Dr. Oz just released Pegan 365, a combination of "the best aspects of the paleo and vegan diets". It'd be really great if celebrities and celebrity doctors would stop associating veganism with crash dieting.

I personally eat a Pagan diet. It's fully vegan and just involves me performing spells in the kitchen and leaving some of the left-overs for housegnomes.

I just wanted to let you know that you’re the best vegan KZfaqr in my opinion, especially coming from an outsider’s perspective (still a meat eater). I love that you focus more on the ethical side of veganism, it’s a lot more convincing for me than the health aspect. I watch a fair amount of vegan KZfaqrs and no one has been able to motivate me to take a step in the right direction except for you. This new year I’ve decided that I’m going to limit my animal products in some way or another and hope to build from there! I just hope they come out with more comparable and readily available meat alternatives in the near future because that would definitely make it so much easier for me. Thank you for the great content!

Isabel M While looking into veganism I was really put off by a lot of vegan youtubers, I resisted it for so long because I didn’t want to be associated with them. Eventually I decided it doesn’t matter how many crazy vegans there are, I made the choice for myself and I hope I’m an example to those around me that “normal” people can be vegans too!

Ooh, I could have written that! All the big vegan channels are so dishonest and sometimes pressure it's viewers too hard. Unnatural vegan is so down to earth and the only person on youtube keeping me on track to reach my goal of becoming a vegan. I have a wife and two children and a busy life. Transition for me will be slow but I'm moving steadily in the right direction.
@LauraGardnerYoga

supertotoro Some of them act so superior because they went vegan over night. It took me a long time, 3 years of going back and forth then going vegetarian for a year then finally making the commitment and I’ve been vegan just over a year now. There’s nothing wrong with either way, as long as you are making changes to reduce suffering then I think that’s a great thing, but a lot of vegans have an all or nothing approach that I don’t think is helpful.

Plant Powered Yogi yes exactly. Nice to hear someone else in similar situation. It will probably take years for me too. If I lived alone it could be easier, but changing my diet and my family's diet will for sure take years. When I was a bachelor I was too lazy to care I think, even though I understood some of the cruelty that was involved in animal products. Now health issues got me on the track and I also learnt more about the ethical side and im sure I will at least eat as a vegan in the future. If I will also be able to adopt a vegan life style im not sure yet, but hopefully so.

Long term most men + women would end up severely underweight if they followed it strictly. You would have to be 100cm (or 3'3) to maintain a healthy weight on 700 calories a day with a sedentary lifestyle. Definitely the most balanced, informative vegan diet source on KZfaq. I was a freelee victim, believing I should be eating 30 bananas a day, until I got some sense and started to eat a proper diet. I went from years of not eating much, existing off smoking and coffee and high stress each day to the freelee type diet. But what I needed to do was fill my body was good quality proteins and nutrients. When I started eating cooked and higher protein vegan my hair grew back and I gained muscle, I also learned to eliminate stress through meditation that helped a lot. It was like my body needed that food to build up a store because of the years of not eating much.

Personally, I don't see 5 cups of vegetables as a lot... I have a cup of courgette in my oats in the morning. I guess about 3 cups (lettuce, carrots and maybe some broccoli (cooked, of course)) for lunch and another cup as a snack or for dinner. So more often than not I eat more than 5 cups a day.

Yeah, that was weird her saying 5 cups of veggies is hard to eat in a day. A large salad & a bowl of vegetable soup would easily exceed 5 cups. I think she just eats so many processed foods (no hate), that she doesn't get that eating lots of veg is not strange or difficult. Particularly when you cook it.

