@Milan Mohapatra I think Sachin Pilot is a better option. He is young, well educated and experienced leader. Being associated with Hindi heartland it gives him upperhand over Tharoor to connect to larger part of India. Tharoor is seen in high regards by educated people but people from small town and villages can associate themselves with him. Sashi Tharoor as a HRD minister or foreign affairs minister can help India in better way.

@Soumyaditya Basu Yes he is "accused". The person who filed the case is Subramanian Swamy, a BJP leader. Of proven guilty he could be jailed for 10 years, but still police is not able to find any substantial evidence against him even when from last 6 years BJP is in power. Learn others details about the case as well like autopsy, physiological autopsy and thier children statements on their relationship. Don't end sentence with the word "accused".

"India in the 1960s was pathetically dependent on US food aid. Even in the bumper monsoon year of 1964-65, food aid totalled 7 million tonnes, over one-tenth of domestic production. Then India was hit by twin droughts in 1965 and 1966. Grain production crashed by one-fifth. Only unprecedented food aid saved India from mass starvation". swaminomics.org/drought-not-a-big-calamity-in-india-anymore

We will look forward to the future. If no tourists would have invaded us we wouldn't even have faced famines in the past century.
@andrewwilliams9312
@andrewwilliams9312 3 жыл бұрын
You can find historians and economists who argue the causes of Indian famine being from either purely natural to "holocaust". "Tirthankar Roy suggests that the famines were due to environmental factors and inherent in India's ecology. . . Roy argues that massive investments in agriculture were required to break India's stagnation, however these were not forthcoming owing to scarcity of water, poor quality of soil and livestock and a poorly developed input market which guaranteed that investments in agriculture were extremely risky. . . Roy is of the opinion that improvements in the market efficiency did contribute to the alleviation of weather-induced famines after 1900, an exception to which is the Bengal famine of 1943". "Michelle Burge McAlpin has argued that economic changes in India during the 19th century contributed towards the end of famine. The overwhelmingly subsistence agriculture economy of 19th century India gave way to a more diversified economy in the 20th century, which, by offering other forms of employment, created less agricultural disruption (and, consequently, less mortality) during times of scarcity.[38] The construction of Indian railways between 1860 and 1920, and the opportunities thereby offered for greater profit in other markets, allowed farmers to accumulate assets that could then be drawn upon during times of scarcity. By the early 20th century, many farmers in the Bombay presidency were growing a portion of their crop for export. The railways also brought in food, whenever expected scarcities began to drive up food prices.[39] Similarly, Donald Attwood writes that by the end of the 19th century 'local food scarcities in any given district and season were increasingly smoothed out by the invisible hand of the market[40] and that 'By 1920, large-scale institutions integrated this region into an industrial and globalising world-ending famines and causing a rapid decline in mortality rates, hence a rise in human welfare'" Mike Davis iis a Marxist and so has a blinkered view of the world as being one of the oppressors versus the oppressed. He's an "American writer, political activist, urban theorist, and historian" [Wikipedia]. "Mike Davis regards the famines of the 1870s and 1890s as 'Late Victorian Holocausts'. This negative image of British rule is common in India.[37]Davis argues that "Millions died, not outside the 'modern world system', but in the very process of being forcibly incorporated into its economic and political structures. They died in the golden age of Liberal Capitalism; indeed, many were murdered ... by the theological application of the sacred principles of Smith, Bentham and Mill." "I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation." Britain should absolutely acknowledge and apologise for historic colonising. Admittedly Britain is no longer wealthy enough to deliver anything other than a token financial gesture but it's a matter of principal. A full and formal apology is the very least we should do.

I love his speech! He is well informed and spoke clearly, without disrespecting anyone. I wish he added more information about slave/labors that were brought from India to the Caribbean/West Indies. We Caribbeans and South Americans Desis are often forgotten. I wish more desis would be familiar with that part of history. Many of us in the Caribbean and South American have lost our families because of it. My entire family died back in India. My Great Grandpa died on the ship and his body was tossed in the Ocean. Sadly his name was never recorded properly and we cannot trace our lineage to find our long-lost families back in India/Pakistan. This is the reality for many people in the West Indies. I so wish the squabbling between religious communities and countries would stop, we are the same people. What has been done is done, its over, lets heal and move on and forgive each other. Lets teach the next generation to love and respect each other's difference, not compete over 'who is right, who is wrong!

I absolutely love you guys! Being the father of a child who is being brought up in the UK now,, I am always concerned that she will forget her roots.....and so I made her watch this video as I wanted her to know the part of the history that she is not been taught! You guys might want to read two of Dr. Tharoor's books.....the "Inglorious Empire", that he wrote as a direct result of this speech and "Why am I a Hindu"......an absolute eye opener. Please keep doing what you do. You make me feel happy after a hard day :)

U know what, last year it was the 100th anniversary of Jalianwala Bagh massacre. After all these yrs when we demanded an apology for it, this time the British parliament n British PM, Theresa May said that they regret it but WON'T SAY SORRY. Imagine if ur loved one is killed, u pardoned him, n he says the very same line. It's not about owing responsibility, it is what u shd know, for ur sake, so that ur genext wud learn from it n be more human.

When we talk about how it has effected India can be seen by studying the problems in Kashmir valley, India may have moved much forward but still now every week we get news of our soldiers undergoing death, and that's all because of the partition done by the British, so yes it still effects us guys.

We Indians will be happy with a sorry and a hug..... Bottom line is..... India was civilized and economically strong earlier, it can do it again....... India is growing and will grow and top the chart...... There's no stopping...... If compared, the growth is slow but, India will be the country where everyone would love to live in....... Love u guys...... "AGAIN"...
