, it's authentic. It's life-changing.

Many will say to me on that day, Lord Lord did we not come driving out demons and prophesying and performing many miracles in Jesus name, And he will say I never knew you. Be careful of this woman, she talks of this new evangelization, this charismatic renewal. I don't see her talking of the confessional where true healing comes from. They have the ability now, to drive out demons,and you can teach anyone to do this in classes being offered of any faith, take away generational curses, which is false doctrine. Just read Ephesians 19, this is a danger.