@@thatwasweird954 it might be a difference between raw and cooked, how tightly they're fit into the cup, or heaping the top of the cup. I'm not vegan (You popped up on my YT recommendations for SOME reason and I just like to watch a bit here and there for your more logical, researched approach to what can easily become a very fervent and emotional topic), but I started to try a modified version of this diet and wanted to weigh in. Modified because A- I work in the service industry and therefore need to consume wine during my shift, tasting a sip from every bottle I open to insure quality and B- I'm a fromagere, so cheese is actually my literal life and therefore I have to consume SOME dairy even in small amounts. What attracted me, as a non-vegan, to this diet was the idea of variety and options that meant being more conscious of my animal products (which is a process I've been going through anyway and is partially inspired by my job- all our cheeses are farms who take good care of their livestock and it's those types of places I want to support/encourage). In reality- it can be REALLY hard to sustain off the top, especially if you're not used to eating this way. I didn't follow the recipes they listed, just created a bunch of my own based off the guidelines and to be honest I was exhausted, cranky, and HUNGRY ALL THE TIME. I felt like I was constantly eating 'serving sizes', had somehow run through my allotments of certain groups and yet was never full. I'm actually pretty healthy/in shape and purely wanted a more plant-filled eating plan, but to be honest unless you're pretty sedentary you'll need more than this quickly.

I wish I could agree that “milk is dead” but I work at Starbucks and we definitely use cow milk more than 50% of the time, although plant milks are popular, as is black coffee. Many people ask for lactose-free or non-fat milk. And I think yogurt experienced a resurgence as both a “fun” kids food in convenient packaging, and a source of probiotics, within the last ten years (especially with the rise of organic and grass fed dairy products?). I often see yogurt advertised to females in particular? Maybe because calcium? Regarding the “Paleo” diet; aside from allowing grass-fed butter under the “dairy radar”, the diet also seems to have little-to-no restrictions for eggs either? I’ve seen paleo recipes for baked goods that required SIX EGGS. For banana bread. When bananas and flax are technically both paleo(?) and are a good egg substitute (even with gluten-free or grain-free baking). Years ago I was on the fence about ethics and healthy eating so I did lots of research into both diets. That’s what I remember...

I work at Starbucks too. When people ask for lactose or nonfat, I bring up the fact that we have almond coconut and soy options. I’d say 60% of those people opt for the non-dairy, try it! Also, a lot of people who go to Starbucks consider it an expensive, infrequent option. So they may consume almond milk at home, they want “the full experience” of their drink, or they may not even consider asking for a nondairy option.

Great video! I just wanted to say about the nut milk having sugar, almost all varieties of nut milk come in unsweetened varieties that are still fortified. I buy an unsweetened vanilla almond milk and sweeten with stevia if I need to and it only has 30 calories a cup. :) Obviously the protein is still quite low though. I wonder if the diet specified the type of almond milk? If they are encouraging regular sugary almond milk that really wouldn't make sense.

If we compare the "every day eat" list with the actual sample day, we'll find that the sample day simply does not meet the requirements of the list (unless I'm misreading or misunderstanding something). There's only 1/2 cup of beans in the lunch salad and "3 oz of protein" (I'm assuming meat) in the dinner portion--nowhere near the 2 cups of legumes/vegan protein the chart says to eat. I also only see 1 slice of bread, maybe some corn (?) in the salad, and 1 fruit (WTF is with that serving size?), so there should still be 1 serving of carbs left. The nondairy item appears to be entirely missing. Basically, it meets its own criteria on fats, and maybe vegetables, but everything else doesn't measure up. Actually following the the "Every day eat" list, I just picked random veggies, etc. and this is what I got: *Veggies* 2 cups broccoli cooked from frozen 10 oz frozen spinach (a little less than 2 cups) 1 cup fresh kale *Carbs* 1/2 cup dry oatmeal (about 1 cup cooked) 1 medium apple (I'm calling this one serving...?) 1/2 cup mashed sweet potato *Protein* 1 cup chickpeas 1 cup sliced tempeh 3 oz chicken breast w/o skin *Fats* 1 oz walnuts 1 oz almonds *Nondairy* 1 cup plain sweetened almond milk *Misc. things not on the list which he's probably expecting and/or wanting people to consume* 8 cups tap water 1/2 teaspoon salt It's a little bit below the RDI for b5 and potassium, and of course it's seriously lacking in b12 and D, but everything else seems to be covered. If I fiddled with the exact choices of foods or added more veggies, I could probably get it to cover the slight lack in b5 and potassium, but that's not really the point of this. This adds up to just under 1700 calories when I punch it into Cronometer. This level of calorie intake wouldn't be suitable for weight maintenance, but I'm assuming that Dr. Oz is promoting this as a weight-loss thing since it's the New Year. I think that with the bulk, protein, fat, and starch, it could be a pretty satisfying way to eat for awhile (based on my list, not his sample day). Add in your two desserts and drinks per week and your one cheat day, and some people might have trouble losing weight at all. But that sample day on the chart...that's just ridiculous. :'D It also reminds me of the Eat To Live diet plan from Dr. Fuhrman, but I'd rather not make this comment longer by going into all of the similarities and differences. Personally I think ETL is better, and that's all I want to say about that. :)

