@@Nellis202 Agreed 1000%. Van Helsing was a mixture of science and faith in one man. That lack was one of the reasons I hated and despised "Bram Stoker's Dracula" when it came out. It was the first attempt to make Dracula a romantic, tragic figure and they murdered the character of Van Helsing to boot. To paraphrase my sister, speaking of the Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr, "It's a great Dracula movie - unless you know anything at all about the actual Dracula stories." (Speaking of the Holmes movie, she said "It's a great Sherlock Holmes movie, unless you know anything at all about the actual Sherlock Holmes stories.")

Edward Van Sloan (Van Helsing) does a masterful job of portraying a man who ALMOST succumbs to Dracula's considerable powers--we get the impression of Van Helsing battling through a fierce storm that nearly sweeps him away, but his own will is so strong that he resists, much to Dracula's dismay and surprise. By resisting Dracula--perhaps the first and only mortal man to ever do so--Van Helsing wins his enemy's respect.

It's remarkable how powerful the scene is without a soundtrack. A part of me is always tuned in to atmospheric music in modern movies, but here, the scene is made stronger by framing it in silence and letting it thus develop. Mesmerising performance from both these gentlemen!
@SaleemFrazer
@SaleemFrazer 6 ай бұрын
That's because, without the music, the actions and characters onscreen are more pronounced. The visual details are more focused on by the audience because there's nothing to "help them" feel a certain way. It's all about the moment much like the real world. Soundtracks can enhance a scene, but the removal of one can also have the same effect if directed well.
@luckyzert

Lugosi's incredibly powerful work with his outstretched hand clutching Van Helsing through the distance between them, and then slowly closing his fist and bringing him in has never been performed better. Nowhere, no one. And to your point...silence. Screenwriters today would have filled that void with unnecessary dialogue. This scene is so incredibly powerful. So sorry that Lugosi never got the kudos due while he was still alive...always in the shadow of Karloff (certainly no demeaning Karloff here in any way).

it's even funnier in the spanish version. Van Helsing pretends to be controlled by Dracula and comes toward him. Then Dracula tells him to put the crucifix in the box. Dracula covers his eyes with his cape and asks something like "Did you do what i asked?" van helsing replies "yes" Dracula lowers his cape and then van helsing flashes the crucifix at him and then the count runs off yelling and screaming.
