That dreamy, transcendent sound, somewhere between melancholy and triumphant - is why I love Drab Majesty. Their music is retro but not cheesy. Familiar in the way of nostalgia but still unique. This is some of the best 80s-revival music I've ever heard.

Sorry, but this has nothing to do with "Goth". Goth man still found refuge in a "God". The theme of the song deals with an adverse posture in relation to the divinity: the disappointment with all the divine precepts. "We couldn't love but you paired us together to walk hand in hand the irony We couldn't make this world ours..."
@Zelphraeya
@Zelphraeya 2 жыл бұрын
@@Xapiro To me, it has the same undertones of living a lonely life of pain with the human condition, their acknowledgement of God, and their acknowledgement of their own worth as a human being/ soul; similar to songs like, "Hello, My Name Is Human" by Highly Suspect (theirs and Drab Majesty come across as wanting respect), and, "Once In A Lifetime" by Wolfsheim (he wants respect in the form of dignity, as he is about to take his own life). "You" = God in "Not Just A Name" and "Once In A Lifetime". Other than that, I'd say contemplating human existence and your relationship with life, death, the afterlife, and the divine are essentially Goth themed in my eyes; as a person who has interests in the Gothic Subculture. Side note if you want to check them out: Two songs that seem to be along the theme of spiritual traps & their perception of reality are, "Tricks" by OhGr, and, "Gimmicks" by File Not Found.
@Xapiro
@Xapiro 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zelphraeya Perhaps, first, we would have to define what we mean by "gothic", in order to reach a consensus. Before the Gothic subculture in Modernity, Meroveu, leader of the Franks, already used the word to differentiate himself from the Romans. "Gothic" comes from "Goth", a generic name for the barbarian tribes north of the Roman Empire.

Idk why but this song makes me so very sad, the melody and the music, the lyrics. I cannot help but cry whenever I hear it. I know it’s about heavens gate members but i also interpret it as people in this world that are lost, alone, scared to love, scared to be loved, feeling unworthy and just wanting anyone to connect with. To just feel alive instead of feeling alone and adrift in a world that doesn’t care. This song is very dear to me.

One of my favorite bands and I just find the DIY theatrics so endearing. Some people I've showed them too scoff at their aesthetic and can't get past it, but it adds so much during their performances. It turns them into these strange, otherworldly characters that playing live in jeans and a t-shirt will never accomplish.

I just came back to add, can we please take a moment to appreciate the videographer while I'm at it? Like, the absolutely gorgeous shots this person captured. Did you see that moment with the trees through the doors, with the lighting? That moment encapsulated this song's meaning. Stunning, hat's off.

Story: One beautiful pre-covid summer afternoon I walked thru a packed predominantly Asian mall with Not Just A Name cranked up on a very loud BTS. The enhanced acoustics provided from the multi-story vaulted glass canopy running the corridor length of the mall was audiogasmic. People stopped, many looked in my direction for a moment, though with not a single vibe of scorn. Within a minute, 2 security dudes approach me, I thought for sure I'll be tossed out. Was not to be, not that day, not in that moment, the Security dudes walked slowly past me hesitantly nodding approval like 'okay you can have this one'. Ha! a rare moment to savor indeed. I know it sounds melodramatic but this Drab Majesty song as we all know and love with its soaring peaceful melody it echoed deep into that gigantic mall delightfully captivating those lucky enough to hear. I wish I took a vid cause It was majestic! The long shafts of sun light beams blazing brilliantly down from the glass canopy onto the malls bright sparkling 3 story water fountain! People were like hypnotized moving in slow motion, illuminated by good vibes from a passing stranger sharing some DM's beautiful music.....For a brief moment in time lit them all up with!