Milk alternative (meaning fortified soya milk) is not only necessary for important calcium intake for those who don't get many other sources, but also other nutrients such as vitamin D (of which we are all deficient in Canada) and vitamin B12 (again, in Canada)... also in soya breverages, the protein intake is about equivalent to that of milk. You'll get the added nutrients in other fortified plant breverages, but not the protein amount.

I agree with you about cheat days. I'm severely lactose intolerant and have a sweet tooth for chocolate and whenever it's in my face, it becomes very very hard to control the urge to eat it. I know I will be sick if I do, but knowing the taste makes it super hard. It's better when there isn't any in the house. So cheat days, if you have any, are better to have outside of your house at some restaurants or friend's house, etc. Edit: My home desert, when I decide to have one, is the Silk chocolate milk 😍

What is your opinion on vegans who use tanning beds for vitamin d during the winter? Could you do a video on vitamin d?
@ala4935
@ala4935 6 жыл бұрын
D J no one should use tanning beds. they should be illegal, like they are in other countries. i'm a stage four melanoma patient. i never used a tanning bed but trust me, don't do anything to increase your chances of melanoma. it is hell. vitashine is a formula of vegan vitamin d3 which is easily absorbed and quite inexpensive. there's no reason to damage your cells to get a vitamin.
@darion496
@darion496 6 жыл бұрын
Well my main reason for asking was because a lot of vegans have claimed it has helped them feel better during the winter. They do not overexpose in the beds and claimed that the antioxidants in the foods we eat actually protect our skin. Most people are vitamin d deficient because they are so afraid of the sun and uv light in general. I take vitamin d as well but it doesn't help with SAD during the winter for me anyway.. However, I did just start taking it and maybe the dosage isn't high enough. I also just think its odd that people are so scared of sunlight in general when without it there would be no life lol. It is the main source of vitamin d, and tanning beds put off the same types of rays as the sun. I'm really on the fence.
@niratlc
@niratlc 6 жыл бұрын
D J I'm a skin care specialist and I implore you to not use tanning beds ever. It is patently the worst thing you could do for your skin. It's likely true that vegans consume more antioxidants than nonvegans, but I promise you that is not enough to protect you. It only takes 60 seconds of UV exposure to start accumulating damage. Make sure you're properly supplementing Vitamin D and invest in a SAD lamp. Your skin will thank you!

so i put into cronometer based on the rules and not the example and its your typical 1200 calorie diet and i didnt even add the last animal meat. my meals i entered was as follows Breakfast - oatmeal (0.5 cup cooked), 1 medium banana, 0.5 cup strawberries (using 3/4 carbs) Lunch - 1 cup of pan fried tofu, 1 cup of cooked brussel sprouts, 0.5 cup of cooked brown rice (1 protien, 1 veggie, and last carb) Dinner - cauliflower rice, 1 cup of pan fried tofu, 1 cup of spinach, 1 roma tomato, onion, garlic, teaspoon of any fatty dressing diluted with water mixed with some nutritional yeast for b12 Snack - celery with 2 tablespoons of raw almomd butter With really thought out planning this is not too bad. Only problem is Vitamin D. I live in a cold place so the sun isnt my option so I have to supplement that. I personally would add more fruit in case you grow hungry. This is pretty high in protein if tofu is used. only thing i can see backfiring is my belly after all the fiber i stuffed down my throat if i used beans. Dr. Oz shouldve had something like this to make it more attractive and filling.
