This video was done on my Twitch stream on April 15th, 2020 and is centered around TSM's series vs FLY in LCS Playoffs Spring 2020. Despite the series going 5 games, I thought TSM set themselves up for failure and lost every draft. This video aside, it feels like there is extremely little content centered around drafting and theory that goes into it. Enjoy the video, this is possibly the first of many of it's kind, all of course going over different drafts from different regions.

Hi, to anyone who wonders what the hell he refers to with these colors he's making MTG allegories. I'm not exactly an expert but I think it's something like this: Red: very agressive, good in early but comes out of gas relatively fast. Lee sin, for example. Blue: more of a control style, it benefits from waiting and having the control. I think Azir is a good example. Green: it depends on its synergy with others in order to be good. In this case Ivern and Yuumi are somewhat green. White: very flexible, able to change its purpose easily. A really good example in this recent times is Varus, he's flex pickable (you can play it mid- bot) an he's also versatile in its build since you can be AP, on hit or lethality poke. Black: power that requieres some kind of sacrifice. Karthus jungle for example, he can be really powerful within a certain team comp but his lanes need to play around him in order to make him function. Well, I think that's an overall idea. I hope this helps someone : )

4thot I mean, I know its kinda weird at the start but actually it has a lot of sense. Just imagine team comps are decks from a TCG, if your deck is monored or aggro (like early game champions that need to win in less than 30 min) you can just win by not loosing, if you're the "control deck" you win at the moment you stabilize and outscale the early game champs.

The best place to start is understanding that what you play is a choice! The next is understanding that every character choice offers questions to ask your opponent but it does not mean those questions are unique; they may not be any different from another champion choice. And meaningful; they may not influence the game because of context. What this summates to is drafting where you have to balance asking your opponent questions to win the game with giving your team the agency to answer your opponents questions. In the first game LS major point of criticism was of the aatrox first pick and both team's poor response/follow up to it. Aatrox is a bursty drain tank, he likes tools that help him stick on targets a good example of a perfect champion to supplement this is Sejuani. In addition Aatrox is vulnerable early because of long cooldowns and he falls off after 2 items because his damage and drain is beaten out by carries at 3 items. So in addition to the passive she gives Aatrox to stick on targets she also hits the map hard on 3 cheap items to more than make up for his weakness. But TSM doesn't choose to supplement this choice in anyway and FLY doesn't offer that efficient of an answer like poppy who aatrox quite literally can't ever kill and who doesn't need much gold get her items.

I mean most coaches at some point just give the fuck up and pick whatever their players want to pick or what he thinks they must go to or else they will get flamed. Everyone thinks that Aaaaaatrox is a carry and if they pick tanks like Poppy on him everyone will flame if they lose the game. Same thing that happened with Dardoch, as if Elise and Lee Sin are good if you are not C9 or Svenskeren.... My problem is that TSM seem unpractised to everything, seriously. Kobbe can play 3-4 champs, Broken Blade is default Aatrox the whole split, Dardoch is really shit and was just lucky the 4th game, Biofrost was put on Nautilus duty in nearly every game i think? And then you have Bjergsen that picks Ekko mid because he thinks that melee champs have synergy with Seju, in game 5..... I agree with what Loco said, Bjergsen and Dardoch look as if they built 0 synergy in the entire split and if you have all these months to do sth like that and learn new shit but instead decide to troll Maokai mid instead of Kobbe expanding his pool or them trying to bring mages on bot lane, well yeah... Don't blame anyone else but you. Also Bjergsen is your boss (i say this for the rest of the players and coaches) and that is not good.

@Pieter Buelens as someone who coaches at a semi pro level taking all these things into consideration on a very small timer is INCREDIBLY difficult. you are talking about being able to see synergies between over 100 different champions knowing which ones your team is comfortable on and making sure each of those picks are good into the enemy team and also aren't just dog champions. LS makes very insightful videos but he also has the advantage of no pressure (he makes a mistake it has no impact) hindsight (he sees the outcome already and can play through) and unlimited time (doing this thought process in 40 seconds is incredibly hard) he also doesnt have to see the played out some of his decisions are great on paper but the way it would actually play out can sometimes be very different. TSM drafts do have win conditions but flyquest managed to pick appart how tsm want to play their draft its also massively down to execution bc if tsm play to their win conditions better than flyquest play to theirs they can win that game. There is a reason ls keeps using the term "in a vacuum". Just as a disclaimer none of this is a slight on LS its a great video very insightful and people can learn a huge amount from it, I certainly did, but there is so much more that needs to be considered around it.

Especially now, but throughout the years it feels to me like LS is literally the only person that actually understands League. I would really really like LS to bring a coach on his stream and maybe discuss something like this, I think that would be amazing. It seems like coaches find something that works and stick to their comfort zone and this is universal to all regions. No one makes an extra effort to understand the game better outside of the comfort zone that they are in and they keep trying to improve on it, instead of looking outside of it. Players are less to blame but this applies to them as well. I'm not saying everyone's trash I'm just saying maybe one day a well put-together team with a coach that actually understands the game will come along and raise the bar very high as far as the importance of the coaching role in a team. Coaches seem to get little respect anyways from players.

Is there anyway you could do a guide for how to draft? I learned a lot from your videos already, but i think im missing something. I would love to see an explanation on the importance of having mixed damage vs counterpicks vs team synergy and matching the theme of your team, or picking certain early game champs that can keep scaling teams in the game vs going for maximum scaling. Obviously it would be ideal to get all that at once but in most cases sacrifices have to be made and i would love to see how you prioritize certain aspects of drafting over others. you already have some videos about this, but a general drafting guide would be super useful, especially with clash being a part of the game. Using a card game as a metaphor fits so well. I enjoy such an analysis. It also shows how terrifying the drafts are, if the first team starts to get how to max win chances simply by better drafts. The only limiting thing i can think of is the playable champ pool, but a theoretical analysis doesnt have to account for that.

so i have to leave a comment because i watched the whole 2 hours and i was captivated the whole time, it goes without saying that drafts matters on both sides of the coin but i had no idea how omnipresent this concept is, almost as if games are always decided on champ selec unless the winning draft int their asses off, thanks for the great work!

This video was suggested to me by YT. Reading your thoughts on it and without knowledge of your other content, I would say that this is the type of content I'm dying for in league. Stuff for brains, not guts. If you keep doing these chess-like big brain videos you can be sure you've got a regular.

I really like this content, if I could give one item of feedback it might be beneficial for you to turn off / ignore chat during dedicated segments of deep analysis. I find that while I'm watching this on YT I'm skipping ahead until you're done arguing with chat over their nonsense pick ideas. I think long-form content has a lot of potential for you especially if you made it more of a focused lecture rather than deviating every time a viewer types a random champion's name. Awesome content tho.

I dont know LS ranting and talking trash to idiotic twitch chatters is part of his character and I find it super funny when he does it, I think he knows that people are trolls, but it's part of interaction and humor

LS aka Literal Savant is a content creator, coach and English LCK color-caster. He is very vocal about how drafts affect games in proplay and how Liandry's Torment is better than Morellonomicon in many situations. He is also quite the 5Head to bring up MTG definitions during LoL analysis as well.

If theres one thing to take away from this video for literally anyone whether its gold players or pro players its the mentality of imagining how a champ performs from more than just your own side. Most importantly. How does your team like your champ and how does your enemy like your champ. Not just how I like my champ in my lane in isolation.
