Low Carb Down Under

Күн бұрын

Dr. Sarah Huen is a nephrologist, physician scientist, and an assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Originally from Chicago, IL. Dr. Huen received her initial medical training at Northwestern University. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at New York University Medical Center.
Intrigued by the pathophysiology of acute kidney injury and frustrated by the lack of any viable therapeutic options, she pursued a research nephrology fellowship and a Ph.D. degree in Investigative Medicine at Yale University in the laboratory of Dr. Lloyd Cantley studying the role of macrophages in ischemic kidney injury. She was a post doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Ruslan Medzhitov at Yale where she studied the mechanisms of tissue tolerance and changes in metabolism in systemic inflammation.
Dr. Huen has been investigating how the evolutionarily conserved response of anorexia to acute infection could be protective in bacterial sepsis, a severe inflammatory response to an infection. After experiencing how a low carbohydrate diet could achieve normal blood glucose (no more blood glucose rollercoasters) in her T1D husband, she is now investigating dietary influences on kidney metabolism using principles from evolutionary biology and biochemistry. She recently rescued 2 cats from a shelter and dry high carb kibble, and they are now enjoying a species appropriate diet, 100% raw carnivore. Outside of medicine and science, she enjoys cooking, photography and hiking.

I developed kidney stones about 10 years ago. No doctor mentioned any relation between insulin resistance and kidney stones, they would not hazard a guess on the cause. Five years ago, I developed a bad and persistent case of cutaneous candidiasis, in the groin and both armpits. Trying to find a treatment that would work, I discovered it is a prediabetic symptom, along with the skin tags and elbow patches I also had. Alarmed, I searched and found information of LCHF eating. I've been keto ever since, lost about 50 lbs of fat that had collected, all the skin problems disappeared, insulin sensitivity and blood work normalized, and I've had no kidney problems since.

Thank you for this presentation. My father died of end stage renal disease nearly 10 years ago, and this kidney disease was brought about about by being a type 2 diabetic. If we only had the information that we have today, with reference to the efficacy of low carb diets to reduce the very cause of his renal disease, he might still be here with us today. Moreover, his quality of life would have been so much better by not having to have endured regular exhausting dialysis, then getting a transplant which held up for about 8 years, and then falling back into regular dialysis again before his untimely death. Glycemic control, which no other diet besides a low carb diet can so quickly correct, is imperative for all people, especially those with renal dysfunction

There have been numerous articles written that now debunk the notion that eating lots of protein causes kidney disease. The only people that still perpetuate this myth are those who have not updated their knowledge, or dishonest vegan activists who have a vested interest in demonizing protein because animal foods are richest in protein, and have it in its most bioavailable and complete form. As Dr. Huen showed here (12:00 - 12:20), if hunter gather tribes can eat large amounts of protein and professional athlete can eat many times the RDA for protein , and not develop renal dysfunction, then the notion that protein has a deleterious affect on the kidneys is flat out wrong. The myth about protein adversely affecting kidney health comes from studies where an elevated protein intake showed problematic outcomes for those with PRE-EXISTING kidney disease. To extrapolate from that phenomenon to assert that increased protein consumption will lead to kidney disease in a person with normal renal function is about as erroneous as claiming that because walking on a fractured leg exacerbates the injury, therefore walking for healthy people is bad.

Thanks for this lecture!!! I have a child with CKD due to congenital malformation and piecing the right answer even from his nephrologist and dietitian has been excruciatingly difficult! I think this drives the point home very well that avoiding diabetes at all costs is key, and that protein isn’t the problem but that reduced kidney reserve is, I wish everyone dealing with non diabetic kidney disease could see this explanation and understand it, because the thing is that we are all being counselled to go on very low protein plant based diets, people see the creatinine etc go way down but they are probably going sarcopenic and becoming very frail…

The side story you shared about your cats should be a separate video for all the cat lovers out there. (time mark 2:54 to 4:44). If this is true of cats, can the same assumption be made for dogs? My wife insist mixing rice with my dogs food, saying that their stools are too soft, more starch will fix it, but I know dogs and cats are pretty much 100% carnivores, so I fail to see the logic in feeding them more carbs, if anything, they should be eating 100% protein in my option.

Essentially cats and dogs are similar. Saying that dogs can handle more carbohydrates then cats, but it does not mean they should. A raw food diet is best. Neither animal should have grains in there diet. Removing carbs will most likely fix their stool problem if you are not feeding processed dog food. Find a raw food manufacturer near you. They are popping up all around now days.

It is essentially just flavored sugar water, just like soda. Fruit juice with pulp is a bit better, but you are a million times better off just eating the fruit. Lots of fiber (in the pulp), blood sugar increase is much less pronounced. Oh, also, white bread, especially the one with sugar inside. That one's also a killer. But potatoes? Fruits? Grains? @@dvdv7777 The problem is people always underestimate how much is enough. So best to avoid carbohydrates altogether, and that includes fruit. Our ancestors ate fruits and plants, but seasonally. We are talking 2 - 3 months of the year, during the summer. So for much of the year, they did not suffer with being slightly diabetic or insulin resistant, and all that self-corrected by the time summer returned. There were no grains during the hunter-gatherer era, because agriculture has only been around for about 10,000 years. The 24/7/365 access to carbohydrates was never intended for the way the human body is currently designed. It's no wonder that we are getting sicker, fatter and dying younger, despite 50+ years of "eat less, move more, avoid saturated fat, eat more whole grains".

Excess carbohydrates lead to obesity. The only roles for carbs in the body is energy, what we eat is stored. First in glycogen stores, then as triglycerides in fat cells. Fats and proteins have other roles in the body. While some is used for energy, the components of fat and protein are channeled to generating enzymes, vitamins and hormones, and to rebuilding cells instead of storing energy. The standard model, calories in/ calories out and a calorie is a calorie- is wrong.
@andoletube
@andoletube 4 жыл бұрын
Ketogenic diets result in much lower insulin levels. High insulin levels lead to increased food cravings, and puts your body into fat storage mode which makes it very hard to metabolise fat stores. People on high fat diets have highly moderated appetite. I know this because previously when I was on a carb-based diet, I would struggle enormously with feeling hungry for much of the day. I couldn't control my eating and portions because my body was assaulting me with hunger messages due to the rebound from the last carb-based meal and insulin blast I had. Now that I'm on Keto, I don't overeat, I don't even get very hungry. I eat very moderately and sustainably. What used to be called a behavioural/psychological case of addictive eating turned out to be nothing more than a poor response to carbohydrates. Very few people on Keto consume more calories than they require - it's self regulating. But you must not combine high fat with high carb or you're in for a world of pain!

It's very hard to become/stay obese if most of your calories are coming from fat and if your carbohydrate intake is low. This is due to the satiation factor in the hormones promoted by a high fat, low carb diet. See Gary Taubes, 'Good Calories, bad calories'

I strongly believe organic vegan diet is the best as kidneys don't get deteriorated by organic & plants produces much at all vs meat's phosphorus scars & destroy the kidneys !!! And plant based diets ALKALIZE our bodies ,not acidify = sick ,or dead ,like meats as meats are VERY ACIDIC !!!Though ,only one concern comes w/ vegan diets when it comes to kidney diseases is the blood circulations !
